12 pointsShocking to think one of Britain’s finest on stage and screen is merely filed away in character actors, whilst we have threads for imitation cricketer Bob Uecker and professional gobshite Katie Hopkins.

8 pointsRead her last Plow-rites 5/50 16th January 2025 Actress Dame Joan Plowright, Baroness Olivier has died. Plowright began her stage career aged 20 in 1948, joining the English Stage Company in 1956. The following year she co-starred alongside Sir Lawrence Olivier in the original London production of John Osbourne’s The Entertainer, the pair would marry 4 years later. In 1960 she made her big screen debut in the film adaptation of The Entertainer, for which she received a BAFTA nomination for best newcomer. In 1961 she won the Tony Award for best actress for her performance in A Taste of Honey. In 1963 she began working with the National Theatre, and spent much of the next two decades performing at the Old Vic Theatre and other theatre houses around London. During this time she frequently appeared in televised plays for ITV. In 1991 she appeared in a supporting role in the film Enchanted April and won the Golden Globe for best supporting actress, as well as receiving an Oscar nomination. In the same Golden Globes ceremony she won the award for best supporting actress in a television role for her performance in HBO’s TV film Stalin. Following these accolades she began making more appearances in film, she became recognisable to a younger audience for her roles in Dennis the Menace (1993), 101 Dalmatians (1996) and Disney’s Dinosaur (2000). Following a CBE in 1970, In 2004 was made a DBE (Dame). Having struggled with her eyesight for a few years, in 2014 Plowright was legally blind and announced her retirement from acting. Joan Plowright died yesterday aged 95, putting us on 5 hits just over half a month into the year. She was making her 1st appearance on the Crowdsourced Deathlist, at no.22

6 pointsThink I'll better get a quick update going, before I get buried under the avalanche.... First, golf writer Steve DiMeglio gets counted for Banana. A tweet says he died at the 1st of January and that's what we take. I have theories, but then, I wonder how many "official" death accounts are somewhat faked to give a better impression. We have to go with what we know! Funeralopolis got a slightly late New York Times obit for progressive US theologician Richard B. Hays - and good that he did, as he was the joker. Then we get to the popular and expected hits: Rick "Black Bart" Harris and Peter Yarrow. These names get most players off the ground and score joker points for a few, well actually, Black Bart only for Pedro, Peter Yarrow only for Steve. But the joker points matter immensely in these early scoreboards, as you'll see. Linda Nolan, as popular a pick as these other two, also scores lots of points for people. She's a bit younger though, gives more points, and theoldcrem gets joker points, as well. Legendary US avantgarde director David Lynch is a hit for 8 people. Not quite canon, but a valuable differential for a select few. Shiu Ka-Chun is a hit for wannamaker and me. While we (?) wait with bated breath for a DDP QO, even a one sentence mention in a UK Hong Kong news item would be enough, thank you!, he already received a quick New York Times obit. I am now awaiting an obit for fantasy author Howard Andrew Jones, let's see..probability...30%? Looks like I hadn't previously scored Mike Rinder. A long-time member of scientology, then turned whistleblower. His involvement in a couple of prominent documentaries assured almost universal obits. A hit for deathbecomesthem and me. Next up, "controversial" italian photographer Oliviero Toscani. He was prominent for the shocking Benetton adverts of the 90s, i.e. portraits of let's see...a nun kissing a priest, a black and a white woman adopting an asian child, a carpet of condoms... and similar stuff in that vein. Shocking! It's very shocking that only 4 players score. Who else... oh, of course Jean-Marie Le Pen. He kind of bridged the gap between, uh... traditional European anti-semitism and modern alt-right hate represented by his daughter. I mean, the difference is basically, who do they hate more, jews or muslims? A popular hit in this game. Finally, Chad Morgan is a unique hit for JoeMoneypenny. The Australian country musician had very prominent teeth, and I can't help thinking of a classic german skit, "Das Film-Monster", in which one of our classic german comedians plays a horror actor named "Vic Dorn" getting interviewed - and the joke is that he is not wearing a mask, as the interviewer presumed, but that this face is real. True story: I once played that guy on stage.... Edit: Forgot to mention, Joan Plowright is, of course, scored, too. She basically triggered this update. She won two Golden Globes and was Oscar-nominated. Her theatre career was equally important, and she was a Tony winner, too. Quite the resumé, even if not that widely known outside of the UK. Some teams didn't choose a joker in time. In this case, the first name on their list becomes a joker, that is Ann Margret for GreatUncleBulgaria, and Agnes Keleti for Torva Messor. Hope I didn't miss any messages from you, please tell if so! The resulting scoreboard is this: Rank Team Score 1 Funeralopolis 311 2 wannamaker 260 3 Steve 258 4 Banana 248 5 gcreptile 242 6 Pedro67 221 7 Sean 219 8 Thatcher 202 8 Hell 202 10 Book 187 10 TorvaMessor 187 12 Perhaps 184 13 Yorkshire Banker 176 14 theoldcrem 175 15 msc 173 15 etushipushingupdaisies 173 15 RadGuy 173 18 LadyFiona 171 19 therewillbedeaths7 153 20 BuffaloPhil 145 20 Summer in Transylvania 145 20 MariNisia 145 20 livingbygrace 145 20 Death Impends 145 20 Liz Lemon 145 20 An Fear Beag 145 20 Cpt. 6 pointsAlways found it Plowright weird tbh: "She's one of the great elder dames of British acting, one of our most iconic performers" "Oh right, what are her most famous roles?" "The early 90s Dennis the Menace and Burning Down the House with Queen Latifah."

4 pointsWell when you only have 50 spots to fill there are bound to be a lot of sick and 90+ year old famous people not on the list.

4 pointsBoth Christopher Benjamin and Joan Plowright were dropped from my team this year which as long as I can get some autumn hits seems sensible but a bird in the ground is worth two in the bush.

4 pointsEileen Atkins has apparently spent a good chunk of the last decade keeping an eye on Jean Marshs well being. She's always made sure she was there when needed for her frail best friend (who is now outliving most of their other friends).
-
4 pointsShe was more of a theatre actress - knighthoods and damehood’s traditionally went to the theatre actors earlier and at a higher rate than the ones who did mainly films and TV.

3 pointsThe second from the Tea With The Dames-ensemble to go, just 4 months after Maggie Smith. Judi Dench and Eileen Atkins are left, both are 90 years old. I would have loved to see Joan Plowright on the DL, well...

3 pointsHis wife just posted this video of him visiting LA firefighters. Can still stand, walk around, and interact with people on some level. Doesn't seem like he's particularly declined physically in any real way. His dementia appears to be progressing quite slowly relative to most FTD cases. As said above, given Starmer-Smith is still living and has been bedbound for what, 5-6 years now?, my hunch is that Willis could see his mid-70s at this rate.

3 pointsI've been hanging around here for 10 years today! Happy anniversary to me, I guess...if you like that sort of thing.

2 pointsTo be fair, the death of professional gobshite Katie Hopkins will give us a degree of satisfaction.
