Magere Hein 1,399 Posted December 14, 2015 Why am I limited to the amount of 'likes' I can give to posts??? Ive now, apparently, run out, used up all of todays or summat. Fuggin disgrace!!! Apparently there is such a limit, it may well be 10 for a 24 hour period, if I found the right setting. Nothing beats an experiment to find a fact, so I've just set it to 12. Do you get more likes?

Do you have to change this for each poster or is it set as a forum wide limit? If the former I would like some more. Have occasionally reached my limit.

Sir Creep 7,069 Posted December 15, 2015 What's everyone's initial thoughts as to people in comas; people with ALS; people with Alzheimer's..... As to their inclusion on your DL? I'm most interested in ALS, as they SAYYYYYY 3 years or so from diagnosis, yet most seem to survive past that---well past that. Are they just too hard to figure out to mess with? For instance David Lee Roths guitarist Jason Becker should be dead, years ago. Has he cashed the last of his good luck chips 2016? If an ALS victim gets a tracheotomy to assist breathing they can last forever, or am I wrong? (For instance Becker's bio says he can no longer talk and communicates through blinking....this tells me he has a tube breathing for him, and would explain his appearance on terra firms still). Alzheimer's seems as difficult to predict; and as bad off as Glen Campbell is it just seems a year too early to me to put his name up. Poor folks get about 5-7 years from diagnosis and I'd think rich folks get better care, so closer to 7. Campbell is only 3 years into his diagnosis. I know he's pooping into a diaper but goddammit I got stats on my side lol. People in comas let me down this year other than Bianchi. Anyway just wanted your thoughts. You experts you. gcreptile 10,939 Posted December 15, 2015 ALS deaths are so rare that I don't have a good feeling "trusting" them. There are days when I think this is the end of Joost Van Der Westhuizen, for example, when his spine needs stabilization with some plastic...thingie... and then he looks better again... I noticed that there are pretty many former sports stars, especially football stars with ALS, O.J. Brigance is another one of them. I don't know, that kind of ALS might be something different than "ordinary ALS" which killed the "Still Alice" director early in the year, Richard Glatzer. But Glatzer was already old and maybe that's a factor. And money might be a huge factor, so stars survive longer than 'ordinary' people, and this shorter lifespan of ordinary people gives the wrong statistical impression for ALS. On the other hand, these cases could prove to be profitable gambles, because these people give lots of points. Alzheimer's... the median survival prognosis is 10 years. But it could be that people with Alzheimer's also die of other reasons, not from Alzheimer's, especially when they're old. I mean Tony Booth is now at 10 years since diagnosis, so he's more likely to die now than not. But maybe that's because a 84 year old man could also die from heart failure or something like that. My current shortlist of 50 people has 3 with ALS and Alzheimer's, Booth and Van der Westhuizen among them. I have more confidence in people who suddenly experience a sudden health downturn. For example, I had scottish writer William McIllvaney under consideration after he canceled several events in mid-year. My feeling also says that Merle Haggard will go in 2016 but my mind does not want to pick him. I already know, I'll feel angry not to pick him. Or Helmut Schmidt, the hospitalization in mid-year started his downward spiral. The resistance of a person collapses at some point.

Can go on for years - look at Ariel Sharon, when he finally went it was a bit of a surprise. Alzheimer's? Depends on the person. I never had Terry Pratchett as he always seemed like he had another year in him (and his downhill stage went by very fast). I went for Jimmy Hill this year as everything did sound like he'd be lucky to live another month. It really depends on other factors, length of time, underlying issues, etc. Tony Booth, for example, has coronary problems on top of Alzheimer's. ALS? To start off, no, unless it's notably rapid. Once they go on the list though, they don't come off. Especially if we hit 5 years, which is around the max 99% or so of sufferers get. I've made the error of dropping Borgonovo and Chris Woodhead in the past, I'm not dropping Joost. Or Fernando Ricksen when I pick him. Jason Becker and Stephen Hawking are outliers but there is a reason they are outliers - its a nasty, nasty disease.
Sir Creep 7,069 Posted December 15, 2015 I have a sneaking suspicion that a person or two who are in my DougStanhope DP are trolling me here, but I'm in 1st place with two weeks and 1 last trade session to go, so they shouldnt be playing follow the leader. Would you pick up Nobby Stiles or Pat Harrington to die in the next 16 days? I think those are the top two Unchosen candidates. I appreciate your knowledge in advance. Spade_Cooley 9,474 Posted December 15, 2015 Nobby Stiles is the kind of person who, if he was dying, you'd know about it via the British press. Go with the Murrican.

Toast 16,063 Posted December 16, 2015 The use of the words 'douche' and 'douchebag' as insults. What's that about? Douche to me is an innocuous term, merely the French word for shower. How did this come to be adopted by our American cousins as a defamatory epithet?
Youwanticewiththat 611 Posted December 16, 2015 I suspect as a result of the practice of 'douche-ing' the anal and vaginal cavities. Mayhap Lardy will jump in here and confirm/and or deny.

As for sticking things up your own arse, well each to his own I suppose.
