I would hope they had these conversations while he was still racing, and decided to keep him alive. It's not unheard of for drivers to end up in a similar position. Is it something you make preparations for, or is it something you never talk about because if you did you'd never get in the car in the first place? Acceptance of the risk is part of racing, even more so in Schumacher's day. And you never think it's going to happen to you. (20 years between Senna and Bianchi of course, covering the vast majority of Schumi's career).
