Derby Dead Pool 2023

Recommended Posts

I haven’t really been paying attention this year so imagine my delight when I’ve just checked the DDP list to copy and paste this year’s survivors to my 2024 entry to find I’ve had 8 hits.  I think this year will be my 18th year so who knows, I might actually win it by the time I’m 95.

306 hits so far. Glock is a guarnteed 307th. Of Kernan and Breaks, I reckon at least one of them will QO. I reckon we'll get about 310–312 hits this year.

Both Kernan and Breaks got QOs.

That's 309 on the scorecards I believe?

Just over one day of 2023 left... I'll stick my money on 310 hits.

Three picks have died last minute today:

Shecky Greene
Eddie Bernice Johnson
Ana Ofelia Murguía

Does this count for Johnson?

Yes, I'm on watch. Greene has Hollywood Reporter, so there'll be Ahoo, too, in time.

Morguia is too late, I'd say.

When is the cut off?

QO for Morguia

Reviewing my 2023 teams' performance, and why not round the year off with an extremely boring addition to the List of the Lost – Swedish businessman Melker Schörling, a pick for my "Special:RandomInCategory/Living_people" team, apparently died early in December, without a QO.

“apparently” died without a QO. WTF were you expecting to happen?

Do we get a conclusion about last year? How many unique picks died?

If all points are settled at the top end of the leader board 2023 is my best DDP year so far.

9th Place, which is one up on my 10th place in 2006(ish). Let down by my Joker!

Think we need to give Banana their flowers (blossoms?) here. One of the biggest winning margins in history, and having the #1 and #2 teams (with completely different picks) for a while that late into the year, I'm saying Banana is now on the DDP Mount Rushmore.

Well done Banana!

A shame the canon disappointed but the differentials were well picked.

I ignored Tim Lobinger's obit chances too easily. Picked him in Alt Obits, just like that Brazilian soccer player. I should really make more out of all these names I find.

Which is protesting a bit too much, I guess. I'm happy with the 3rd place. My team was pretty "meh" but it mostly worked. After all, my 2nd best DDP result.

The 2023 DDP is one I can honestly say I will never be able to duplicate.  My team (Fade to Black) couldn't wait to start dying, with three - Pope Benedict, Pele and Christina Strutt (ultimately no QO for her anyway, though) - passing away in between the time I sent in my picks and the end of 2022. Natalie Fornasier as a disallowed pick meant a team of 19 (16 originals, 3 subs). Somehow, 11 died  - 10 with QOs and Daniel N. Paul (though his death ultimately didn't affect where I ended up in the standings) - and I finished second. Feeling humble.

Outside the top 40. I'm truly a casual now.

But if I didn't enter a casual team, I wouldn't have gotten to write a Napoleon XIV obit, so all worth it in the end.
