Five years later: Tekla Juniewicz, world's second-oldest person, oldest Polish person ever dead at 116. Lucile Randon is the last person living from Clorox Bleachman's December 2018 list of oldest folks. There's a 3-year gap between the world's oldest person and the #2 now.

I agree, they look frail but much better than in the New Year's pictures and the July ones. Here's a list of all his known current and past health issues, I did a similar "health history" for Bob Dole ten months ago. Most of the earlier stuff is from Doctor Zebra's Medical History of American Presidents that however does not have any post-Presidency health problems listed: 1952 - Lowered into a nuclear reactor to turn one screw to help avert a nuclear disaster, exposed to "levels of radiation unthinkable today" and told he might never be able to have children again. 1977 - Tear gas irritation during a visit to Iran. 1978 - Painful hemorrhoids that left him unable to walk, treated with demerol. 2010 - Briefly hospitalised after falling ill. May 2015 - Cancels trip to Guyana due to "feeling ill" August to December 2015 - Undergoes elective surgery to remove a small mass on his liver on the 3rd of August, prognosis for a full recovery initially said to be excellent. 12 August: Announced that he suffers from metastasized cancer. DL sweepstake started (has outlived all the 30 predictions by over 5 years now). 20 August: Announced that it is agressive melanoma that has spread to in his brain and liver, had a metastatic melanoma tumor removed from his liver earlier. Begins treatment with the immunotherapy drug pembrolizumab, about to start radiotherapy. 6 December: Announced that he has beaten cancer, continues to receive three-week immunotherapy treatments. 13 May 2019 - Falls and breaks his hip, undergoes hip replacement surgery. 6 October 2019 - Falls, suffers a forehead injury and needs 14 stitches. 21 October 2019 - Falls, suffers minor pelvic injury. 11 November 2019 - Subdural hematoma, surgery to relieve pressure from his brain. 3 December 2019 - Hospitalised with urinary tract infection. Not as impressive as Dole's, Zsa Zsa's or Kumar's, but still very impressive. He's been at death's door atleast two times.

Former Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan is 77 today. He joined Purple in 1969, replacing original vocalist Rod Evans, when they had decided to pursue a ;heavier; style than had been followed thus far. He stayed for four years, appearing on some of their most successful albums - In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head, and Who Do We Think We Are. During this period he was also Jesus Christ on the original recording of RIce & Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ, Superstar. Subsequently, he formed his own eponymous band, Gillan, which achieved a UK number 3 album, Glory Road, and joined Black Sabbath as vocalist for a period, before re-joining the re-formed Purple in 1984. He also appeared in Rock Aid Armenia, a charity album in aid of victims of the Armenian earthquake of 1988; he maintained ties with Armenia, and was honoured by the Armenian President (along with Tony Iommi, Geoff Downes & Jon Dee) with the Order of Honour in 2009. WhoCares, a charity supergroup was formed by Gillan & Iommi on the back of this effort.

Julius Henry "Groucho" Marx died on this day in 1977, aged 86. The cause of death was given as pneumonia. At some point either before or during (but more likely before) 1949, Marx was invited to join the Delaney Club (disputed; numerous names have been given over the years), but immediately declined, famously stating "I do not want to belong to a club that would accept me as one of its members". Marx was also noted for his distinctive look, which led to the manufacturing of Groucho Glasses, modeled after his appearance. What is less known is that the moustache was fake until his retirement, when he decided to grow one for a laugh. Marx's death was overshadowed by that of Elvis Presley, which occurred 3 days earlier. "I would like to thank you for all the enjoyment you have brought to the world." - Anonymous Clergyman. "And I would like to thank you for all the enjoyment you have taken out of the world." - Groucho Marx

Made a public appearance yesterday: https://www.seiska.fi/Kotimaa/Talta-nayttaa-Paavo-Lipponen-81-nyt-avaa-Seiskalle-kuulumisiaan-Terveys-on-stabiili/1176373 Says his health is stable, and looks quite well. However, I think this is the first time he has been seen using a walking stick. Swan posted an update to her blog last month. She is apparently doing a lot better now and the tumors in her brain have shrunk. She also had COVID in March.

John Deacon, the famous musician well known for being the bass guitarist of the legendary British rock band Queen who left the music business in 1997 to live a very private life with his family, is 71 today. Debra Paget, American actress remembered for her roles in 1950s films as "Broken Arrow", "Princess of the Nile", "Demetrius and the Gladiators", "The Ten Commandments", "Love Me Tender" (Elvis Presley's first film), or for her snake-dance scene in "The Indian Tomb", is 89 today.

Lots of buzzz on the socials that Virginia Grohl, mother of Dave, has died (possibly in July) but nothing official, (either confirmation or denial). Supposedly originated from a live Instagram from Dave's daughter Violet.

Augustus, the first emperor of the Roman Empire, died on this day 2008 years ago, aged 75. Born as Gaius Octavius, he was a great-nephew of Julius Caesar. After his father died in 59 BC, and his stepfather had no interest in raising him, he was raised by his grandmother Julia (Julius' sister) until she died when he was 12- his parents then took him back in. After his great-uncle was assassinated in 44 BC, Octavius was listed as Caesar's adoptive son in his will (Caesarion, his only male child, was out of wedlock with Cleopatra and thus not recognized by Roman law). He took the family name, and used his old one as his personal name- "Octavian". Before becoming emperor, Octavian conquered Armenia (34 BC)- and after finding out that his top general Mark Antony would give away Roman territory for his own sons to rule, he declared war on Egypt, conquering it in 30 BC. On January 16, 27 BC, Octavian was given the title "Augustus" ("illustrious") by the senate, which is seen as the beginning of his reign. He was named "father of the country" in 2 BC. Towards the end of his reign, in 9 AD, The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest against the Cherusci Germans was fought, with a massive Roman defeat. Augustus dissolved the legions that fought the battle. Augustus allegedly died as the result of eating a fig poisoned by his wife Livia- modern historians believe that it could have been a possibility, and do not rule out assisted suicide (his health was in decline at that point). His adoptive son Tiberius was then named by the senate as the "princeps".

Already past midnight in Taiwan and a lot of other places, Taiwanese Buddhist monk Master Hsing Yun is 95 today! He's a major religious figure in Taiwan, one of the most prominent Humanistic Buddhism proponents in the world, writer, founder of the both Fo Guang Shan and Buddha's Light International Association and one of Taiwan's "Four Heavenly Kings", major buddhist leaders who have all founded a prominent organization (these organizations are called the "Four Great Mountains"). Hsing Yun was the oldest of the four, two of them are still alive, the other being nun, teacher, philanthropist Master Cheng Yen. His grandmother was a practicing Buddhist, he entered the monastic life at 12 around 1939 and fled to Taiwan following the communist victory ten years later. He's quite pro-China in political questions and this has helped him return to mainland China to build organizations there. He suffers from diabetes, heart problems and has had three strokes. The first picture was taken in 1997 when he met pope John Paul II at the Vatican, where they prayed for world peace.

Hello everyone! I've lurked here for a few months and decided to jump in. Looks like a fun place and I love the dark humor (humour?). I hope to play some of the pools eventually. Until then it's fun to see who really beats back the grim reaper time and time again.

Frank Williams has died only 6 days before his 91st birthday. Only Ian Lavender (76) of the regular cast of Dad's Army alive now although Frank Williams did not appear in Dad's Army until series 3. He has outlived the Verger (Edward Sinclair) by 45 years! Originally when dad's Army ended, they were going to appear in pantomome as the Ugly Sisters but Sinclair had to be replaced. When Gladys was married in the last episode of Hi-di-Hi, she was 'married' by Williams & the Verger had to be played by Colin Bean who was Private Sponge in Dad's Army. A sad week for Dad's Army fans as Gordon Peters (95) who died a week ago appeared in 4 episodes of the series and once had his own sitcom which was named after him.
