He had many great roles but it’s this one getting creamed up by Joanne Whaley that is difficult to forget.

As an older git, my first exposure to Gambon was The Singing Detective, though as a teen I was ill-equipped to appreciate it. I bought it on DVD some years (decades) later and appreciated not only Gambon's acting (and that of Patrick Malahide, only previously seen in Minder), but the writing of Dennis Potter too. If the younger crowd only remember him for the Harry Potter films, its still a fair legacy.

I’m probably one of the very few who’s never seen a Potter (Harry not Dennis) film, but has seen The Cook etc (more than once). He had to eat his cuckolder’s cooked penis, and a convincing performance it was too.

Following Dick Fosbury in "killed by Only Connect" phenomenon. Gambon was one of four acting Michaels on the Connecting Wall this week.

You can't be that gutted, Shitehouse.

Clearly not much of a fan if you can't get the name of one of the central characters right.

I'm absolutely certain this would be impossible to do.

Course not. Just ask Ronald*.

*Can't 100% confirm whether or not Ronald is Mr Weasley.

Perhaps @Whitehouse has managed it and this is just a very revealing autocorrect error.

Here to explain the confusion:

In the Dutch translation of Harry Potter, Snape was called "Severus Sneep", just like we read about Harry's friends Ron Wemel (Weasley) and Hermelien Griffel (Hermione Granger). And Dumbledore was called Albus Perkamentus, which was probably a nod to parchment. Just a few names stayed exactly the same in Dutch, like Rubeus Hagrid, Hedwig, HP himself and Dobby.

Since I started reading the books in English though, it's the original spelling of the characters' names I think of.

Dumbledore already died once, in 2002

RIP, what a shame. He worked with Summer, Sr. once, many moons ago.

Apparently, at the beginning of his career, he caught the eye of Laurence Olivier after performing a theatrical audition of the opening soliloquy of Richard III. As much is on Wikipedia. What Wikipedia leaves out, however, is that he added in an overly-dramatic swing about a pole that was on the stage during that audition, without seeing a nail jutting out of it, which he cut his hand on, bleeding profusely in the moments following.

He was great in The King's Speech as George V- also showed up as narrator in several very good films- but I really liked him in Quartet- An excellent actor who will be missed

Feels like we've been losing a lot of Harry Potter actors as of late. It's actually a bit sad, HP was something I associate with my school days (it had gotten super popular at that time) and now we've reached that time where the older actors have began to die off.

In the past year....

Robbie Coltrane (Oct 2022) - Hagrid in all 8

Leslie Philips (Nov 2022) - Sorting Hat in no.1, 2 & 8

Apple Brook (Jan 2023) - Grubbly-Plank?? in no.5

Steve Mackey (Mar 2023) - Donaghan Tremlett in no.4

Paul Grant (Mar 2023) - Goblin in no.1

Jim McManus (April 2023) - Aberforth Dumbledore in no.5

Peter Simonischek (May 2023) - German wizard in the 3rd Fantastic beasts film

Barry Huckfield (August 2023) - Muggle in no.7 & 8

Matyelok Gibbs (August 2023) - Aunt Muriel in no.7

Michael Gambon (Sept 2023) - Albus Dumbledore in no.3-8

Time to bring this picture back.

Sir Michael Gambon CBE (1940–2023)
Malcolm McDowell (b. 1943)
Tim Pigott-Smith OBE (1946–2017)
Sir David Suchet CBE (b. 1946)
and Sir Antony Sher KBE (1949–2021)
sat on the sofa talking to Dame Edna (aka Barry Humphries CBE, 1934–2023).

Who will be the last survivor from this lineup? Suchet or McDowell?

McDowell has repeatedly snubbed honours. I reckon they've offered him everything by now, knighthood included.

Meh, each to their own. I don't feel strongly either way about ppl accepting or declining honours.

There are some very good people who have declined them over the years, but then there are also some total cunts. Depends why they're turning them down too ofc. With people like David Bowie and Stephen Hawking, they never liked a fuss being made and felt that it didn't suit them.

With Michael Winner, he snubbed an OBE "because that's what you get for cleaning the toilets well at King's Cross station"... he expected a knighthood. Silly twat ofc never got one. Why would the Queen give him a knighthood for writing catty restaurant reviews, directing a few shit films and appearing in some car insurance ads?
