3 pointsLosing her hair again, resigned to her "one-way ticket" and making funeral plans: https://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/linda-nolan-neil-sedaka-song-29777462 Don't worry Linda, you're on my team. That always helps survival chances. (Sadly though, it might not, given the story of this year).

2 pointsKukai died on this day 1188 years ago, aged 60. - Kukai came from a rich aristocratic family said to be a cadet branch of the Ōtomo family. - Kukai became a Buddhist monk, and published his first work in 798: Sangō Shiiki, an allegorical story explaining how he believed Buddhism was superior to Confucianism and Taoism. - In 804, he went to China on a state-sponsored trip, where he was introduced to Esoteric Buddhism. He returned to Japan in 806, having learned Chinese calligraphy and the Sanskrit language. - Kukai established a temple at Mount Koya in 816 after Emperor Saga allowed him to. It was consecrated in 819, but he was unable to practice his teachings there as he became involved in politics (as an advisor to the secretary of state). - Kukai was known for refurbishing the Manno Reservoir in 822. - Kukai would continue to gain influence in Japanese Buddhism, becoming an overseer of state rituals in 827. - Kukai established a school in (what is now) Kyoto in 828, opening it to people from all social statuses. - Kukai published a very long work in 830 called the Jūjūshinron, AKA the Treatise on The Ten Stages of the Development of Mind. TLDR:

1 pointPrince (Ƭ̵̬̊) died on this day 7 years ago, aged 57. - Prince was his real name- his fellow musician father, John Nelson, named him after his stage name, "Prince Rogers". - Prince wrote his first song when he was 7 years old. It was called "Funk Machine". - Prince was skilled at basketball. His high school coach called him an "excellent ball handler". - Prince has a shade of purple named after him, named after his "Love Symbol #2". This is what the particular shade looks like: - Michael Jackson's "Bad" was originally going to feature Prince- the latter turned down the offer due to the opening line "your butt is mine". - Prince was nominated for ten Razzie awards between 1985 and 2000, winning three: Worst Actor and Director for Under the Cherry Moon, and Worst Original Song for "Love or Money" from the film. - Prince appeared on TV twice: a Muppets Tonight episode in 1997, and a 2014 episode of New Girl (which was the lead-out program following Super Bowl XLVIII). - Prince died from a fentanyl overdose. He was cremated and his ashes were placed in a 3D-printed urn shaped like his mansion. - Prince sang "1999" 17 years before 1999, and died 17 years after that year.

1 pointI did like these short obits for candidates who died off the list. These shouldn't be as long as a regular candidates' one, but I found them interesting as they contained additional data like the lists these previous candidates were on and how some years the list could have had a higher number of hits if other people were kept on it.

1 pointA couple of weeks ago I was told I passed my final research paper, which means I have obtained my bachelor at university! It's something I'm quite happy with. And all of that while taking part in deathpools, talking about having priorities And this evening I got the news we'll get a kitten, she'll be welcomed in our home in May if everything goes to plan. It'll be the first time we have a cat since our last one passed away aged 17 at the end of 2021. It will be quite a change to suddenly have such a young animal at home but I'm looking forward to it.

1 pointWhat confuses me most is the appeal procedure. As in most continental European jurisdictions, appeal is an undeniable right in criminal (and most civil and administrative) cases. In Dutch law an appeal involves a new case at a higher court, in which all evidence (and possibly new) is heard and evaluated and the earlier verdict is of no particular value. The jury's verdict defies logic in many ways. I suppose there are legal reasons why an appeal was denied, but quality of the verdict can't have been one of them. Dutch law practice isn't immune to miscarriage of justice. Criminal cases are held before magistrate judges, who are legal scholars who additionally trained for the job. Criminal courts normally have three judges (one for petty crimes), appeal courts five, who decide by simple majority on guilt of the accused and sentence if applicable. From the last two decade I remember at least four murder cases in which innocents were convicted to long gaol sentences. In one case the appeals court affirmed a verdict (18 years + involuntary commitment) on circumstantial evidence only, while he didn't match descriptions from witnesses and no DNA of his was found on the crime scene. The convict was released after 4 years, after another man confessed the murder to the police. The other man was convicted on a DNA match. The first convict was never formally acquitted. regards, Hein
