Mehmet Ali Agca, who infamously tried to kill the Pope in 1981, suffering from terminal cancer. Guaranteed QO everywhere.

Oh yes, why didn't we think of that? Bound to be pretty likely. Lets put the dead ex-pres in a freezer for 6 months to hide the fact from the public and even better we can get another 100 pages on Deathlist with mad conspiracy theories. Fuck me.

Jacob Rees-Mogg would be a Portillo moment, just due to his general twattishness and high profile, and the way he sums up what a bunch of chancers his party are.

As a football secretary, this plan would destroy more local football than anything else. It's the critical ages 16 to 18 when most lads stop the game, so to force them to do Rishis plan would loose thousands more from the game.

I'm intrigued how this would work as 'children' become adults when they reach 18, and afaik, are no longer their parents' responsibility. Still, with the Tories chances of regaining power somewhat diminished, they could promise everyone a unicorn shitting rainbows without ever have to worry about the practicalities of implementation.

Hell yeah, if you wanted to be totally cynical they're the kind of tribute band who can wing it onto the bill of a classic rock festival in the US. In their case the difference between tribute and on-going genuine band is marginal at best. When they rock into 2026 they'll pass a bizarre milestone for a working band - 50 years since they made a studio album! A very grey area indeed. So, this year, for example, I'll see Curved Air and Gong, both - I'd say - going concerns, though Curved Air went 38 years between studio albums and the current Gong have nobody from their days as route one go-to sounds for spliff lovers. By contrast I saw Atomic Rooster not that long ago and their claim to authenticity makes Iron Butterfly look like The Rolling Stones. S'cuse the music industry lecture here but what determines this is legal, is pretty much a contract by which you can prove you're the genuine band. In cases like Iron Butterfly there's (I guess) always been a line up with a management contract and gigs to fulfill, meaning the band can hire and fire and show continuity. Curved Air have mustered key originals - mainly singer Sonia Kristina - and that, a contract, and the absence of anyone else claiming to be Curved Air, is enough to get them gigs and a recording contract. Atomic Rooster, or so I heard, was basically a guy who'd been in the band briefly when they could barely get arrested, assembling a line up and then doing a deal with the widow of the guy who founded the band (and who has the rights to their stuff since her husband died), liscensing them to get out there.

Brilliant! We can't get enough people to fill public sector jobs as it is, let's introduce entry requirements to reduce the number even further. What an absolute bellend. Fuck off to Silicon Valley and let's start trying to fix the utter shambles you've made of this country.

Simeon I of Bulgaria died on this day 1097 years ago, aged 63. - Simeon was the son of Boris I, and was not expected to take the throne as he had an older brother, Vladimir; as such his father planned for him to become a church official, sending him to Constantinople to receive theological education in 878. He would return 10 years later to establish a monastery. - For political reasons, Boris would oust Vladimir (Boris had abdicated to become a monk, then Vladimir would reintroduce pagan religion into Bulgaria), had him blinded, and then put Simeon on the throne in 893. - Simeon's reign saw a literal trade war initiated by the Byzantines (using the Magyars as a proxy) in 895, and would continue fighting their forces throughout, most notably a war that began in 913 after Emperor Alexander stopped paying Bulgaria an annual tribute. One notable development of this latter war came in 924, when Simeon would send diplomats to seek assistance from the Fatimid Caliphate, hoping they would send their navy in to help him take Constantinople; these diplomats were captured and imprisoned by Byzantine forces. - Simeon would die from heart failure after 34 years as king, being succeeded by his son Peter I. No Bulgarian monarch would take the name 'Simeon' for a thousand years, until Simeon II in 1943.

‘I’m a Celebrity star…’ is right up there with ‘Harry Potter actor…’ as a fairly dispiriting career summary. As is ‘Midge Ure’s ex-missus…’, I suppose. I hope mine will read ‘Deathlist pioneer and occasional poster…’ in the Elham Valley Newsletter.
