3 pointsThe identity of a retired colonel of aviation of the Republic of Belarus, who was shot down in eastern Ukraine, became known The dead pilot turned out to be Nikolai Markov, born in 1955, a native of the Novgorod region of the Russian Federation, a graduate of the Chernigov Higher Military Aviation Pilot School, graduated in 1976. He served in the USSR Air Force in Kazakhstan, East Germany, in Belarusian Postavy and Lida, where he was a regiment navigator. Worked in Africa. According to the information that Markov published on his page on the My World social network, he indicated Lida as his hometown. And in one of the African countries, he got a house and a second family. How did a 67-year-old military pensioner end up on the Ukrainian front? Russian aviators explain this by the lack of pilots in the Russian Aerospace Forces and report that Markov flew "from some kind of PMC" (private military company). Information about the death of the pilot appeared on May 12. The Su-25 attack aircraft was shot down at an altitude of 1,500 meters, presumably from the Soviet S-125 anti-aircraft missile system over the city of Popasna (Luhansk region, Ukraine). During the pair flight, Markov was the wingman, the leading commander is called the "retired general" 63-year-old Kanamat Botashev, who died in the same place over Popasna 10 days later - on May 22 from a hit by a Stinge. Markov was buried on May 17 at the New Cemetery in the city of Lida. State media did not report the incident. © telegram channel from Gomel "Flagpole" https://d2uy8l7fpcdb88.cloudfront.net/by/vybary-2020/stala-izvestna-lichnost-letchika-kotoryj-byl-sbit-na-vostoke-ukrainy-na-storone-vojsk-rossijskih-i-pohoronen-v-belarusi.html Markov at the controls of a helicopter in the Central African Republic, photographed in 2014

1 pointJawaharlal Nehru died on this day 58 years ago, aged 74. Nehru attended Trinity College beginning in 1907, and started to become interested in Indian politics at the time. He returned to India in 1912, and in 1920, led a civil disobedience movement in what is now the state of Uttar Pradesh. Beginning in 1927, Nehru began to draft ideas for an Indian declaration of independence, and read out a pledge for independence on New Years' Eve in 1929. Following India's eventual independence in 1947, Nehru was appointed as Prime Minister, a position he would hold until his death. He oversaw religious conflicts between the Hindu nation and the Muslim East (now Bangladesh) and West Pakistans. In 1962, the Sino-Indian War occurred when Chinese troops invaded disputed territory (this was DURING the Cuban Missile Crisis, by the way), which saw an Indian defeat. Despite this loss, Nehru was still beloved by India, seen as a founding father, and his cremation the day after his death was attended by 1.5 million people.

1 pointAn odd thing to complain about I must say. In one day an ancient Italian PM, HOF Yes Drummer, HOF Depeche Mode keyboardist, and of course Ray Liotta... Maybe one should appreciate the peace instead of asking for chaos?

1 pointAh very sad... kind of the stable constant in that band. And while the status of Depeche Mode was already mostly comatose, I guess now the band is definitely dead.

1 pointBeen thinking a lot about how times have changed. I have no idea how Sweet Caroline became adopted as a great English anthem. There are better Diamond songs. The Queen has had a lot of luck with anniversaries of her reign, compared with the suffering of her subjects at the same time, save for the annus horribilis. I was tempted to post summat about that in her thread, if only to annoy the fuck out of LFN and Windsor. Anyway, sounds like summat akin to banging pots and pans for the NHS. The country being persuaded into yet another empty gesture, benefiting nobody but the elite's control over the populace.

1 pointViasna human rights activists declared May 21 the Day of Political Prisoner in Belarus. It was on this day a year ago in Shklov colony No. 17 that Vitold Ashurok, a political prisoner from Berezovka, died under unknown circumstances. Instead of telling the truth about Vitold's death, the Investigative Committee opened a criminal case against those who chanted "Shame!" at the announcement of the five-year sentence to Ashurka. Among the suspects was Vitold's younger brother Andrei, who was eventually forced to leave Belarus for Poland. Andrei Ashurak: I remember this moment, it was May 25 last year. The body was taken out on a wheelchair. Here he is, lying with his head bandaged, and next to him stands a comrade in a vest and smiling. He says: "Sorry, we wrapped his head, we accidentally injured his body when we took it out of the fridge." Who are you telling this to? It was a moment of helplessness. I want to take revenge on them when you see it, but you can't do it, because you still need to bring it home. That was the hardest moment, and you're getting used to the rest. https://youtu.be/weCCKcNh3OU https://d16gbq1owzocfa.cloudfront.net/_mobile_/articles/291256/ https://spring96.org/be/news/107662 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitold_Ashurak
