Deathers, I posted on it when I jacked in my job because of it. I hope it goes to fucking wall, taking every cunt who are in it, with it. Its a backdoor rise in NI contributions. Because those in power fucked up over the years. It is basically a mechanism for weak willed people to feel good about themselves and how 'smart' they are. Fucking retards.

Hmmm.

I was talking about those fucking millionaires in Parliament. The ones with inherited wealth. The ones who are changing the lives and shaping attitudes for generations. The ones who have never had a job in the real world. The ones who say they know better while fucking you up the arse.

Interesting you focus on the business community rather than the politicians. Of course people flock here, of course millions of people are employed. Pay them a higher wage on decent conditions (rather than a living wage which isn't one at all) and everyone flourishes. Flood the market with poorly paid people and lots of them who work for peanuts and your tax take is less, your productivity is less. And the millionaires employing them are finding time to remove even more tax take by using every loophole imaginable. Flood the country with that kind of person sure (and it's increased burden on the public sector), but expect there not to be enough money to pay for what I and others may have aspired to 40 years ago.

I'm interested in the future of aspiration. Here's what seems to be aspiration these days. A job that pays £7 an hour. A job that might be there tomorrow, maybe not, but maybe the day after. A home...good luck with that on those wages. A pay freeze for eight years and looking like wages will hardly rise until 2030 (and that's without Brexit, continued austerity until 2030 was predicted 4 years ago). Working until you drop. An old age (if you're lucky) with no care.

You are right LFN. It is a live for today society, but we can't have that and aspiration. After all what is there to aspire to tomorrow?

And that's the world these political millionaires are continuing to shape. A society that lives from waking up until going to sleep every day.

Maybe not a good time to mention that the recent Budget increased the amount given to overseas aid while equally decreasing the spend on education, local government, etc. Talk all you like about the UK public sector, but the political millionaires are taking what little tax take there is and spending it abroad rather than here.

But hey, I'm all right Jack...

Its a perfectly good time to mention it, its a fucking disgrace!

Yes, I didnt focus on the Political millionaires, no point really.

Even the Corbyns of the Political spectrum have never done a days work in their lives let alone been educated at Bash St school or understand ordinary people.

Its all a bit fucked innit.

Westminster parties haven't given us much choice have they?

Thanks for the banter back and forth LFN, as they say there's no point in listening to people who agree with you all the time, we only learn from other folks' disagreements and debate (without resorting to sprinting through the courtyards of Westminster with a weapon).

And I really hope there is a greater Great Britain sometime in the future, if not for me and you, then for your grandkid at least.

I wonder what the Government will do next to start us off?

Agree about rich politicians.  Zak Goldsmith was a particularly odious example and I was delighted when he lost his seat in the recent by-election (even more delighted as I bet he'd lose).   Seeing his smug face crumple when he realised he'd been beaten was almost worth the £250k of taxpayers money it cost to host the election.   A cost he should be made liable for, considering it only took place as a result of his massive ego trip.    Jacob Rees-Mogg is another one who should be marched in to the sea and I sincerely hope there is a special place in hell reserved for George Osborne.

I do have a lot of time for Sadiq Kahn, though.   Not particularly because of his politics, but I just like his style, as well as the fact he is the son of a bus driver and went to a grim comprehensive school, etc.

Another thing that really annoys me off at the moment is the rise of the 'smug white liberal'.  I'm fed up of Facebook inspired protesters gathering in city centres to protest against Trump, war in Syria and Brexit.  All perfectly laudable causes it could be argued, but what agitates me is that these almost exclusively middle class, holier than thou, simpering nonentities hold their vigils seemingly completely oblivious to the plight of the homeless people who are sat right in front of them, nor do they appear to care one jot for the rights of the workers in the surrounding shops, who are mainly slaving away on a minimum wage, zero hour contract.  Then they all trot off home - probably via a tax dodging Starbucks to buy an unethically sourced caramel frothichino, ffs - to their nice houses and make sure they update their Facebook status so that everyone who knows them knows that they're doing their bit to save the world.   Meanwhile, the forgotten members of our society, the dispossessed, the disabled, the elderly and the unemployed struggle on as best they can.   Who is marching for them?  No one, it seems.   Can't the people who take selfies of themselves at demonstrations do anything more constructive towards making the world a better place than this? And if they really felt strongly enough about an issue, can't they at least riot?

Anyway, feel free to ignore me.   I'm a dreadful old socialist at the best of times, but recently I've become radicalised by the videos of crusty old anarchist Martin Wright, to the point that even Jeremy Corbyn is too right wing for me.   These days, I'm becoming ever more sure that mankind's only hope of salvation is the collapse of society, the chaos and war which will arise from it, before a glorious new dawn rises from the ashes, or something like that.  Once we've abolished money, abolished national borders - take that Scot Nats! -  and abolished God, we might see some progress

Failing that, I think we should give Black Power a go.

I never got the anti-Trump protests in the UK. "Oh, folk in a different country are protesting, I best resign or something." Most of these things seem to consist of folk who can afford to protest. Not really much of a socialist but I do share what appears to be DDT's disdain for trustafarians.

No, I don't think they are truly socialists.  In the extremely unlikely event of Labour winning the next general election, when the going gets really tough, these people won't stand by their supposed Corbynite principles and in an effort to protect their own interests, they'll rapidly abandon the cause and crawl back in the direction of self-serving bourgeois complacency.  But don't get me started on that. :old:

This is the solution that nobody dares talk about.

As an excuse for looking at a young Jenny Agutter naked this was an excellent post.

As a flippant comment to my serious suggestion it's the kind of reasoning that prevents discussion.

There is a world of difference between withdrawing medical treatment at a certain age and actually going to the trouble and expense of killing people.

We all know that we will all die - medical science is extending that time to a level that is not sensible or practical.

A lot of people will live well beyond 70 without medical treatment, 25% of us don't make it anyway and some of us will die as a result of not getting medical treatment.

This is already happening now with much younger cancer sufferers where budgets don't allow treatment - my suggestion just reallocates the budget to those who have had a shorter time on the planet whilst also meaning we are able to care properly for those of us who are old but unable to look after themselves and for those that can they will have a pension that enables them to live a full life.

This is not a full costed proposal but I would like to see a discussion that included one by people who have access to the facts and are paid to look after the country.

I was in a meeting on a phone so you were never going to get a fully reasoned argument but an approach like this would result in a two tier system where the rich would pay for private health care.

Agree but you are never going to equalise the position of the rich and the poor (in the current capitalist system).

Otherwise arguably we should have a National Yacht Buying Service?

The rich being able to pay to go private would not change the basic principle that the public money available would be redistributed from keeping old people alive longer (many in misery) to younger focussed health care, better non medical care for the elderly and better pensions for those physically able.

The 25% of people who would be dead at 70 anyway will be unaffected (directly) but may be beneficially affected indirectly by taking a little more responsibility for their health as they grow older in the knowledge that blood pressure tablets etc will not be available come 70 which may save some of them from dying.
