Statistically the likelihood of 3 MPs being 100 or over (inc Ronald Atkins)  at any one time or for any single MP to reach 100  is so low that one of them  must surely die before October 9. Therefore either Michael Shaw or Patrick Duffy will almost certainly die before their 100th birthday.Obviously as there is a lot longer before Shaws birthday he is most likely to die before he reaches 100. I predict Michael Shaw will die before the end of summer. Ronald Atkins and Patrick Duffy will probably follow not long after!

Once again it seems my prediction was wrong and Michael Shaw will become one of 3 living British MPs to become a centenarian on friday .Does anyone know if this has ever happened before ?

PS the next oldest is Jill Knight who is due to turn  100 in July 2023 so I doubt there'll be 4 alive at the same time, surely !

Still time left. Don't tempt fate. Dame Jill (one of the authors of section 28) is a considerably more controversial figure than Messrs Atkins, Duffy and Shaw.

Only living Counselor of State of Finland (If we don't count another corpse Paavo Lipponen) Riitta Uosukainen (b. 1942) appeared on the Arto Nyberg tv talk show a couple of days ago. Talked about her husband, Topi, and his Alzheimer's disease and how she can "notice bad people from their facial features" or something like that. She talked a lot but most of it didn't make much sense.

I can't find a thread for general MPs, so I made one, with the 99% chance that one already exists.

This is for those people not big enough to have their own thread, like Bill Cash.

Stanley Schumacher, a former Speaker of the Alberta Legislature, has died. He was 87. Schumacher was a federal Canadian politician as a member of the Progressive Conservative party from 1968 to 1979. He stepped aside in '79 to allow party leader Joe Clark to run. Clark won his seat and became Prime Minister. Schumache ran provincially in 1986, winning his seat and serving as an MLA until 1997. He was a deputy Speaker before being elected as Speaker in 1993.

Marjatta Väänänen, a politician in Finland during dictator/president Kekkonen's presidency (served as minister of culture and minister of education in the 70s/80s) has died from a long term illness. A name probably everyone finn over the age of 50 recognizes. She was 97.

One of the last members of the 70s-80s centrist group "Black dozen" in the parliament that opposed changes to Finland's foreign policy and were on "Kekkonen's side" who, however, already had advanced alzheimer's disease back then.

This means there are only two members of the Black dozen (Musta tusina) alive,

Taisto Tähkämaa (b. 1924, former defence minister and minister of agriculture and forestry)

Heimo Linna (b. 1925, another former minister of agriculture and forestry)

The liberal K-line has more living members:

Seppo Sarlund (b. 1942, lobbyist)

Paavo Väyrynen (b. 1946, perennial candidate for president and veteran politician)

Mauri Pekkarinen (b. 1947, has held multiple positions in governments during the 2000s, now a MEP)

Seppo Kääriäinen (b. 1948, former defence minister)

Matti Vanhanen (b. 1955, current minister of finance. Has had some heart problems.)

edit: Got them wrong, the K-line was on Kekkonen's side and the Black dozen opposed Kekkonen. Decaying brain

René Felber, president of Switzerland in 1992, dead at 87:

He was not strictly the president in the usual sense. The effective head of state of Switzerland is a 7-person cross-party Federal Council, comprising of the heads of the seven Federal Departments (Finance, Home Affairs, Foreign Affairs etc.). The President is selected from one of these members for a year - but has little power beyond chairing meetings and representing Switzerland abroad.
