themaninblack 2,112 Posted May 15, 2013 Right, there will be no more emails except for the yearly reminder of the new competition, that is if I can be fucking bothered to do this shit as life's too fucking short. If you want to see who's dead, go to the fucking website... Take a chillpill and relax. Just BCC next time and the show can continue. These emails are informative and I like them. Keep them going! Perhaps I will, as I have done for the other 101 times and 612 deaths...
msc 18,476 Posted May 15, 2013 Ach, accidents happen. TMIB apologised. So it goes. I can understand why folk would be upset their emails were published en masse - all too well, in fact - but it can happen all too easily by accident (especially by tired editors pressing the wrong button at 4am, from experience!). It happens. Anyhow, deep breathes and all that. (Not a forum nice person.)
Lard Bazaar 3,799 Posted May 15, 2013 I could be being incredibly naive here, but can someone really access your Paypal or bank account if all they have is your email address? Surely they also need at the very least your email password? And then the answers to your bank security questions? Or am I being properly daft? Genuine question, because if that's the case I need to re-think joining all those free porn websites......

Magere Hein 1,400 Posted May 15, 2013 Can one of the forum's "nice guys" step in here and say "hey, everyone, take a few deep breaths and calm down". I'd do it but I don't want to blow my hardman rep. DL Duty nice guy reporting! Hey, everyone, take a few deep breaths and calm down. I'm not thrilled that 218 recipients can now know my email address. Still: what damage is done, exactly? My email address may or may not contain information about my Real Identity. If it does, the fault is mine, I should have created a dummy email just for DDP purposes. Mistakes happen. It's not as if my email address was posted on the web, and so released into the spamosphere. As the Dutch joke goes: Q: Why don´t Belgians make mistakes? A: Because to err is human. regards, Hein
Death Impends 7,979 Posted May 15, 2013 I too have no real anger. Yes, it's a nuisance, and I can understand others being rightfully peeved, but ultimately the only thing leaked were email addresses. Like Bazaar said it's not like an email alone can be abused by other people when they don't know any other data relating to it. Spam is really the worst that can happen, but spam is little more than a nuisance. If the emails were revealed intentionally, then yes I'd be truly peeved, but you didn't intend for it and as we all make mistakes there's no point in being angry when you can simply remember to check for BCC next time. You've overall done a stellar job running the DDP and I don't think that should be forgotten.
Bibliogryphon 9,586 Posted May 16, 2013 As e-mail mistakes go this is pretty mild. Once one of my colleagues made the mistake of responding to the original message rather than the fowarded message and send one of our most important customers an message saying the were a stupid f****** c*** who didn't understand what they were asking for. Suffice to say he is no longer a colleague. TMIB you are doing a sterling job which we should all remember.
Going Underground 74 Posted May 16, 2013 TMIB you are doing a sterling job which we should all remember. Agreed I personally don't give a fiddlers if I receive a few extra penis enlargement emails or yet more offers of millions of dollars tied up in a Nigerian bank account. I take it the 'Angry from (insert town)' will be withdrawing from DDP?. ah well...bye
Spade_Cooley 9,536 Posted May 16, 2013 The main thing I took from the leak is that apparently there's still lots of people out there using Hotmail.
msc 18,476 Posted May 16, 2013 The main thing I took from the leak is that apparently there's still lots of people out there using Hotmail. They can be useful, as a place to put all the spam away from the personal email, I find.
the_engineer 1,415 Posted May 16, 2013 Mistakes happen. How about we all agree to just delete that email . Also i think this might be something that has happened with outlook because i received a similar message from a friend with all her contacts on aswell. Lady Grendel 139 Posted May 17, 2013 Oh dear, once again I managed to post and annoy everyone. I have a short fuse and am quick to anger, I just see red and react, think later, I hadn't had a good day and sleep was very difficult. I have to say I rethought my post when I calmed down but by that time I had no internet access and was stuck in Hawick - centre of the Universe, according to the inhabitants 'a day out of Hawick is a day wasted' - so this is my first chance to be on here. Firstly, yes I know BCC is open to mistakes, I have been there myself, secondly yes you can be traced from email, you can be traced from a mobile phone number too, a good hacker can find out anything if you have filled in a form giving even the minimum amount of details. Passwords can be hacked too if someone knows what they are doing. There are programmes that can send a virus to your computer so that they can view what you type, I think it is called keylogging. Simply signing into your bank with your security code sends them the key. One of my friends had a few purchases made in her name on Paypal last year, she was refunded eventually, but it was reckoned she had picked up a virus that keylogged her and she had Norton Antivirus running. I agree with TMIB just not sending out emails, it's a hard enough job keeping the DDP running and why are emails necessary when we can all view the website for the updates? Surely it would make his life much easier if he just had to concentrate on the the continual updates of the website?
charon 4,943 Posted May 18, 2013 Tsk. In the last few years I have used a keylogger and their great. Screenshots every x secs if required as well. Plus its easy to rap it to a mobile too. Also cracked people traces etc.....etc....etc.... Realisation ? Don't be bad. And on my own computers I use zero, nada anti virus. Why bother ?........... Just don't be a tit and give out anything . Bibliogryphon 9,586 Posted May 31, 2013 Second hit for my theme team with Jack Vance but I had provisionly planned to drop both Jack and Ruth from my 2014 team so if this is going to work then Brian Aldiss, Barbara Taylor-Bradford and Sue Townsend should be worried.
