I get why Dick Van Dyke shouldn’t be near the top but I’m against dropping him entirely, we have seen time and time again very healthy 90 year olds having a sudden down turn before reaching 100, and Van Dyke is already 97…

Yes, there was Charles Aznavour who was still touring at 94. He had a fall and broke his arm, but his death a few months later was unexpected.

At this point, the safest drops for 2023 should be Dick Van Dyke Alan Greenspan Dick Cheney Mel Brooks Sir Bobby Charlton David Attenborough Desmond Morris James Whale Jerry Lee Lewis Denis Law Noam Chomsky David Crosby Michael Gambon Silvio Berlusconi Linda Ronstadt Shane MacGowan I don’t think anyone could argue with any of those

And all except Deve Gowda have been hospitalised during recent months as far as I know. Sharad Pawar would've made a good fifth. Lalu Prasad Yadav was probably too young. There's going to be a lot of major and less major Indian political deaths in the next years. Nearly all of the many living CMs born 1935 or before seem to be in bad health or have been hospitalised recently (with the exception of SC Jamir, Shanta Kumar and DD Lapang who however looks like a living heart attack) and lots of the younger ones seem to be in very bad health (Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee should've logically died two years ago, Pinarayi Vijayan and Oommen Chandy reportedly both suffer from cancer, Amarinder Singh, Sharad Pawar, of course Mulayam and Lalu Prasad, Jitan Ram Manjhi, Harish Rawat and the zombielike Shibu Soren) and there are a ton of living elderly governors, other politicians.

So, that's the main supply line into Crimea looking a little worse for wear, then - I'm thinking the tension is fairly constant (well hidden by the tonnage of Botox in his face), but doubtless there are plotters somewhere in Russia, the social media of many Russians is taking in posts from the front line making it clear the dire state of the equipment is matched only by the idiocy of the commanders and the sanctions are biting as the winter takes hold. Other than tactical nukes which would exclude his country from the international community for a generation his options are fast draining away and all of the above is pretty much on him. Happy birthday Vlad! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-63183783

Franklin Pierce died on this day 153 years ago, aged 64. Pierce was the son of future New Hampshire governor Benjamin Pierce. The younger Pierce was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1828, and to the US House in 1832. Pierce would later be elected as a senator in 1836, resigning in 1842. Pierce would later serve in the Mexican-American War, and was notably injured when his horse fell into a ditch after being startled, falling on him. Pierce was nominated as a "dark horse" candidate when James C. Dobbin endorsed him during the 1852 Democratic National Convention, winning 254-42 in the electoral vote count. The 1852 election was the final election in which a Whig Party candidate would run. Despite being a northerner, Pierce was against the abolitionist movement, passing the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854 in which the newly-created Kansas and Nebraska Territories could decide whether slavery would be legal or not. This led to a period of violence within the territories, in which up to 200 were killed- now known as "Bleeding Kansas". This disenfranchised northern Democrats, and in 1856, they nominated James Buchanan for president instead of the incumbent Pierce. During his post-presidency, Pierce took a pacifist stance during the Civil War, but also criticized Abraham Lincoln for the suspension of habeas corpus. Pierce was an avid drinker and died of cirrhosis of the liver. During his college years, Pierce befriended The Scarlet Letter author Nathaniel Hawthorne, and was present when he died while they were visiting the White Mountains in New Hampshire in 1864.

On this day in 2008, British journalist and News Presenter Bob Friend died aged 70. He was one of the original news anchors on Sky News when it launched in 1989 but he began his career at the BBC as the Northern Ireland correspondent on the Today programme on Radio 4 during a particularly brutal era of sectarian violence. He spent 20 years at the BBC. Apparently Tom Cruise during a brief trip to London watched Sky News, spotted Bob and as a result decided his face fitted so to speak and as a result secured him a number of cameo roles in movies including Mission Impossible and Independence Day. Bob died of a brain tumour.

It does but Luise Eainer debuted back in 2014 days before turning 104.Spencer , Ferencz , Butler, Antony and Lear are all deathlisty names in my opinion based on previous inclusion criteria. All are guaranteed widespread UK media coverage when they die especially Ferencz and Spencer who I could see making news bulletins.Duffy I mused about as his parliamentary career was not overly notable however that combined with his role in NATO I would say pushes him over the notability criteria.
