7 pointsFederico Martín Bahamontes has died at the age of 95: https://elpais.com/deportes/2023-08-08/muere-federico-martin-bahamontes-el-primer-espanol-en-ganar-el-tour-de-francia.html DDP Pick.

6 pointsNew Jersey media outlet Thirteen PBS seem to have jumped the gun earlier today and accidentally announced DJ Casper had died. As many of you know, he's long been a popular pick on DL across various pools after being diagnosed with both kidney and neuroendocrine cancers in 2016. In 2018, he announced that he had been spared by the mercy of God and that he was a changed man etc. etc. but apparently not... A quick look on Facebook reveals several posts from family and friends, requesting prayers, claiming he's "gravely ill" and in his last days. Here, here, and here. If true, a sad DDP miss as he isn't picked. I believe I'm right in saying last picked in 2020? No doubt someone will moan but I think he's big enough to merit his own thread. Plus 1) he doesn't really fit nicely into any others and 2) I never create any bloody threads round here so lay off the hate

2 pointsOlivia Newton-John died on this day a year ago, aged 73. - Newton-John was the granddaughter of Nobel-winning physicist Max Born, and was also a distant descendant of Martin Luther. - When Newton-John was 14, she formed her first band with three of her female classmates. It was named "Sol Four", which often performed at her brother-in-law's café. - Newton-John's first album, If Not for You, was released in 1971. She rose to fame in 1973 after the release of her song "Let Me Be There", and represented the UK in Eurovision 1974: - Newton-John's first US No. 1 was "I Honestly Love You", in 1974. Her second one, "Physical", topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 10 weeks during 1981 and 1982, and was the song of the year for the latter. - Newton-John's acting career was best known for her roles as Sandy in Grease and Terpsichore/Kira in Xanadu (the latter pictured above), and her songs from those movies also became chart-toppers around the world. (I'll also mention that Xanadu was one of my mom's favorite movies when she was growing up.) - In 1992, Newton-John was diagnosed with breast cancer, and she became an advocate for researching the disease. She survived her initial diagnosis, but it returned in 2013- she also beat it then. In 2017, it recurred for the second time, but metastasized to her bones; this led to her debut (and only appearance) on the DeathList in 2018. She died after a five-year battle.
