Cross threading to say that Joan Freeman is not only not dead, but looking at the last photo in this link, looks pretty well. https://www.soundingsonline.com/news/adventurer-bruce-kessler-dies-at-88 She has just lost her husband of near 60 years mind, which sometimes takes a toll.

So we are at the quarter mark, and the first quarter has seen plenty of action as racers jockey for position. Before we get to the business end, a few bits of housekeeping to be done. Oscar Quitak, a pick for @msc, is widely accepted by deadpoolers to have died on 31st December, although nothing resembling a QO has appeared. Ideally I would like something more solid before allowing in a sub. However I am going to invoke rule 5.1 which says that "picks are not accepted if it cannot be reasonably ascertained that they are actually alive". Quitak is out, former SDP founder Bill Rodgers is subbed in. Nigerian politician Rotimi Akeredolu definitely died on 27th December. He was a pick for @drolwho evidently has not been keeping an eye on his team. Ma Shitu is subbed in. A thorough search of all the names has picked up a few hits who were missed along the way. A gentle reminder again folks: it really helps if players do an occasional check on their own picks, as there are too many obscure names for me to look them all up regularly. January 11th - Yuri Solomin - picked by @drol January 16th - Laurie Johnson - picked by @msc February 6th Robert M. Young - picked by @Torva Messor These are the fallers since the last update: March 26th: Swami Smaranananda March 29th: Ma Shitu March 29th - Imogen Stuart April 2nd - Juan Vincent Perez April 2nd - Maryse Conde April 2nd - Veljko Bulajic April 2nd - Zhang Lixiong April 4th - Lynne Reid Banks @arghtonis absolutely nailing this one, racking up the early hits in the pool that rewards delayed gratification. As they mentioned in the post above, there were three more hits this time around as they race into an unsustainable lead. Even more unsustainable is @drol's second place, as 7 hits have also been racked up to get there. @gcreptilekeeps in touch in third place, but 6 down is not ideal. @Famous6Evagets their first hit of the game to rise off the bottom, where 8 players still linger on nul points. This is the full leaderboard, which also appears on page 1. There won't be an update for a while, as I psyche myself up to sort out who won last years Jokers pool. But please, please, please keep an eye on your picks, and let me know of any hits along the way Arghton (454 points) 7 hits [Abdul Taib Mahmud, Jaako Valtanen, Ma Shitu, Paul Vachon, Solihin GP, Swami Smaranananda, Zhang Lixiong] Drol (313 points) 7 hits [Jonnie Irwin, Ma Shitu, Mario Zagallo, Manohar Joshi, Toby Keith, Yuri Solomin, Zhang Lixiong] Gcreptile (290 points) 6 hits [Franz Beckenbauer, Jason Smith, Jonnie Irwin, Paul Vachon, Thomas Stafford, Zhang Lixiong] Captain Chorizo (277 points) 5 hits [Glynis Johns, Lynne Reid Banks, Paul Vachon, Philip De Gaulle, Roland Bertin] Yorkshire Banker (269 points) 2 hit [Laurent De Brunhoff, Lynne Reid Banks*] The RadGuy (251 points) 6 hits [Brian Barczyk, Charlie Bird, Franz Beckenbauer, Joe Shannon, Jonnie Irwin*, Toby Keith] An Fear Beag (190 points) 5 hits [Charlie Bird, Frank Kitson, Imogen Stuart, Jonnie Irwin, Mike Sadler] Toast (186 points) 4 hits [Dave Myers*, Glynis Johns, Jonnie Irwin, Toby Keith] Buffalo Phil (184 points) 3 hits [Iris Apfel, Jonnie Irwin, Juan Vincent Perez] GrimUpNorth (185 points) 5 hits [Dave Myers, Derek Draper, Jason Smith, Jonnie Irwin*, Toby Keith] Prophet (156 points) 3 hits [Jonnie Irwin, Malachy McCourt, Stan Bowles] Wormfarmer (132 points) 2 hits [Iris Apfel, Phillipe De Gaulle] John Key (131 points) 3 hits [Derek Draper, Joe Shannon, Jonnie Irwin] Death By Arsenic (130 points) 3 hits [Glynis Johns, Maryse Conde, Toby Keith] WEP (126 points) 3 hits [Charlie Bird, Jason Smith, Jonnie Irwin] The Immortal (123 points) 3 hits [Dries Van Agt, Toby Keith, Wilson Fittipaldi] Salmon Mousse (123 points) 4 hits [Dave Myers, Jason Smith, Jonnie Irwin, Roy Battersby] Torva Messor (113 points) 5 hits [Glynis Johns, Jack Burke Jr., Jonnie Irwin, Joyce Randolph*, Robert M. German actor Peter Sodann has died on Friday. He was 87 years old. He began acting in television shows during the late 1970s. In 1992 he first appeared in his most famous screen role in the long-running crime series "Tatort". He remained with the series until November 2007. https://www.zeit.de/news/2024-04/07/schauspieler-peter-sodann-gestorben

I have a feeling I should rather update the Death By Numbers again, but what can I do? It's two Cup updates in one day! DevonDeathTrip scores with Welsh rugby player Martin Jones. It seems like I missed that hit since the articles came out on April 2nd already, but then, I can't do the googling of the roughly 20 obscure names in this round each day.... I do want to check at least every couple of days though. Well, Martin Jones seems to have died 72 hours after that fundraiser for him, which happened on March 29th. This puts the date of death on the 1st of April. Martin Jones was a prop for two of Wales' biggest clubs - and while he didn't have a Wikipedia page in any language (as far as I can tell, there isn't one in Cymru...) rugby is one of these British pastimes that makes even the players in the background receive attention. Neath RFC and the Cardiff Blues were both championship winning clubs, which is where I would draw the line. Players in amateur clubs would not be accepted, but Jones was, and DDT gets some distance over SirCreep. Thing is that he is in-a-way going to be the first one to run the lenght (or not exactly the lenght but from south to north) of Africa. Cook started his run from the most southern point of Africa (Cape Agulhas) and is supposed to finish at the most northern one (Ras Ben Sakka; 37°20′49″N), whereas Olsen (as the press release statement reads) started his Africa run from Taba (29°29′30″N; which isn't even the northernmost point of Egypt) to Cape of Good Hope (which also doesn't mean he ran the full lenght of Africa). As for how trustworthy that association is...well. It's weird. It's no official organisation, if that's what you're asking. The guy that founded it (and who released that statement) is also the same person who created that Wikipedia page (plus he shamelessly plugged his own photo and himself along the association's runners).

In case you haven't guessed yet, there's a new sheriff in town, after messaging MSC earlier today we've agreed that I'll be taking over the Crowdsourced Deathlist, with MSC still planning on publishing the full list of picks later on in the year, I'll be doing everything else from now on, including running next years.

Love the Raspberries, less keen on his solo stuff, but a talented guy indeed. And no, I've never seen Love Actually, obviously. It seems odd to me that he's being reported as 'guy who did those songs that sound like St Elmo's Fire from those romcoms"' when to me he's mainly 'singer/songwriter of the Raspberries', but then again I was surprised when Coltrane/Rickman/Gambon were billed as 'Harry Potter actor'. Edit: the other three from the classic line-up - Wally Bryson, Jim Bonfanti and Dave Smalley - all appear to be still on the vine (er, bush?) in their mid-70s (appropriately enough).

And here we go Jonnie Irwin went from the third-most popular pick last year to the second-most popular this year, despite being on three fewer teams. After a long wait 23 of you finally get to enjoy A Place in the Sun: drol 45 points. Charles De Gaulle and Torva Messor 40. DeathBecomesThem, Funeralopolis, maryportfuncity, and The Unknown Man 35. Book, Etushispushingupdaisies, Perhaps, Thatcher, wannamaker 25. Sean 20. John Key and The Old Crem 15. BuffaloPhil 10. and diego, ladyfiona, and Toast 25 sub points. DevonDeathTrip's nun-slim outlook is paying off so far, with a second hit in the shape of reggae elder statesman Aston Barrett. The Marley man wails out 28 points (20 base + 8 bonus). Dries Van Agt led the Netherlands for five years, and proved an unexpectedly lucrative HPDP pick thanks to his decision to undergo euthanasia. The lucky pickers are CalebH with 63 points (45 base + 18 bonus) and arghton 49 (35 base + 14 bonus), plus 25 sub points for ThereWillBeDeaths7. Maybe Van Agt put an end to it all so he didn't have to suffer Toby Keith on the airwaves any more. Perhaps the man who best epitomized the God-bothery jingoist decay of country music, the Dubya cheerleader found a Dead Duo Cup in the HPDP with theoldlady patriotically proclaiming 45 points and DeathByArsenic 10. The day after Van Agt and Keith saw two hits in a day once more. Renowned conductor Seiji Ozawa had directed his baton to charge two teams through a challenging symphony, with CaptainChorizo navigating upward by 35 points and JoeMoneypenny 5. Not Marcus Welby, nor the gerontology stuffed shirt, Robert M. Young was a pioneer in independent filmmaking known for his frequent usage of Edward James Olmos. Yet another victim of the curse of Sulu, Torva Messor captures 25 sub points. A few days later was another with two cadavers to its name. Robert Badinter was behind the abolition of the death penalty in France, but we all will face the Grim Reaper's guillotine one day. MariNisia gets 28 points (20 base + 8 bonus). Can frontman Damo Suzuki was long ailing with colon cancer, and now that he's losing, he's losing, he's losing, he's losing his pulse, proved to be the vitamin justonecornetto needed with a value of 42 points (30 base + 12 bonus). Alexis Buchman. I don't like this pick at all. Apparently softball is technically a different sport from baseball, but FFS I'm just going to consider her a baseball player since I don't really know or care what the difference is. So -7 points for Banana (35 base - 42 bonus). Irene Camber was a leading fencer who jousted to Olympic gold in the 50s in the foil competition, well before hitting 80s stardom with "Flashdance... What a Feeling" and "Fame". She's worth 49 points (35 base + 14 bonus) for MariNisia. Half of the Hairy Bikers hirsute foodie duo, the death of Dave Myers sees two teams rev up their motorcycles for a cuisine tour. Toast dines on 30 points, and DevonDeathTrip 25. Wrestler Paul Vachon proved undeniably hardy, surviving multiple cancer bouts and the unnatural deaths of his sister and daughter. CaptainChorizo didn't butcher his HPDP prospects with a high placement delivering 56 points (40 base + 16 bonus). Lastly, the first hit of March, and we are finally up to date. Iris Apfel, the rimmed-glasses fashionista who hobnobbed with high Hollywood and US presidents, kept chic until the very end. One last burst of style comes with her HPDP points, fancying up BuffaloPhil by 30 points and Pedro67 20. And here be the next scoreboard. The narrative is roughly the same as last scoreboard - Banana holds a slender lead over Perhaps, while both have decent breathing room from the chasing pack. Still early days though... 1.
