Johnny Cash died on this day 20 years ago, aged 71. - Cash's birth name was the initials "JR"- his parents couldn't compromise on naming him "John" or "Ray" (considering the order, it seems that John won). Because he was unable to use initials in the military, he legally changed his name to "John R. Cash". - During his service, Cash was reportedly the first American to receive the news of Joseph Stalin's death (given to him via Morse code, likely from a mole in Russia). - During his career's high point in the '60s, Cash was addicted to amphetamines- a short time in jail got him sober, but he was reusing them by 1977, and completely dependent on them by 1989. - Cash was 1/4th Cherokee, and as such was an activist for Native American rights. He would be made an honorary member of the Seneca Tribe in 1968. - Cash made a few TV appearances- most notably on four episodes of Sesame Street, and as a talking coyote in Homer's hallucination in a 1997 episode of The Simpsons: - Late in his career, Cash would be known to cover songs (primarily from rock and grunge bands)- most notably his swan song, his cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt": - Cash would be diagnosed with multiple system atrophy in 1997, initially misdiagnosed as Parkinson's disease, and given 18 months to live. The following year, he came down with a severe case of pneumonia, and in 2000 would make his debut on the DeathList. Cash ended up dying from complications of his diabetes about four months after his wife June's death; he would be the 13th death of the (then-record-breaking) 2003 list (the last of four within a week).

The Apollo had a conveniently ignominious end - https://www.heraldscotland.com/life_style/arts_ents/23777143.bulldozers-fire-last-days-glasgow-apollo/ "On October 25, 1988, the derelict Apollo theatre on Renfield Street was devastated by fire. The alarm had been raised at 4am and fire crews from all over the city converged on the site. At the height of the fire, eight pumps, four turntable appliances and 60 firefighters were involved. "Eleven months before the blaze, in September 1987, bulldozers had demolished the front and rear of the building, leaving only the huge central portion intact, after building control inspectors had deemed parts of the Apollo to be unsafe. "At that time in September 1987, the building's owners, Ainsley Developments, were in receivership, and it was the Receiver who called in Burnthills Demolition. A few weeks prior to the demolition, city councillors had given planning permission to a London-based film and cinema company, Maybox, which wanted to build an £8.5m, 14-screen cinema on the site. Maybox had reportedly bought the property for £600,000."

I must say, when Norman does leave this Earth, it will be the end of an era in Classic TV. Many of his fellow producers, creators, directors and actors who have starred in his shows have preceded him. I can't think of any other classic TV creator still alive right now. At least he seems perfectly comfortable when his time comes.

Good, he’ll now have time to finally get hold of those industrial-strength throat lozenges, to the relief of eardrums everywhere. Unless Sky makes him a pundit just to inflict further misery.

On the second of May in 1995 English stage and film actor Michael Horden died aged 83. On stage he mainly took Shakespearen roles with King Lear being his most well known role. Born on the 3rd of October 1911 in Hertfordshire Horden was born into a very theatrical family. His early film roles in the 1930s were largely uncredited but he steadily built his career up over subsequent decades into bigger roles. Amongst the films he took bigger roles in were Passport to Pimlico, Scrooge, You Know what sailor's are, Sink the bismarck, The Pied Piper and The secret garden.
