If the Tories have got any sense they'll elect a leader who has no connection to Johnson or his government. I'm not sure how many that leaves, but there must be one or two backbenchers still untainted. If they do go this route that rules out all those names you mention plus Gove, Braverman Dorries etc.

Unlikely they'll show any sense though...

Tom Tugenhadt is mercifully free of Bojo taint

Conservative Home website recently tested out the likely voting on leaders and the top three were Ben Wallace, Penny Morduant and Liz Truss in that order

Before we free ourselves of this thread a couple of things will be interesting

1 - The amount of shit that hits the fan now Bojo's power and patronage are spaffed up the metaphorical wall and people who know stuff can sell it to journalists

2 - How hard the parliamentary party will try in the next few days to install someone else (actually Raab's job if they play by the book) as the caretaker PM. If they can't find ministers to serve under Bojo as caretaker but the same people say anyone else would do, it'll likely keep us amused for a few more days.

This is the difficult bit:

There are going to be so many hats going into the ring but in getting to a victory for each one will require a balancing act to get through the two stages

I think Liz Truss must be favourite because she has seemed to come through this shambles unscathed but it is so obvious she wants the job (even though the evidence is that it is beyond her capabilities)

Tom Tugendhadt & Tobias Ellwood will slug it out for the One Nation side of the vote but considering the 2019 intake are almost all pro-brexiteers they might struggle to get on the ballot that goes to the Tory Members. They might do better with the MPs who would face a challenge from the LDs at the next election.

Jeremy Hunt is a possibility and he came close in 2019 and I would not rule out Michael Gove but he really does come across as a double-crossing coke headed waste of flesh which even his friends (if he had any) would struggle to contradict.

Sunak, Patel, Zadhawi or Javid might get on the final ballot but will they appeal to the blue rinse walking corpses that are the Tory Membership?

As some on the Twitter said, if Johnson hangs around until October, he'll stuff the Lords with his Russian cronies (and other benefactors/enablers).

Confirmation, if it were needed, that Johnson is taking the piss/doesn't know (or care) what he's doing. (delete as applicable).

It’s like being shown a list of Gacy, Bundy, Dahmer, Chikatilo, Kroll, DeAngelo, Ramirez and Gein, and asking which one you’d rather be raped and murdered by. Only worse.

Is this the 3rd straight prime minister to resign? If so that’s just sad.

His speech was so utterly devoid of contrition, humanity and consideration of anyone but himself.

And he has the gall to fudge together a new cabinet of unskilled no-marks and shamble on for the next couple of months.

There are no abusive terms fit for this disgusting monster.

And make no mistake, his eventual successor will very much be a Johnson Tory, not a traditional one - they’ve all been ousted. The fish rots from the head down, and by this stage the fish is utterly putrid beyond recognition. Those around him are similar deceitful, crypto-fascist, self-serving, immoral, probity-devoid goons from the same Brexity cult.

The Conservative party will take a long time to detoxify and regenerate, and until it has, nobody within it should be anywhere near a position of power.

Took 13 years and 4 leaders last time.

3rd PM to resign in 6 years. Good job we didn't get that coalition of chaos under Ed Miliband! Dodged a real bullet there!
