As @paddyfool has said he won't run this again, I think it behoves me as Champ 2019 to carry a legacy game. I will not enter a team. Looking at this year's Deathlist, please try to predict exactly which out of its fifty entries will prove a hit this year by submitting a list of names from the Deathlist 50 whom you actually predict to die. Points will be allocated as follows: +1 per death correctly predicted -1 per death incorrectly predicted +4 if the number of deaths you predict matches the actual number of deaths EDIT for clarity: by which I mean the number of names in your list matches the actual number of deaths +2 if you only miss the correct total number of deaths by 1 -2 if you miss the total number of deaths by more than 5 +1 bonus for a "unique" correct prediction (predicted by no other punter here) +1 bonus if you pick the bookie's favourite (single most popular guess in this contest) and they are a hit. -1 penalty if you pick the bookie's favourite and they are a miss. A further +1 bonus for every 3rd correctly predicted death (+1 on 3rd, 6th, 9th etc) You may if you wish select one entry as a joker, for whom all rewards, bonuses, and/or penalties will be doubled. In the event of a tie on points, the dead-lock (see what I did there) will be broken by the following: 1) Whichever team had the most hits 2) If unbroken by 1, whichever team was closest in their guess of predicted deaths for the year 3) If unbroken by 1 and 2, whichever team was submitted first. Entries in by Jan 9th, please, either by pm or by posting here. Any deaths before then will still score for any lists entered at least 24 hours before the death and will still count towards the total deaths for the year. Good luck.

Thanks all. With winning the DDP the white whale of my deadpooling career, it is very satisfying and relieving to have finally achieved it. I very much felt like Bert Trautmann in 2017 throughout the year, in that this would be the now or never year for me to win the DDP. It was all very fluid throughout most of the year and I did not feel confident in winning until the deaths of Fernando Ricksen and Suzanne Whang. Even after that, the death of Jimmy Spicer gave me a sinking feeling (that turned out to be for naught) and I certainly sweated at the deaths of Vervoort, Baghdadi, and Frates. The last few months were a crazy rollercoaster of a scoreboard, and it was very fortunate that my lead was sturdy enough that I stayed in first while the rest of the top 20's arrangement kept getting scrambled. These last few months showed that while Whang and Legh were the most obvious components of the win, the more commonplace names on my team (Bracknell, Conway, and James were the last three in) were just as crucial. Once again referencing Bert, I did briefly mull whether or not to go out on top and retire TJS from the DDP. With life getting busier, I definitely am not going to have the time for research I used to. But of course I remain active in the community (so even if I end up having very little research time I can still cobble decent teams out of forum names) and I want to continue my hit history (I could hit the century this year should I get at least 13 hits with my current team). And as I alluded to in other posts, I only wanted one win, and so I welcome the new freedom victory gives me, to pick Jimmy Carter instead of the more coldly logical fringey name. My thanks to the 14 fatalities, who all seemed like good folk undeserving of their maladies, but whose contributions to the effort and interesting lives of wine expertise, disaster awareness, and singing bizarre I Will Survive parodies to your tumors shant be forgotten. And of course, thanks to Spade for his hard work running the DDP and holding the fort as we head into the well overdue committee era.

I would like to thank msc for hosting the cup the past few years, he really did an excellent job. However, as he is now cohosting the DDP the task lies on someone else to host, and that's where I step in. Hopefully a long term host will be done in 2021, but for now, you're stuck with me. We're back in February, so, if the first round draw happens on the 20th January, this gives everyone 18 days to decide if they want to enter the Cup or not, and there's already several confirmations. In 2017, deadsox beat Spade, he beat DDT and he beat Death Impends to win the first ever Deathlist Cup. In 2018, Sir Creep got to the final in swashbuckling form, only to find wily old DDT too much. And in 2019, Spade Cooley proved why he is one of the GOATs, dominating every single match he was in like it was nothing. Bou made a nice run in the cup too. Will Spade go two for two, or will another deadpool heavyweights fight back? Or will anyone win? Quim Reaper got to the Quarterfinals last year despite not really being a favorite to win by anybody - outlasted one DDP winner in the process. It's a Cup, skill is good but so is luck. Come one, come all, and look at the new rules... Some Basic Rules which I've tried to explain as simply as possible, but which are open for questions about how obvious things I've forgotten work. The Deathlist Cup 1. This will be a knockout tournament featuring one on one matchups between Deathlist forum posters. These matches will be determined by use of a random draw, using Random.org. 2. If we have an odd number of players ie 30 like in 2017, then certain players will get byes to the Second Round. This will be based on results from the 2019 Cup ie Winner first, then Runner up, semifinalists, etc etc. 3. Players, on receiving their randomly drawn opponent, will have a ten day period to send the Referee their First Eleven for the match by PM, and one sub in case of an early death. These eleven picks can be very low hanging fruit if you so wish, as the point of the game is to score as many “goals” during the month a match is played. ie, a perfect team would look like this 1. Alan Alda (joker) 2. Jeb Bush 3. George Bush Jr 4. Bill Clinton 5. Hilary Clinton 6. Barack Obama 7. Jimmy Carter 8. Walter Mondale 9. John Major 10. Tony Blair 11. Donald Trump subs 12. Melania Trump 13. Dick Cheney 14. Sarah Palin As an example. Though in reality, that team would be shit for actually scoring points... 4. PROHIBITIONS – The following picks will be PROHIBITED ie NOT ALLOWED: death row prisoners, anyone who is a prisoner of ISIS or similar terrorist groups, people solely famous for being ill and nothing else, animals, no kids (that’s anyone under the age of 18), no one missing in action who blatantly died already. 5. For clarification, my views on Famous for Being Ill are extremely lenient by forum standards. Is your pick an obscure in their own field type, like a historian from Trinidad? They’re fine. Is your pick someone who is in coma due to a heart attack, or a dad on his last Christmas, or the like, the type no one would have heard of for anything? Don’t pick them, there’s PLENTY of other better options. There’s enough Kate Bowler (published academic, cancer) types in the world that you don’t need Kate Cancer Mum of the Mirror Sob Story. Thank you. My standards may be a little different from msc, but I will try to keep it as fair as possible. Don't expect the Laura Nutall's of the world to be accepted 6. If in doubt, submit a pick, but the decision of the ref (me) is final and is not open to any court of appeal. If you think it’s a dodgy pick, it probably is. If you think the ref is a grumpy teenager, well, he is. 7. Each match will take place over the course of a single month. For example, a February match would take place from February 1st to February 28th (or 29th on a leap year, such as this year), a March match from March 1st to March 31st and so on... 8. Games will be scored in the following manner: A person in your team dies = 3 points A unique person in your team dies = 1 more point (ie 1 bonus point) Fatality – Your joker. Double points Someone famous only for being ill dies – 0 points because not in the team (hah, bet you thought I wasn’t paying attention here) 9. Here is what happens in the case of a team member dying prematurely (ie on 28th Feb for the March game). If you discover this before the 3rd of the month, your top sub will automatically go into place. If it is discovered on the 3rd or after, sorry about your luck. If it turns out the person was dead and known to be (this is determined via a reference in a newspaper or magazine, not social media) then subs don’t come into play. This was a bone of contention in 2017, 2018, AND 2019 and I hope this clears that up. If it bloody well doesn’t I’m instituting a Hewlett Rule in 2021! 10. At the end of the month, the player in the match with the highest score wins that game, and will advance to the next round. The player who doesn’t have the highest score will lose, and be eliminated. 11. In the event of a draw, the following tiebreaks will be used: 1st tiebreak = number of hits 2nd tiebreak = average age of hits 3rd tiebreak = flip of a coin 4th tiebreak if needed = A little game of eenie meenie miny mo (hehe) 12. A player is only held to one team for a single match. If they win their match and advance to the next round, they may pick eleven entirely different people for the next round. In this way, folk who announce their terminal illness in, say, May, can be put to good dead pooling use. 13. Qualifying obits? Every single English language newspaper or magazine (ie Bleeding Cool for example) in the universe. Also Le Monde, Le Figaro, Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, El Pais and El Mundo. If you still can’t get a QO, well, really… The referee (Joey Russ) may make a judgement call based on what he is provided with, and that call will be final. Forum posts on Deathlist, and your own blog don't count, sorry. 14. For the removal of any doubt, any players who do not send in their team before the deadline will be DQ'd and replaced by the highest scoring loser. No matter how many sad PMs you send afterwards. Apologies aren’t allowed either Example Death Impends, Joey Russ, YoungWillz and msc hypothetically take part. Random.org gives us these matches: 1. Death Impends v Joey Russ (feck) 2. YoungWillz v msc This draw takes place in Month 1 (ie January) and is for matches taking place in Month 2 (February). After the draw, each player sends The Referee (ie Joey Russ) a team of Eleven Celebrities they think will snuff it in Month 2. Then, for the results: msc scores in Month 2 with a big name celebrity and a unique but obscure punk music historian. Young Willz gets a unique big name celebrity. The score is 7-4 to msc, who advances to the next round. Good luck!

Valerie Harper is showing as my 24th entry on the masterlist, not struck out, and not on the quoted update. Am I due the 241 points others received for Valerie Harper (d. 30 Aug 2019)? The corrected score would have me at 10/25 for Hare's Death Pool 2019. Congratulations to John Key.

I reckon Prince Phillip will survive this year, although hes on my shadowlist as number 3. I think Kirk Douglas will go this year though. Call it an unpopular opinion but I think he should've stayed at #1 this year. Prince Phillip walked to his car when he left the hospital, must mean the blood transfusions/satanic rituals/whatever tf is keeping him alive must be working.

Ok then folkes and folkettes off we go to the races. Subject to late obits up until 7th January and inevitable errors on my part. The provisional scoreboard.... And to think I had to remind John Key to enter 2020 or else we wouldn't have had a team from our defending champion for 2020...... A massive applause to him for not only breaking Grim Up North's record - held since 2017, but breaking it so comfortably he beat the_engineer who also beat it more marginal. Meanwhile Bibliogryphon breathes a sigh of relief as mysteriousmummy breaks records at the other end of the table in becoming the first Hare's Death Pool player history to not get a single point in the entire 365 days of competition. John Key, the engineer, CaptainChorizo, FixedBusiness, The Unknown Man and An Fear Beag can all win with a single 31st December hit. Grim Up North, The Mad Hatter and ebless can all win if their wildcard dies. Obviously multiple late deaths is an open possibility that could allow even in the mysteriousmummy to still win (she'd need 5 31st December deaths though.... not impossible, but impropable) A Podium Finish...... Trump wont lose this one. Maybe if they had someone good running against him. My favourite is Tulsi but shes no where near Biden and Warren in the polls. I swear if the DNC put either Biden or Warren up for the nomination then Trump has his second term in the bag.

Daniel arap Moi, Leon Spinks, P-Orridge, Delors, Willie Nelson, Bouteflika, Imelda Marcos, RBG, Woodward, Crosby, Musharraf , Le Pen, Reiner, Tom Smith, Terry Jones are all welcomed new entries/returning names. Shane McGowan should have been easily dropped. Bill Gates Sr. is a Fringe of Fame pick, I'd rather have liked Peter Tobin instead of Sutcliffe, it is probably too early for Akihito, Lansbury, Greenspan (Why returning, the fucker?), Tony Bennett (he is still too unsinkable), Scales, Edrich (a normal 83 year old with no current issues...maybe), Piggott (this sucks), Cheney and Attenborough. Overall I pretty liked the list.

A bit of a rundown name by name then: Prince Philip - might be a bit of an unpopular opinion, but was tired of Kirk Douglas at the top spot. So a bit refreshing to see a change. Healthwise, he certainly seems to be declining even if survived his most recent hospitalization. Think he can be a hit here Kirk Douglas - Just seems to be old at this point? Have no idea when he'll go, wouldn't shock either way at this point Olivia de Havilland - similar situation to Kirk, except she seems to be a bit healthier. Vera Lynn - Apparently she has gotten frailer, so might be a good call to become a hit Daniel arap Moi - Am kind of surprised he made it on the list (especially this high up), but certainly a welcome addition. Definitely a good bet to become a hit Dick van Dyke - tbh, I can see why they would keep him on the list, but at number 6? That seems to be a bit of a stretch Javier Perez de Cuellar - well, he's turning 100 and is as dull as ever Emperor Akihito - Not sure why he was carried over the likes of Gorby, Little Richard, King, etc. He just seems fairly stable after his abdication tbh Pierre Cardin - dull name, and doesn't even have the potential to make him more fun that JPDC did. Bob Dole - a how the fuck he's still alive name. Seriously, he looks really frail, and should've been a hit by now Murray Walker - another in the oldie department, but it seems like they have their fans Leon Spinks - could go either way, at the end of the day it's still prostate cancer which is generally slower moving. Though tbf, he has had his fair share of health issues in the past Betty White - she looks better. But again, I understand why they'd keep her on Angela Lansbury - now here's an oldie brought on after a long hiatus. Still kind of active, but I still think she's a good name Bob Barker - he has his health issues, but you don't know when it's finish him Alan Greenspan - eh, I actually kind of like him being on. Not exactly the kind of name you'd be sad about when they die, so there's that Henry Kissinger - 97 and obese. How the fuck did he make it this far? Jimmy Carter - He's finally showing his mortal side of these with the recent hospitalizations. Maybe he'll see another year, but is more likely to die sooner Valery Giscard d'Estaing - typical dull committee name gotta be a typical dull committee name Honor Blackman - She seems to be Zsa Zsa's successor minus health problems. Which is fine tbh, those types of names should exist Leslie Phillips - good to see him back. Really a how the fuck their still alive name Tony Bennett - Honestly not the worst pick out there. Sure, he's not great, but I don't think he's bad either Harry Belafonte - I like this name being on the list. It's a good name to have Nobby Stiles - Amazingly he's still alive. Which was weird because I thought he was dying in 2018, yet here we are 2 years later Hosni Mubarak - I guess the committee just like certain names. Felt like he could've been dropped despite the committee desire to keep picking him Genesis P-Orridge - obvious dead cert. Probably gone in the next few months. And it's the type of cult name they have gone for in the past. Excellent Stirling Moss - apparently he's still in poor health. He did make his 90th birthday despite a respected member feeling otherwise. Surely his time is soon, right? Prunella Scales - seems to be doing less appearances. Don't think it's quite her time yet, but her death wouldn't shock Desmond Tutu - I don't know when his health problems will finally get him, but I think it might be a good idea to keep around Jacques Delors - typical committee name. But they like these types of names Willie Nelson - excellent name. He seemed to be struggling to breathe at that performance last November, and I felt like it was their last chance to have him on. Fortunately he's on Jerry Stiller - eh, another name that's just kind of there, and wouldn't shock me either way John Edrich - Okay, how the fuck did he get on over Nicholas Parsons? Sometimes I just don't understand the committee... Abdelaziz Bouteflika - while some of the names brought back are questionable I think this one is a good call. Alex Trebek - household name with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Had to be Shane MacGowan - Okay, I'm not really sure why he got carried over. Sure, he has health problems, but then he also looked the best he has in years. So, I don't understand this carry over Dick Cheney - Wouldn't mind him being a hit, but I'm a bit skeptical on whether he actually goes or not. Ruth Bader Ginsburg - I'm not sure. I do think it's the right call that she's on the list, but don't know if she'll be a hit or not Imelda Marcos - of course. The biggest shoe in on the list. Honestly, don't think it's a bad call Carl Reiner - A bit surprised here, and he also seems to be active. But I guess it's not impossible Lester Piggott - another why is he back name? Although I guess the committee are fond of horse racing Joanne Woodward - Could become a hit this year, not a bad debut choice David Crosby - Had his fair share of health problems. When it'll happen I'm not sure, but certainly not a bad pick Tom Smith - I think he's a good pick. Those articles in late November sounded quite grim and apparently he slurred his words on television. Terry Jones - Sadly, I think 2020 is his year. Those end of the year articles made it seem like he's on his way out Jean Marie Le Pen - Another name where I'm not sure they'll die but is certainly not a name to be missed when he does go Pervez Musharraf - Some people seem to think there's an issue with this name. Well, he's currently in exile and has no planned date of execution. So, I don't know if he'll be a hit or not William H Gates - Yeah, pretty dull name. Could go but then he'll be another Kerkorian name David Attenborough - not sure he'll die, but I like him being on the list Peter Sutcliffe - obviously nobody would shed a tear if he dies. I'm skeptical that he goes, but if he does go, great call Overall, I think it'll be a great list. Even with some drops that shouldn't have happened

There's an overabundance of good names for this year imo. The Queen should keep a spot until her death.
