Our dog died recently, my wife was really upset. So to cheer her up, I bought her an identical dog. She was absolutely livid about that. "What am I supposed to do with 2 dead dogs"? she yelled.

It's a CBE not a knighhood. He never was a Sir Why did everyone refer to him as Sir Rolf Harris then? Who is this "everyone"? I've never seen him once referred to as being "Sir Rolf Harris" except in a question that someone posed on answers.com where someone asked if Harris had been knighted.

It's a CBE not a knighhood. He never was a Sir Why did everyone refer to him as Sir Rolf Harris then? Not everyone did, the ones that did are thick bloody idiots. Does it say in the article Sir Rolf Harris?

It's a CBE not a knighhood. He never was a Sir It even says in the link for the news article "Rolf Harris stripped of his CBE" "The Queen has directed that the appointment of Rolf Harris to be a Commander of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, dated 17 June 2006, shall be cancelled and annulled and that his name shall be erased from the Register of the said Order." I guess there's one consolation in that he's still on one register.

Right now, there are lots of articles about how "one could have/should have known" and how it was all there to see. It's sort of proven that there was doping in 1954. There are also hints that it happened in 1966. I just read that in 1986, as testified by goalkeeper Toni Schuhmacher in his autobiography, there most likely was doping going on. The current scandal is mainly about doping in the Bundesliga, especially at Freiburg and VfB Stuttgart. A player who played at both clubs in exactly the interesting period is current national coach Jogi Löw. The national coach in 1986 was Franz Beckenbauer. Also implicated in the scandal are interesting figures like Ottmar Hitzfeld (winner of the Champions League with Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund) or Paul Breitner (long-time regular of Bayern Munich).

let me guess, you've not heard of them so they're "dull suggestions" Actually the funny thing is, I can admit I got mildly carried away by bashing some people mentioned here because I forgot this is for just general suggestions, not suggestions for the front page of DL. And yes actually I did know he was the director of some old Bond movie..... But that doesn't stop it being dull, and actually I don't think he's at all guaranteed to get a qualifying obit for the DDP either. Why should I have heard of him? I can remember tons of movie "facts", but remembering which generic nobody directed which old Bond film is a pursuit probably too lame even for people who think Richard Osman appearing on Football Focus to give his tips for the weekend's fixtures is a "telly highlight of the year". And anybody could have directed Alfie too, movies like that aren't about the director......... Ok let's get one thing fucking clear. Just because it's dull to you, doesn't mean it's not interesting to someone else.

I have some "regrets" about picking the wrong people out of very narrow categories. For my DDP, I picked Walter Scheel, a very old former German president, only to find out that another, less old former German president (Richard von Weizsäcker) died. For the Hare's Death Pool, I picked Alexej Nawalny because I thought that Putin might attempt to kill a prominent member of the opposition, but then a different guy died. Also, at the beginning of the year, two german football world championship winners of 1954 were still alive, I picked Horst Eckel, but then the other guy died. And finally, I chose cancer-stricken former drummer of the german punk band "Die Toten Hosen" Wolfgang Rohde, but then the band's manager Jochen Hülder died.

Oh, so does that mean I can't list Hayley Mills, Suzi Quatro and Debbie Harry as my ex-girlfriends? I'll never forget the words Suzi said to me on the phone the last time I spoke to her. Which was "Who are you"? and "How did you get my number"?

Unfortunately The Prisoner was never broadcast on Dutch TV. I know it has legendary status. I'll see if utube have it.

What about film director Lewis Gilbert (James Bond, Alfie,...) ? for my opinion he would be a good choice for DL 2016.

I think one notable casualty of the coming election will be The Sun newspaper's consistent boast that it is them "what won it." They've been able to lord it over the opposition in these terms since - apparently - swaying the 1992 vote with their "last person in Britain please turn out the lights" front page expressing horror at the thought of Neil Kinnock in Downing Street. Today there's a corker of a front page about Ed Milliband being the fourth most powerful person in Doncaster. But as the polls continue to predict near deadlock with the - likely - scenario that only the SNP amongst the minor parties will pack enough votes to be a meaningful partner in government, The Sun will never be able to bring itself to suggest that is the outcome it wanted. So: Still think Lab/SNP agreement (not coalition) with some far reaching bills dragged forward quickly demanding transparency in political funding (i.e. wealthy tax exile Tory donors legally move to the UK and pay tax or get barred), also maybe capping of election expenditure and transparency in that area too (so Tories can't outspend Labour 5 to 1 or whatever it is this year). No EU in/out vote and some major devo-max legislation. After which their agreement looks shaky and we might be voting again in October (though the internal war that will follow the Conservative loss might well reshape them under a new leader). Could Boris go from new MP to Prime Minister in five months?

Yes, you can. I can formally answer that your request is denied for historical reasons. This thread started life as a Doctor Who thread, but at some time it was merged with another 'UK scifi other than Doctor Who' topic.

Damn, cause I thought for a minute I'd been on the same forum as a guest who went out with somebody so famous I'd nearly heard of them. I'm crushed now.

Mr. DL: Hey! You see, I have this idea for a new reality show called "Die Zsa Zsa". It's gonna be a real success, I tell ya! Television producer: Oh, I don't know. The title sounds kind of suspicious... Mr. DL: Don't worry, it's the....uhmm...the German "die". I have no bad intentions whatsoever, I swear...heh...

"He was never as sick as ... he said he was"? Yes and no. He had stage IV cancer, but it wasn't pancreatic adenocarcinoma, the usual, deadly type that kills people within a year. Instead, he had neuroendocrine pancreatic cancer, a rare and less aggressive variant but it still spread over multiple organs like Phantom said, so it qualified as stage IV (since stage IV means one has distant metastases). If you just look at the relevant statistics at the website of the American Cancer Society, you can see that even stage IV neuroendocrine tumours might sometimes be treated with surgery, and then 16% of these patients live for at least 5 years. It doesn't mean he is guaranteed to be cured forever though, as even poor old Steve Jobs died many years after his initial diagnosis. Luckily though, he doesn't have many organs left to which the cancer could spread.(Which makes me ask how he can be fed [intravenously? orally with a special diet?], but hey, at least he's alive.) Adept and intelliigent posting sir (or madam), live long and prosper among us, or summat.

SC, do you actually know what you're talking about or are you just being a total cunt for the sake of it? Wilko had his pancreas and spleen removed along with part of his stomach, large and small intestines. And his tongue! Dont forget his tongue! ........ oh wait, that was just in Game Of Thrones. Carry on.

Stephen Fry. Because I outright admire the man and his honesty. Even though he isn't ill per-se, his bi-polar has driven him close before now. So no, no relation, but wouldn't pick him even if he did become ill. I can never keep track of the threads around here, but if there isn't one for this Deathray, it's a good candidate for its own place imo. Some conversation to be had there methinks.
