gcreptile 11,249 Posted Wednesday at 11:51 My teams: The Love Boat has entered a dark forest and either comes out with pots of gold, or gets eaten by wolves (or something like that) The Love Boat 1 Rick "Black Bart" Harris - joker 2 Theo Burrell 3 Kim Seong-Min - North Korean defector, now a radio station owner where he continues to be an activist 4 Nick Gandon - cricket player who has incurable pancreatic cancer - and might only get the year-end BBC obit. 5 Peter Yarrow 6 Mike Rinder - anti-Scientology activist, co-wrote Leah Remini's book 7 Shiu Ka-Chun - Hong Kong professor and politician, and arrested for his pro-democracy stance 8 Steve McMichael 9 Mary Schmucker 10 Trisha Goddard 11 Aaron Shattock - no news, bad news (for him?). Like Salmon Mousse, I found the wording of the family very pessimistic 12 James Baker (punk) 13 Harry Edwards - social activist taken from the B-team of last year 14 Roberta Flack 15 David "Heavy" Whalley - Scottish mountain rescue legend (an MBE, first at Lockerbie, too) 16 Jonathan Clements - the WSJ financial columnist, also covered by the Times.uk 17 Martyn Stewart - nature sound recordist, covered by the BBC for years. Petula Clark was still Downtowning from 1988, so she's a bit of a holdover. I couldn't resist the pleas to have Nicko McBrain on my team, and duetters Aaron Neville and Linda Ronstadt both get the nod - what if I picked the wrong one? Maybe they are both wrong! Shaun Ryder was just too delicious to possibly miss - he looks like he's a gasp away from meeting his maker every time I see him.

Charlotte Raven has been completely radio silent during 2024, despite there being lots of opportunities for her to chip in (she had a long history with Derek Draper, plus the assisted dying debate). Black Bart I'm not convinced QOs, but a) I think he has enough of a history with wrestlers who would be quick to pay tribute to him on social media (JBL most notably) b) too many people will pick him to ignore him. Bobby Czyz and Greg Haugen came from a discussion with a boxing journalist at the office Xmas party, definitely my best hopes for uniques.

msc 18,662 Posted Wednesday at 13:12 Oh yeah the theme teams. Here's the Dr Who one that only Biblio and Willz care about The Gallifrey Regeneration Game Vernon Dobtcheff JOKER Janet Henfrey Tristan De Vere Cole Anne Reid Christopher Benjamin David Garfield Mary Peach Martin Jarvis Eric Saward Philip Hinchcliffe Christopher Bidmead Anneke Wills Donald Douglas Milton Johns Wanda Ventham Roy Evans Tony Adams Ian Hogg Forbes Collins Hannah Gordon We can confirm the transfer deadline signing of acting great Vernon Dobtcheff from another, now retired, theme team. (Thanks for the headsup!) Forbes Collins some of you might know the face instantly, he was the moustachioed King John in Maid Marion and Her Merry Men (and similarly a bad guy in Vengeance on Varos). Hannah Gordon makes her long awaited bow, Tony Adams shows up after RTD's Nolly miniseries told us all he was still alive, and the rest are old familiars. And finally, the Notable Oldies team! Here's Who You Could Have Won Brian Glanville JOKER - The legendary grumpy but great sportswriter, now retired and quiet Mary Danby - Horror legend Diane Hoh - Horror legend Dick Taverne - Pan Breed favourite party jumping politician from the 70s PJ Hammond - Pan Breed favourite creator of Sapphire and Steel Lawrence Gordon Clark - Pan Breed favourite, director of all the 70s Ghost Stories for Christmas and also Harry's Game Candace Hilligoss - Yet another long term Pan Breed favourite, star of Carnival of Souls. Like I'd drop any of my long termers when alive. Peter Sasdy - Director of The Stone Tapes, Hands of the Ripper, etc Jacqueline Simpson - Acclaimed folklorist and academic I was shocked to find still alive Dame Lynley Dodd - The author of the Hairy Maclary kids books Christopher Awdry - The frail co-creator of Thomas the Tank makes the step up to the team. Sir Tim Waterstone - founder of a major bookshop, can't remember the name of it... Sir Robert Worcester - one of the major names in setting up psephology, whom I thought long dead. Turned 91 recently. Penelope Jardine - Author, editor, Muriel Spark's girlfriend and muse. Joseph McGrath - Directed various music videos for The Beatles, turned up as a talking head on Five recently aged 96. Alan Ayckbourn - Acclaimed playwright, last picked on the DDP in 2018 by me! Philip Springer - Santa Baby composer Hunter Davies - famed biographer, wrote the Beatles book, @Bibliogryphon has reminded me for 3 or 4 years that despite being on my shortlist no one's ever picked him in the DDP. Dr Shirley Summerskill - Labour government minister under Harold Wilson and winner of my WTF Still Alive award for this team Jerzy Skolimowski - horror director Took the opportunity to add some names I've been trying to fit into this team for a while.

time 8,714 Posted Wednesday at 13:35 Contrary to earlier suggestions, time has not passed, I've just been busy! As its show & tell, here are my 3 teams. time's-up team had one faller last year so in to replace M. Emmett Walsh is former Guardian TV critic Nancy Banks-Smith. She'll be 96 this year (I believe) and one would assume that when she goes The Guardian would mention it. Daphne Fowler finally gets a go at being joker. The Rons had four fallers; new names here are Ron Cook, actor, Ron Davies, ex-Welsh Secretary, famous for a Clapham Common incident, Ron Harris, chopper, and Ronald Perelman, the US billionaire (and not to be confused with Ron Perlman, the US actor). Ronald Venetiaan remains as joker. My all-new non-theme third team time's-2 Team is as follows Toni Arthur Gerry Barney Andrew Bowden (J) Gary Burghoff Wendy Carlos Bernie Clifton Barry Crocker Walter D. RadGuy 1,625 Posted Wednesday at 15:14 Considered retiring this year, but a rough 2024 performance (=36th place my worst since =41st in 2016 debut, 8/20 hits tied lowest with 2023) motivated me to give it another go. TO KILL A GABOR SISTER 2025 Theo Burrell - JOKER Black Bart Tom Brokaw Graham Caveney Noam Chomsky Jonathan Clements Roberta Flack Mari Grug Toni Hilland Jean-Marie Le Pen Steve McMichael Ludek Miklosko Cecile Richards Prunella Scales Mama Mary Schmucker Nigel Starmer-Smith Michael Tilson Thomas Johnnie Walker Joanne Woodward Peter Yarrow subs: Joe Doering Ian Smith James Whale Doering went in for Walker, of course. I know I'm like the third person to say this, but his death was announced literally 10 minutes after I submitted my team. Chatted with a few title contenders last night who said they weren't planning on picking Walker anyway, so his premature death + James Butts being revealed to have died off the radar (which I expected to happen but was hoping would stay quiet a bit longer so he'd waste space on a few DDP teams) puts me at a disadvantage already, I think. My off-forum research was even worse than usual. No real hope for unique picks but I have hope a few names are only on a few teams. I'm surprised Mari Grug, whose particular metastasis is one of the worst you can have for breast cancer, didn't get more traction (still one of my weaker picks). Also surprised Cecile Richards was never 'revealed' on forum (besides a few people posting her in their public deadpool entries, which, well, started with me with the Windy City pool) and even more surprised she was avoided by so many big teams -- looked terrible at a Medal of Freedom ceremony in November and missed some big event a few weeks ago. I think she's most likely a goner this year. Burrell's a bit of a risky joker compared to your dead-certs like Black Bart (who I thought was a bit of a QO risk). Other than that, though, I feel alright. I put in more frail old types than I normally do to make up for the fact that the cancer picks haven't been cancer-ing like they used to these past couple years. Modern medicine, damn it. Cheers to 2025 and good luck to all. Edit: Oh yeah -- and I submitted a theme team for the first time in years. Brought back my American football team from 2019. Gooseberry Crumble 5,440 Posted Wednesday at 16:25 Peter Hinwood of Rocky Horror fame is the choice I was most nervous about not being unique and well we shall see but I'm already aware from glancing through the thread that I haven't got 60 unique picks because @livingbygrace also selected the brilliant choice of Tommy Sands, who he called Tom Sands which gives me slim hopeits a different person but I don't think so!! Hoping I manage to hold it at 59 unique picks but time will tell! Regardless I've really enjoyed the process of putting the teams together.
