Patrick Moore was sometimes a figure of derision in UFO circles particularly decades ago when almost all the UFO literature tended to be pro-ET and he was held up as some kind of narrow-minded reactionary. Anyway, not long back I found his book Can You Speak Venusian? in a charity shop and I've just started reading it. 1976 edition and he visits and discusses all kinds of fringe groups and opinions with the kind of lively, open-minded and highly tolerant attitude that was absent from the very UFO literature that condemned him. Mind, in the opening section he has it in big-time for religious cults and others involved in brainwashing. Dated as hell but a lively read which I'm really enjoying.

Whilst I am very sorry for the millions of people who were fans of this chap and even more sorry for the man himself and his family, I, for one, have never heard of him, simply because I've never seen any of his films. I even saw his name come up on Wiki Recent Deaths, shrugged and then came here. It's only whilst here that I realise a bit more who he was and what he achieved. Seems like a real talent cut down in his prime.

This article by Jonathan Lis is the best political explanation of Boris Johnson ever. Very much worth a read.

Supposedly Rickman's pancreatic cancer was very sudden - he was still active a couple of months before he died. Not much point in telling people in that scenario. In many ways this is even sadder than Bowie and Rickman given his age. RIP

Super shocked and saddened by this one! Looks like he kept his cancer diagnosis private similar to David Bowie and Alan Rickman. Gonna miss him!

Normal for Islington. It’s a local greeting there. The right etiquette is to provide loud and excitable running commentary, like it’s the Grand National or the World Cup final. EDIT: ‘World Cup Semi’ would’ve worked better.
