Well, our previous host may have departed from his post, but this game, like the expression on Barry Manilow’s face, is going absolutely nowhere. Welcome to the fifth edition of Deathlist’s serene little therapy retreat, Kill or Save! So far, we’ve decided the best chart-topping songs of the 60s-90s, but now it’s time to go back and look at the hits which juuuust missed out on the top spot. Firstly, let’s give a hearty round of applause to Book. He created something brilliant but has decided to retire on a high, thus making him the polar opposite of Paul McCartney. It’s an honour to serve as his successor, and I shall try, unlike all the music we’ll be sorting through, not to be a load of number two. A quick reminder of how it works: - Each song starts with 20 points (whether it deserves it or not). - Once a day, you can award 4 points to and subtract 6 from (NOT the other way around, for fuck sake) any songs of your choosing in each round. You can split your daily +4 and -6 however you like, it’s down to you. - Make sure you copy and paste the most recent voter’s scoreboard when you take your turn to score. - Just to make it clear for everyone, please mark your scores after the song title and adjust the song’s points total as you go. (e.g.14 The Beatles -- Shite Song -6) - You can only vote once a day. To avoid any time zone confusion, please put a date at the top of your scoring post (e.g. “Sat 1 Jul”, “01-07-2023”, whatever, as long as it’s clear and doesn’t just say “today” or some shit.) Everyone makes mistakes sometimes, so I’d just like to shout out to all of our careful and attentive players who are shit hot on any potential errors that may arise. This here is serious business don’t you know, so thank you for keeping things in order. Fancy reliving all the action? See below for links to all Kill or Save games to date: 50s No.1s; 60s No.1s; 70s No.1s; 80s No.1s; 90s No.1s; 00s No.1s; 10s No.1s 50s No.2s; 60s No.2s; 70s No.2s (you are here); 80s No.2s; 90s No.2s; 00s No.2s; 10s No.2s 70s No.3s; 80s No.3s; 90s No.3s (IN PLAY!) Kirsty MacColl — Fairytale Of New York Queen — Bohemian Rhapsody / These Are The Days Of Our Lives See, below, the complete list of UK No.2 songs of the 70s: As ever, we will start with 5 group stages, beginning with the No.2 hits of 1970/71, followed by a grand final consisting of the 25 songs that have qualified, where we will ultimately decide what the undisputed best No.2 single of the 1970s is. Wow, what an honour. In this game, as the number of No.2 hits starting each round is fairly similar, I shall keep it simple and say that 5 songs in each round will qualify for the grand final. 1970/71: 30 songs 1972/73: 28 songs 1974/75: 34 songs 1976/77: 27 songs 1978/79: 25 songs So, without further ado… *dramatic look to camera like desperate gameshow host* …let’s Kill or Save.

Marlon Brando died on this day 19 years ago, aged 80. - Brando got his start on stage, and was known for a 1947 role in the Broadway production of A Streetcar Named Desire- he reprised his role as Stanley Kowalski in the 1951 film adaptation, earning him his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor. - He would eventually win two Oscars for Best Actor- one in 1955 for On the Waterfront, and another in 1973 for arguably his most famous role as Don Vito Corleone in The Godfather- he declined to accept the latter award. - Brando was childhood friends with fellow actor Wally Cox. When Cox died in 1973, Brando stole his ashes from his widow- she planned to sue him for their return, but she decided he needed them more. - Brando saw continued success in the late '70s, starring in movies such as Apocalypse Now and the first Christopher Reeve Superman film. - However, his career took a negative turn in the 1990s, with films such as Christopher Columbus: The Discovery, Free Money, and especially the 1996 version of The Island of Dr. Moreau (whose infamous production is the stuff of legends). His role as the titular character in the latter film also led to the creation of now seldom-seen South Park character Dr. Mephisto, who shares many of his mannerisms: - Brando's last role was a voice acting role in the unreleased film Big Bug Man- you can read more about it here. - Brando was known for his poor health in later years- by the 1990s, he was diabetic and weighed over 300 pounds (140 kilos). During this time, he also became close friends with Michael Jackson, and the latter would give him a portable oxygen tank and personal golf card to tour Neverland Ranch. - Brando made 2 appearances on the DeathList, in 1996 and 1997.

Bob Fernley, the de facto team principal at Force India's F1 team for many years, has died. Later worked in a key role for the FIA. Bit of a surprise, I hadn't heard he was ill. https://the-race.com/formula-1/former-force-india-f1-chief-fernley-dies-aged-70/

Congratulations to The Rollings Stones and their smash “Paint it, black”, the winner of the KoS of the UK No.1-hits of the 60s! "Paint it, black" was No. 1 in the UK (1 week), in the USA (2 weeks), the Netherlands (3 weeks and even 4 weeks in 1990!) and Canada (1 week) as well as in the top 10 of almost all music hit parades recorded at the time, e.g. No. 2 in Germany, Ireland, Sweden or Norway. All in all, this song is probably one of the most famous and significant songs of the Rolling Stones and the 60s, while the band certainly shaped an entire era with their music, their appearance and their lifestyle. A worthy winner of this round! I'm personally happy with the winner, even though I never voted for it The Grand Final of the 60s 01. The Rolling Stones – Paint it, black 02. You all made this topic (and the ones before) a special place on DeathList. Bravo! Now it's time for me to pass on the scepter to... I'm sorry, I don't know But I do know that the long-awaited UK No. 2 hits are about to be played. I'm really looking forward to that, especially the discussions about why this song isn't No.1 and what shit blocked it that very week...etc. I'm sure we'll have as much fun with these songs as we did with the No.1 songs. All that remains for me to say: Thank you and ciao – for now! Faithfully Yours Music-Book

I was trying to go for as many uniques as possible so I assumed someone else would pick her this year thwarting my ability to get a unique pick out of Ann Leslie! I think I have picked her in another pool but will check now! Yes I has chosen Ann Leslie in the Shadow deathlist pool.

av•a•tar : noun chiefly Hinduism a manifestation of a deity or released soul in bodily form on earth; an incarnate divine teacher. • An incarnation, embodiment, or manifestation of a person or idea : he set himself up as a new avatar of Arab radicalism. • Computing: a movable icon representing a person in cyberspace or virtual reality graphics. ORIGIN from Sanskrit avatara ‘descent,’ from ava ‘down’ + tar- ‘to cross.’ Doesn't say what the plural is, but it's from the Sanskrit, so "Avatars" is probably simplest.
