Labour politician, Army officer and ex-Times correspondent Lord Alun Gwynn Jones turns 100 today! He was ennobled by Harold Wilson in 1964 to serve as the worlds only Minister of Disarmament. After he retired from thr Lords in 2015, he said "I told Wilson that I would take the job if I was not expected to support every aspect of Labour policy. Wilson puffed on his pipe and said "not many of us do". Happy Birthday and welcome to the 100 Club

I would like to recommend Joanne Woodward and act on an excuse to post a picture on here of her rather handsome husband!

Totally wrong. I think you know the difference and are trolling, you are too good at DPing to make such a comment. There is one vitally important fact you left out. You should go into politics.

I appreciate it, but I could easily have sent this excellent gif your way. Respect for your success. While I have my own ambitions for the remainder of 2019, best of luck to you in your bid to repeat as site champion.

You say that, but he hasn’t actually empty-chaired him yet. Much like he did with a Labour MP in 2010, where he replaced him with a Peppa Pig toy. He’s being decidedly lenient with Johnson. But then they were on the same payroll for a long time.

I have created the pool (funeral home) on the DSCDP site. The name is Fossorius Endeavour (hey, I offered for people to make suggestions, got none, so deal with it). I have sent invites to the people who have expressed interest so far, so if everyone accepts the invite, that will put us at 7 to start with. To those folks, the invite should go to the e-mail you registered with on the site, or you can log in and probably find it somewhere under your profile. If you think you should have gotten something, but didn't, let me know. Unlimited capacity, so come one, come all. Just register a name on the site and let me know what it is, and I will send the invite. Once you have accepted, you have 39 days from now to make and modify your picks. The pool locks down on January 15th, and then the only changes you can make are on trade day (the 15th of each month, 1 trade only). The competition is primarily within the pool, but there is also a site-wide top ten competition, as well as Funeral Home competition based on average player score. That's the one I think we can win, if some of our aces and super sleuths show up.

It's also somewhat surprising that Ray Illingworth, captain on Willis' first Ashes tour in 1970-1 and fellow TV commentator is still alive despite numerous recent health issues.

Missed this in May but that healthy looking oldster with his arm around Dickie O is George Layton, right?

A reminder that, John Edrich still lives, 19 years after he was told he had seven years left, cured of leukaemia by mistletoe.

He (Simon Garfield) wrote The Wrestling, a pretty good book about the history of Mick McManus and Big Daddy and all that jazz. Although given how that ones goes, and his other books include the history of AIDS, I expect his Fonts book to go: "They created a new text font. Sadly, his wife then got incurable motor neurone cancer..."

Lady Bird was 94 when she died. Betty Ford was 93 when she died. Nancy Reagan was 94 when she died. Barbara Bush was 92 when she died. Enter Rosalynn Carter. Turns 93 years old in 2020, so prime 21st century First Lady dying age. Jimmy is clearly on his way out after many recent hospitalizations, and like the Nixon and Bush couples, I doubt they'll stand to be separated for very long. Get her on Deathlist 2020!

That is a shock. He'll probably be remembered for the Ashes 8-53 (?) but I remember that Viv Richards had a very low regard for him as a bowler and whenever he came on to bowl to Richards he used to smash him round the park. If it was a short illness he obviously didn't approach death off his customary run up!

I'm leaving my shortlist till I see Spade Cooley and Death Impends emailed teams on Hogmanay. No wait, I mean, I'm working on something. Ahem.

Oh, I'm sure Spade was speaking about german politician and cult pick Manfred Stolpe. I think it's time to start considering Jeopardy host Alex Trebek. He's getting a little old now. Personally, I am currently torn between fielding another high effort / low result-theme team or a C-team. There are just soo many good names. I can't wait for the whole circus to start again.

One of two 400 year old elms, known as the Preston Park Twins, and considered to be the oldest Elms in the world/Europe (take your pick), was felled yesterday after succumbing to Dutch Elm Disease.
