Peggy Shippen Arnold died on this day 218 years ago, aged 44. Peggy's family had Loyalist tendencies during the American Revolution, but were considered neutral. After the British captured Philadelphia in 1777, the Shippens invited soldiers to their home, including major John Andre, who kept close contact with Peggy after withdrawing in 1778. In that same year, Peggy met Benedict Arnold, and the two fell for each other. Peggy's father Edward was skeptical of him at first (Arnold was charged with embezzlement of government funds), but he allowed Peggy and Benedict to marry, with the wedding occurring on April 8, 1779. It is very likely that Peggy was what turned Benedict Arnold into a traitor, with her continued correspondence with Andre, and, according to an interview of her acquaintance Theodosia Provost (conducted by Aaron Burr- her future husband), Peggy "was disgusted with the American cause". Arnold resigned from his post shortly before his wedding and also began to communicate with Andre, whom he met in 1780. Arnold soon obtained the command of West Point in New York, weakening its defenses and giving Andre maps of the base. Andre was soon captured, the plan was exposed, and Benedict was outed as a traitor (Andre was hanged). George Washington planned to meet Arnold at his home- he fled. Peggy acted hysterical to convince Washington she had nothing to do with his betrayal, and this gave Benedict more time to make his escape to New York City, where she and their infant son Edward soon joined him. After the fighting ended in 1781, the Arnolds moved to London, with Peggy accepting a 350 pound reward from George III for her service. The Arnolds would move to New Brunswick in Canada later that decade, before moving back to England in 1791. After Benedict's death in 1801, Peggy auctioned off their house and many of her belongings to pay for their debt. Peggy reportedly died of cancer.

One-off search for the phrase "Lois Pope" turned up nowt so I'll mention her (b. 7 June 1933). Some of her vast fortune has clearly gone on maintaining her looks by way of having some work done. The fortune she's generously sharing was largely earned by Generoso Pope Jr. her second husband who didn't see his 62nd birthday. He left the CIA to build a publishing empire boasting The National Enquirer and Weekly World News. Generoso's alleged links still trouble conspiracy theorists with one side seeing him as succeeding partly due to mob links whilst Christopher Mellon (ex-intelligence turned UFO truth seeker) is amongst those claiming the gory tabloids had an official function leaking nuggets of amazing truth into their surreal stories suggesting space aliens were alive and well on this planet. Oh aye, we were talking about his widow, who'll likely give generously of points in those dead pools that count the low hanging fruit and accept US obits. This'll be her site: https://www.life-edu.org/about/lois-pope/

A table showing how many credited cast members are still living from every single episode of Classic Doctor Who. For those who don't want to read the whole thing, the only episode with a confirmed sole survivor is The Deadly Assassin that being Tom Baker, there are five episodes with non of the main cast (Doctor, Companion, UNIT trio) surviving those being Spearhead from Space, Doctor Who and the Silurians, The Time Warrior, Death to the Daleks and The Monster of Peladon however all of these episodes do have at least one actor confirmed to be living. A star in the confirmation box means that the number of living guest cast is possibly lower than stated due to some actors having very few credits (such as the children in The Celestial Toymaker) in their acting career or having stopped acting decades ago but with no confirmation of death (or living status). For a lot of the later episodes those numbers are probably the most accurate due to the fact that actors will have been younger at the time and are probably still alive but for some no new information will be found out about them before their death, which the Doctor Who fandom will almost certainly know about somehow when it ultimately happens. According to lots of people who know him on facebook, he's critical and "in his final hours" seemingly with terminal cancer, as he revealed he was suffering from cancer in December 2020. He's been in failing health for years with heart problems, recurrent erysipelas and everything. Major Eastern Orthodox Church leaders really aren't doing well compared to Ayatollahs, major Hindu, Buddhist, Christian leaders. Oldest with a wiki page as far as I know is Simeon (Jakovlevič), 96. Then there's Archbishop Demetrios of America, 94, a major name. Two from 1929, Ukraine's Filaret and Albania's Anastasios, both who survived the covid purge of late 2020. None from 1930 as far as I know, 1931 has John Zizioulas and 1932 Herman (Swaiko) who retired in 2008, only 6 nonagenarians in total. 1933 has the walking corpse that is Ilia II of Georgia, 1934 as far as I know only has Kallistos, 1935 only has a couple of relatively minor names.
