Moot point as the BBC has done a proper report, but I don't think that link to the Crewe local news would count unless the BBC quotes the report as well (but i might be wrong).

I cannot tie him to the mid/late eighties UK chart entries (they peaked at #84 in 1988), but they were better known Stateside. Here he is lead singing on Fo Fi Fo from 1983:
