There is no side to pick. She is 96 and has gradually become less active, her son and grandson have been taking on duties that she once did. This is a point of transition from Queen to King. She could abdicate and leave her family to figure it all out, pretty much as she had to when her father died, or help them settle into the roles they are going to be taking, sooner rather than later. She is putting things into place for when she is no longer here and, seriously, she doesn't have long now.

Yeah but you ever seen how many episodes of Star Trek there is? Millions! Everyone was in them. Hell, I'm sure even @Bibliogryphon had a 3 episode run in the mid 90s!

    1. As has been mentioned several times, regency is for mental incapacity, usually due to infancy or senility. The Queen is still on top of all her government briefing documents and continues to carry out both virtual and in person audiences with dignitaries from a variety of sectors. 2. As LFN stated, part of this is choreographed. The idea the monarchy "can't function without its lead actor" is precisely the issue. The lead actor is on the way out in the next few years. Seeing Charles take the lead in things like the laying of wreaths at the Cenotaph and, now, the Queen's Speech is simply ensuring that when the Queen passes, the jolt to public life will be (slightly) less sudden, as we are used to Charles performing these functions instead of the Queen.

Add other two: "Cambodian Ray Charles" Kong Nay, 78, hospitalised with diabetes complications and Javed Hashmi, 73, Pakistani politician, who is undergoing heart surgery. Both have a troubled health history.

Shel Silverstein died on this day 23 years ago, aged 68. Silverstein first illustrated for newspapers. In 1957, he became a cartoonist for Playboy, and became friends with its founder, Hugh Hefner. Silverstein soon began writing songs, including some for Johnny Cash. These included the novelty song "Boa Constrictor" (a song about the singer being swallowed by a snake, mentioning which body part the snake is up to- which would later appear as a poem in his poetry collection Where the Sidewalk Ends), and the much more well-known (and serious) "A Boy Named Sue": Silverstein is probably best known for his children's books, the most notable of which is 1964's The Giving Tree- a book about a tree giving its fruit, leaves, and wood away to a man over the span of many years. His poetry collections (particularly Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic) are also quite notable.

Jack Kehler was in Star Trek: DS9 - hey a Scavvy Hunt miss. Could equally have gone in the much underused Babylon 5 thread.

yep fair play but cant she announce a regency? Wait she keeps stating she won't as her "life is duty" and yet if its only mobility issues this is purely a pride issue? I know she's 96 and fair play but just announce the regency or abdication then. lets be honest the monarchy is purely a theatre show now. It can't function without its lead actor

Probably worth posting this in here: the PFA are asking footballers who believe they may be suffering from signs of dementia, whether diagnosed or undiagnosed, to come forward as they seek more information on the link between heading and dementia. Might see a few more names come forward from this. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/61376170

Got the BAFTA fellowship (their lifetime achievement award). Did a recorded bit to camera. Not at deaths door but his illness has progressed a fair bit in the last 2 years and there was a few moments where he was struggling for words.

I have had the dubious pleasure of watching the first "American Song Contest" Fifty states competing, which was introduced as, "the first in the WORLD to feature original songs!" Fuck. Off. America. Thirty minutes in, Amerivision gave a very brief mention of Eurovision Breathtaking audacity! Quite a few people would like a word, no? Weird glitch, but double Abba!
