Sean 6,329 Posted December 8, 2016 Isn`t Glenn one of the only people still alive who was referenced in the song "We didn`t start the fire".Only ones other than him I can think of are Glenn Henry Kissinger Doris Day and The Queen. Edit:Forgot Brigitte Bardot and Bernie Goetz. British Beatlemania could refer to Any One Beatle, too, in a way. Chubby Checker's still going. As is Dylan. Also there was no mention of Kissinger in the song. Wasnt there? My bad

CoffinLodger 1,248 Posted December 8, 2016 Wow, he went quickly.Only found out last night he was in hospital! What a legend. Not many astronauts go on to be a US senator , let alone the oldest living one !
CoffinLodger 1,248 Posted December 8, 2016 Tough week or so for astronauts, as now John Glenn's hospitalized.Time for someone to make a John Glenn vs. Buzz Aldrin poll. Edit: I'd vote for John Glenn. The article sounds to me as if he won't even see 2017. Tough week or so for astronauts, as now John Glenn's hospitalized.Time for someone to make a John Glenn vs. Buzz Aldrin poll. Death Impends 7,977 Posted December 8, 2016 Mercury's Heaven Shame to see one of the few remnants of the old guard of iconic astronauts go, but then 95 is a great life.
RoverAndOut 4,746 Posted December 8, 2016 And finally, the pre-Apollo astronauts: The Mercury Seven Virgil 'Gus' Grissom, b.1926, d.1967 John Glenn - First American to orbit the Earth, b.1921 (aged 94) Scott Carpenter - Second orbital Mercury flight, b.1925, d.2013 Walter 'Wally' Schirra, Third orbital Mercury flight, b.1923, d.2007 Gordon 'Gordo' Cooper, Last American to fly in space alone, b.1927, d.2004 Donald 'Deke' Slayton, b.1924, d.1993 (Alan Shepard already listed above) So 7 of the men who walked on the moon are still going, 9 of those who went but didn't get out are still alive, the indomitable John Glenn is the only Mercury 7 astronaut still alive (HE'S 94!!!) and 4 of the early Apollo astronauts are still going. That said, looking at the ages, the next 10-20 years will probably see all of them off sadly. True pioneers. Updated for Glenn. Really sad, a legend in the truest sense of the word. The last of the Mercury Seven joins the rest.

The Happy Reaper 223 Posted December 9, 2016 Dammit, woke up to this. I'm a space buff so this to me is sadder than Bowie, Ali or any of the others this year. God Speed, John Glenn. LOS for now - we'll see you on the other side.

Sir Creep 7,070 Posted December 9, 2016 I haven't really put this one into perspective, but Glenn was a true American hero for sure. Moreso to my parents generation than mine, as I was more Neil Armstrong than Glenn who was before my time. But a damn solid man and Godspeed to you Mr. Glenn. Well if they were high school sweethearts she too is 95-ish so just how fahkin long do you think we should expect her to last? Define 'last long without him' so I have an inkling if we can put a date certain and make a poll question. SC
