11 pointsWith his death, Swedish Kurt Hamrin is the last living 1958 finalist, and Brazilian Amarildo and Czech Josef Jelinek are the last living 1962 finalists. Zagallo was the longest lived WC winning manager. He was the last 1970 and 1974 surviving manager. He was the earliest surviving WC winning manager, outliving 2 of his successors, Helmut Schon and Enzo Bearzot. Now the earliest surviving WC winning manager is Cesar Luis Menotti.

11 pointsI do now. Two teams have Soul. BTW, 220 teams have Carter. Potentially more if any teams fell down sofa. Most since Zsa Zsa in 2014. Glynis and Draper are Drop 40. Putin, Kate Keltie, and Rhod Gilbert won't be. Nor Randy Jackson, who is on fewer teams than Scott Thorson. Should be enough to whet y'alls appetite till we're properly up.

6 pointsMy congratulations to the Inverse Dead Pool 2023 champion – and the new all-time lowest-scoring player – @tracy! You are now at least 25% of the way to achieving your coveted EGOI (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Inverse). THE WINNING TEAM: Honourable mention also to runner-up @LizLemon for achieving the second best score in Inverse Dead Pool history – and for only being 4 days off tying for the lead after Glynis Johns' death. (Which would have remained a @tracy win under current tie-break rules, but still...) FINAL LEADERBOARD: 1. tracy 1 2. LizLemon 3 3. diego 12 3. Perhaps 12 5. gcreptile 13 6. Grimgrass 14 7. 4 pointsTheodore Roosevelt died on this day 105 years ago, aged 60. - When he was 7 years old, Roosevelt became interested in zoology when he saw a dead seal that was planned to be butchered at a local market- the butcher gave him the seal's skull. From there, Roosevelt would learn taxidermy and made a makeshift museum in his parent's house. - Roosevelt's mother (Martha) and first wife (Alice) died on the same day: February 12, 1884. He gave custody of his daughter Alice to his sister Anna while he grieved, and took her back once she was three years old. - During his presidency, Roosevelt owned many exotic pets- these included a bear, a hyena, and a lion. - In 1912 Roosevelt attempted to run for president after his first presidency had ended- this split the Republican ticket, leading to a landslide victory for Woodrow Wilson. He was notably shot in the chest during one of his speeches, but continued for the next 90 minutes before allowing himself to receive medical aid. - Roosevelt was also known for his post-presidential expeditions- these included an African safari to hunt specimens for the American Museum of Natural History, and going to Brazil to explore the "River of Doubt" deep in the Amazon (where he nearly died from malaria)- the river has since been renamed "Rio Roosevelt". - Roosevelt died in his sleep from a detached blood clot that got stuck in his lungs. His Vice President, Thomas Marshall, stated "Death had to take Roosevelt sleeping, for if he had been awake, there would have been a fight."

3 pointsAs pointed out in another thread (altough I found a better source), Michael Bolton apparently had a brain tumor. This may explain his strange behavior during the filming I saw at Magic Kingdom back in November, and may explain quite a bit of the other reactions we've seen from people about him in the past few months...

3 pointsIf you are a license fee payer go to BBC iPlayer and watch BBC News at One from today and go to about 9 and a half minutes in and just watch, he was a part of founding 'New Labour' and was involved in two lobbying scandals before catching COVID. Here's a link to make it even easier for you.

3 pointsYeah but Coleen Rooney would be a deathlisty name if she was ill I would say as she is known in her own right through extension of the profile her marriage . Similarly Sharon Osbourne would be a famous enough name for the Death List but wouldn't be if she had never married Ozzy. None of the first ladies of the US on the list over the years would have been famous if it was not for their marriages and if Prince Philip had never married the Queen he would have just been an obscure foreign Royal and if it wasn't for his daughters social media skills we would never have known who Tom Moore was. Draper was an influential lobbyist who was a key part of the New Labour movement and had a number of notable scandals.Just because his wife kept his plight in the spotlight is irrelevant he is still more famous in his own right than say Bill Gates Dad or Elizabeth Edwards and most political and royal spouses. I didn't even pick him for my shadowlist as I partly overlooked him but also when his name came into my head I queried whether he was deathlisty enough but there was merit to his inclusion. His obituaries cover all the things he did behind the scenes for the Labour party. He was famous for reasons other than his impending demise and was always going to get obituaries from every major paper and news station.Which by the committees own definitions is enough. Never known so much anger over the committee being bold rather than just stuffing the list with seemingly healthy A list nonogenarians as they have been criticised for in the past. The committee have had 2 hits in 2 days I say good calls. The Deathlist has never looked stronger this early in the year since I followed it.

2 pointsLet's wrap this up, shall we? We've had a couple of late year hits, and yes, they actually decided the game. Let's start with Norman Lear. The groundbreaking TV showrunner was a hit for 5 players. Ryan Minor was a hit for quite a few people, some of them making use of the 5 substitution slots for him. Maybe a minor hit, minor difference, etc.... but that's the one that counted, in the end. Richard Franklin, as noted above, was a hit for Perhaps and Bibliogryphon. One of the hundreds of British names that seem very quite significant, but not having grown up with the BBC, does put me at a disadvantage remembering these actors. Jacques Delors, Mr. Euro, was another popular hit and gives some late points across the board. Robert Solow, a significant economist, not just signficant in the science, but also popular with deadpoolers finally died at 99. Diego and Mr. Wonderful score. Ryan Minor was not the only hit named Ryan in this update, as Ryan O'Neal also died in the final month. He should have asked his doc what's up a little more often - though actually, his age of 82 is not particularly low, considering the drug use.. Cale Yarborough was the final hit of the game, a hit on the final day. He was quite the popular mid-year substitution and actually would have decided the game, if it wasn't for Ryan Minor. EDIT: As seen below, yes, there was also Beach Boys collaborator and guitarist Jeffrey Foskett. He had been ill and with gofundme for years. The patience for two players, msc and JoeyRuss finally paid off. Slightly curiously, Gaston Glock was not a hit. And as far as I can tell, none of the non-obits got a late QO, Daniel N Paul, Steve Woodmore, Chris Stone or Oommen Chandy among them. So, unless I have made mistakes (it's likely), the final scoreboard is below. Banana wins with a small advantage over me. He actually needed Ryan Minor, or I would have won on the final day with Cale Yarborough. But then, it's also a title defense, very rare in this competitive environment. Well done, and congratulations! Behind the top duo, we see An Fear Beag, RadGuy, and Funeralopolis, sort of in the "needed two more hits" territory. Interestingly, both Funeralopolis and Rad Guy had more hits than the players above them. Funeralopolis wins "Most hits" with 23, RadGuy has 22. Banana has 19, I have 18. DIfferent strategies at work! In my opinion, maybe the biggest surprise, the "best improved" player might be Buffalo Phil at 12th. Well done, as well! We all still chase the score records of DevonDeathTrip's win a couple of years ago. But maybe there's a parallel to the DDP, more hits overall, but fewer "high scores". 61 players was a record. It's doubtful that this record can be reached soon again. We've had a reduction in 2024 by 8 teams. The 50+X field seems the "natural" size, considering 2022 had 44 teams. DeathByNumbers 2023 was even bigger than the AltObits pool, if I count it right, especially if you count "picks total", because AltObits is only 40 names per team, here we are 50 (+ 5).
