Deanna Durbin died on this day 11 years ago, aged 91. - Durbin's first name was actually Edna. When she was 10, her parents would enroll her in a singing academy, and she would soon be singing at clubs and churches. - In 1935, Durbin would be called to audition for the role of a young Ernestine Schumann-Heink. Her performance of the opera "Il Bacio" was so impressive that MGM would sign her to a contract. The following year, she made her film debut opposite Judy Garland in Every Sunday. - Also in 1936, Durbin would audition to be the singing voice of Snow White in Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but Walt Disney rejected her for sounding 'too old'- she was 15 at the time. - Durbin would have a string of leading roles in the late '30s, such as Three Smart Girls, Mad About Music, That Certain Age, and First Love. In the 1940s, she would move from musical films to try establishing herself as a serious actress, particularly in comedy movies, but also in dramatic movies that included Christmas Holiday and Lady on a Train. By 1946, she was the second-highest paid US actress, behind Bette Davis. - After her contract with Universal expired in 1948, and then moved to France where she married the director of the aforementioned Lady on a Train, Charles Henri David. The two would be married until Charles' death in 1999. - Durbin was known for her reclusiveness, often denying 'where are they now' interviewers from interviewing her. She would grant a rare interview in 1983, referring to her stage name in the third person due to it being manufactured by Hollywood- at the time, she had gone back to calling herself by her birth name. She would remain in a private life for the rest of her life, with her death being announced about two weeks after it had actually happened.

Donald Lee Stewart died on January 24, 2024, aged 84, according to an unsourced edit to his Wiki page. I can't find anything on Google or Facebook. He was usually known as "Apostle Stewart". I can find an old page on Facebook that hasn't been updated since the early 2010s. All of his websites are long down.

This makes the legendary Sandy Koufax the last Brooklyn Dodger of the 1955 World Series winning team. I believe there are other Dodgers from earlier years but I’ll have to confirm. Remaining Dodgers: Jim Gentile (57) Fred Kipp (57) Sandy Koufax (55-57) Robert Aspromonte (56) Thomas Brown (44-45, 47-51)

From the FT describing Truss: "Unfortunately, her approach worked a bit like this: imagine a bunch of people are stuck in a warm, stuffy room together. Everyone wants the windows to be opened, but they are fastened shut by complicated locks. While people try to work out how the locks operate, one of them, Liz, attempts to throw a chair through the window. The chair bounces off and hits her in the face."

Yvon Gattaz was killed off on both French and English Wikis today by an anonymous French IP, claiming that he died today. Could be bs, could be something.

Of all the places on the internet you could target, why the fuck a pokey little forum largely about the dead and dying? Unless it's one of the lonely little wankstains from the 'alternative' forum playing silly buggers...

Two of the top Immortals gone in a few days. From the original class Jimmy, Tin Oo and VS Achuthanandan remain as the most significant. Joanne Woodward and David Musuguri following closely. From the later entries Chamorro, Siphandone, Shi Ping and Kabosu are some big immortals. Jimmy though is now a God rather than a simple Immortal.

Zhang Lixiong (1913-2024) "Amateur!" (King Jimmy the Superimmortal) "Woof, woof, woooooof!" (A very worried Kabosu) "T...th...this does mean I can die too?" (Shi Ping) Age at death: 110 Known health issues: Hospitalised in critical condition in 2020, on oxygen and bedridden for most of 2021, advanced dementia, in ICU for six months in 2023. Cause of death: suddenly turned into dust. Alignment: One of the last two living founding major generals of PLA (the last one being now Wang Fuzhi), Zhang was a veteran of the Long March, a deputy of NPC between 1975 and 1978, and sometimes a political dissident. He was a symbol of immortality and a favourite of DL forums, whose reputation was cemented by 4 years spent in hospital. A good candidate to succeed Jimmy Carter as the next King, he is survived by the King, with Kabosu and Tin Oo now weighing their chances. At ease, soldier Zhang!

Of course it is very possible that he could live well into his 100's and even become a supercentenarian but as so often happens it only takes a fall or flu/chest infections at DVD's age and could be a goner in a heartbeat. In March 2017 my grandfather had what appeared to be a common cold and was still relatively active. Within 2 weeks he passed away with pneumonia at the age of 79.
