4 pointsAlma Mahler died on this day 60 years ago, aged 85. - Alma was born as Alma Schindler to the noted Austrian painter Emil Schindler. She would decide to follow her father into the arts by composing piano music: - However, Alma was more well-known for her many relationships (and three marriages) with artists and musicians of her day. She was the girlfriend of the painter Gustav Klimt and the composer Alexander Zemlinsky- but the first one she married was Gustav Mahler in 1902. Mahler disapproved of Alma's aspirations of becoming a composer (possibly not wanting her to become more famous than him). After the death of their young daughter Maria in 1907, Alma would begin having an affair with the architect Walter Gropius, with Gustav seeking counselling from none other than Sigmund Freud. - Gustav Mahler died in 1911, and after Alma had a brief relationship with painter and playwright Oskar Kokoschka, she would remarry to Gropius in 1915. She had a daughter (Manon) with him. But he would be drafted into World War I, and once again she sought a romantic relationship while her husband was off fighting- this time with author Franz Werfel, having an illegitimate son with him. Alma and Walter would divorce in 1920. - Alma would not marry Werfel until 1929, and the two would flee Austria in 1938, leaving for France before fleeing there to the U.S. in 1940. After Franz's death in 1945, Alma would move to New York City, where she remained until her death. Her body would be repatriated to Austria. - After reading her obituary, Tom Lehrer would write a song about her life for his album That Was The Year That Was:

1 pointYou read that right. 30 years of the DDP. A mighty milestone few could've envisioned when it was a local 90s affair that had its own trophy. 2024, despite an overall hits tally on track to break the record, felt fairly arid on the headliner and competitive fronts, perhaps portending a mighty 2025 enema. Whatever happens, @time, @Banana and I are once again here to guide you through it... Dear Jimmy - either die in the next week, or go all the way to- wait, I wrote this before... THE RULES are near exactly what they were last time, with the only edits done being updating all instances of 2023/2024 to 2024/2025, and changing The Times' URL from .co.uk to .com. IMPORTANT REMINDER: The spreadsheet method of entry that began in 2021 remains in service. The 2025 spreadsheet, identical to the 2024 one in all but filename, can be found here. It is heavily recommended to use the spreadsheet as means of entry to reduce Banana's workload as much as possible. If you are absolutely unable to work with the Excel spreadsheet, still make sure to recheck GUN's DDP entry guide thread from 2020 to make the formatting of your email as smooth as possible.

1 point3 brilliant gigs in 11 days. Started off with Aussie pink Floyd at the Royal Albert hall. Fair to say they have developed their act a bit since I first saw them 30 odd years ago. Absolutely superb, highlight being pigs (3 kinds) and shine on. Music has got to the stage where a tribute act can sell out the Royal Albert at £70+ a ticket! Next was Beth Hart at the lighthouse Poole. God that woman’s got some chops in her. A really variety of her stuff and a couple of cover well all delivered with passion and power. she went a bit off the setlist, to the stage where she ran into Curfew, so the non existent Encore was probably not what it could have been. Just on the train home from Paul Heaton and Rianne Downey at Eventim Hammersmith. Wow. Rianne is no Jacquie Abbot, but brings a whole new energy to the Set and what a voice. The pair of them had the audience eating out the palm of their hand from the first song. Just one of those great atmosphere gigs I won’t forget in a hurry. Rotterdam for Rianne and Caravan of love for Paul as the last songs showcased just how great they were. Shout out the zutons in support who I’ll definately seek out for a headline show. Next up Sharon Shannon and various guest stars ( Imelda May, Camille O’Sullivan etc) in a tribute night to Shane MacGowan at o2 Shepard’s Bush......although I may slot in John Otway at the half moon Putney if I feel like it on Sunday.

I don't like BoRhap but I love 'These Are The Days Of Our Lives', so I'm not interfering there. I am sick sick sick of people dissing 'Do They Know It's Christmas'. It's mostly people who are too stupid to understand it, who take everything literally, have no concept of poetic licence, or worst of all yatter on about it being patronising and condescending when they should be bloody grateful that people cared enough to help. That song was written very quickly and I thought then, and still do, that it is brilliant. It combines the sound of a Christmas record with lyrics that proved very effective in emptying purses and wallets. I don't agree with the re-runs - they should have come up with something original.

1 pointThat was never Christmas No.1. And if it was, it would’ve been in the first round; the whole point is that this is the nightmarish side of the charts, and that’s why only two of these horrendous things are going through to the final.

1 pointJust a couple days later, Randy Moss announced he is stepping away from his ESPN analyst role to deal with this health challenge. Certainly sounded like prostate cancer at first, given his message specifically to men to get regular check-ups. But now I'm seeing speculation online that it's pancreatic or liver cancer because of his yellow-ish eyes. To the non-US users here (assuming y'all don't mark this thread as read) who are probably unfamiliar -- Moss is one of the most iconic NFL players of all time. Absolutely will get QOs across the board, not that there should be any doubt given several QO outlets already covered this health situation.
