Borgudd got QO's from the Sun and The Star https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/f1/slim-borgudd-abba-f1-29303275.amp

There's definitely more widespread coverage for racing driver deaths, albeit the last four deaths all raced in the 1980s. The real test to QOs will be if one of the elder midfield or backmarker runners gets a QO when they go.

That said, Jabouille and Tambay were race winners and Borgudd had the ABBA link.

All motorcycle road racing in Northern Ireland has been cancelled this year due to significant increases in public liability insurance costs.

The same insurance company also covers the Isle of Man TT races - could they be in doubt as well?

All back on thanks to a new insurance quote and crowdfunding by fans. It was not just road racing that had been cancelled, it was ALL racing and trials.

So, it's crowdfunding going forward, then. Could get tricky if there's a massive incident and massive insurance pay-out.

No, that was just a stop-gap to get racing this year, they are already looking into things like making people pay to watch ect. Still no word on racing in the South as they were facing the same insurance problem.

NASCAR legend Cale Yarborough has not appeared at all in public since around 2018-2019 and considering he used to attend races and sign fan autographs regularly, this is not a good sign.

I think Kenneth McAlpine (101) may be the oldest surviving World Championship driver too (Indy 500 excepted - I haven't checked). He took part in the 1952 British and Italian Grands Prix. Hans Hermann (93) entered privately in 1953 at the German Grand Prix, but McAlpine entered 4 races that year, including in Germany. The only other driver to pre-date Tony Brooks (who debuted in 1956) is Hermano da Silva Ramos (95), who debuted in the Netherlands in 1955.

Death Notice for Kenneth McAlpine aged 102: http://announcements.telegraph.co.uk/deaths/263523/mcalpine

DDP pick.

Edit: Oops, I guess I should post the text for those who have an issue:

McALPINE

Kenneth OBE DL. Died peacefully during the night, on 8th April 2023, aged 102. Much loved husband of Patricia, father to Richard and James, and grandfather to Thomas, Melissa, Hamish and Sophia. The family would welcome donations to the Hospice in the Weald, Pembury (www.hospiceintheweald.org.uk).

Although this isn't surprising, it truly is the end of a particular era. I was reading a book about Stirling Moss recently, with one of his main rivals in a hill climb being McAlpine. This was from 1948, and I thought it incredible anyone racing  from 75 years ago was still alive.

RIP

Isn’t it Paul Goldsmith ?

Not operating from a motor-racing expert position but a "pub trivia" position, iirc the Indy 500 used to count for F1 points, but it's not a Grand Prix. Goldsmith competed in the Indy 500 when it was part of the F1 World Championship tour, but not in any other races so he was never a grand prix driver.

Thanks for the explanation. I always thought that only Grand Prix Races counted for F1 Championship.

Sir Jackie Stewart being interviewed at Aintree on ITV about his Dementia charity work (his wife suffers from it). Without wanting to jinx it he looks and sounds really well. Apparently ringing the bell for tomorrow's Grand National.

Jackie Stewart must be one of the last alive (and possibly the last) to have won a race on the Aintree Grand Prix circuit - having won the Formula 3 race there in 1964, the circuit's final year.

Yeah, Wikipedia says his mount was called Cooper T72 - also makes clear his former rival Warwick Banks (b. 1939) is still alive.

He handed out a trophy at the Australian Grand Prix last week, so still comfortable travelling long distances around the world too.

He was actually talking about this on the racing coverage today, where the picture is from. Explaining where the circuit used to go and his experiences of winning there. Think he stated that he believed he was the only person still alive to have won on the Grand Prix circuit.
