I remember flagging these pictures up in October 2020 when his hands were discoloured and swollen and his lips were blue. He has also had a triple bypass in February 2003 so there is a significant health history stretching back a long way. His falls are becoming more frequent and serious recently which is unsurprising if he is zoning out in private the way he is in public. He is most certainly in increasingly poor health and worthy of serious discussion for a place on next years list.

McConnell clearly has something very seriously wrong with him. This is the second time he has frozen and given he has had several falls including one resulting in broken ribs and concussion so I reckon it is happening in private instances too. The fact that no one around him seems fazed or concerned when this happens in public makes me think it has been witnessed by others off camera too. If he was well he would have been taken to hospital after these events which leads me to conclude they know what is causing the problem and no condition that causes that sort of episode is minor especially when you are in a senior position of power. The Dr is limited to what he can disclose due to confidentiality but it is clear McConnell is not someone you would describe as well. If the Doctor were to say no this man is not fit for office he would be hounded by Republicans and that could make his position untenable as he could and most likely would be accused of being partisan.

Jacques Cartier died on this day 466 years ago, aged 65. - Cartier was born on New Year's Eve in 1491- the first year of his life would see Europe's discovery of the Western Hemisphere. He lived in a port town, and was already a respected sailor by the time of his first transatlantic voyage. - In 1534, the bishop of his hometown of Saint-Malo introduced him to King Francis I, and he commissioned Cartier to find a passage westward to Asia. He and his crew would set off on April 20 of that year, and arrived in Newfoundland three weeks later. - Once he arrived in what is now Quebec, Cartier would encounter several indigenous tribes- firstly the Mikmaq, whom he traded with. Then he met a group of Iroquois- they were amicable until the natives realized that Cartier was claiming their land for France by erecting a 30-foot cross and attempting to kidnap two of the chief's sons- the chief, Donnacona, allowed Cartier to take them to France only if they returned with goods from Europe with them. - Cartier embarked on a second voyage in 1535, sailing up the St. Lawrence River to what is now Montreal. - Cartier and his crew would come down with scurvy during the winter of 1535- they were staying in the Iroquois capital of Stadacona, where Chief Donnacona informed them of tea extracted from cedar trees would cure their Vitamin C deficiencies (they didn't know what Vitamin C was at the time, but they knew the tree tea cured scurvy). Cartier decided to repay Donnacona the following year by... abducting him and taking him back to France, having believed him to be aware of a mythical "Kingdom of Saguenay" further north that was full of treasure. Donnacona would be personally looked after by the king, but he would never return home and died in France around 1539. - Cartier's third voyage in 1541 would be met with less friendly interactions with the Iroquois- probably because he kidnapped their chief. He would return home with what he thought were diamonds- only for it to be found that it was just quartz. This gave rise to a new expression: "as false as Canadian diamonds". - Cartier would end up being the victim of a typhus epidemic, having believed to have reached Asia all his life- he only got as far as eastern Canada.

I now have my own list of individuals for the remaining months of 2023. For September and October 2023, I added a specific date of prediction while for November and December 2023, I used the month and year without a specific date of prediction. September 2023 (9) Katherine Paterson: 10/31/1932 – 09/01/2023 Dub Jones: 12/29/1924 – 09/06/2023 Unknown: xx/xx/19xx – 09/10/2023 Ronnie Schell: 12/23/1931 – 09/13/2023 Unknown: xx/xx/19xx – 09/14/2023 Jerry Hardin: 11/20/1929 – 09/18/2023 Ethel Kennedy: 04/11/1928 – 09/23/2023 Unknown: xx/xx/19xx – 09/26/2023 Unknown: xx/xx/19xx – 09/30/2023 October 2023 (9) An individual born in 1933 who already turned 90 to pass away in early October: xx/xx/1933 – 10/0x/2023 Unknown: xx/xx 19xx – 10/10/2023 Bernie Kopell: 06/21/1933 – 10/13/2023 James Baker: 04/28/1930 – 10/16/2023 Noam Chomsky: 12/07/1928 – 10/18/2023 Estelle Parsons: 11/20/1927 – 10/19/2023 Unknown: xx/xx/19xx – 10/21/2023 Robert McGinnis: 02/03/1926 – 10/27/2023 Jean Malaurie: 12/22/1922 – 10/28/2023 November 2023 (9) June Spencer: 06/14/1919 – 11/xx/2023 An unknown individual born in 1924 after they turned 99: xx/xx/1924 – 11/xx/2023 Bill Hayes: 06/05/1925 – 11/xx/2023 Doc Severinsen: 07/07/1927 – 11/xx/2023 Johnny Gilbert: 07/13/1928 – 11/xx/2023 Mangosuthu Buthelezi: 08/27/1928 – 11/xx/2023 (Sub is Fumihiko Maki: 09/06/1928 – 11/xx/2023) William Roache: 04/25/1932 – 11/xx/2023 An individual born in late September or sometime in October of 1933 who turned 90 less than 2 months ago: either 09/xx/1933 – 11/xx/2023 or 10/xx/1933 – 11/xx/2023 Unknown: xx/xx/19xx – 11/xx/2023 December 2023 (about 9 to 10) An individual born in 1922 after they turned 101: xx/xx/1922 – 12/xx/2023 Ali Hassan Mwinyi: 05/08/1925 – 12/xx/2023 Abdoulaye Wade: 05/29/1926 – 12/xx/2023 Sam Nujoma: 05/12/1929 – 12/xx/2023 An individual born in 1930 at least 5 and a half months after they turned 93 An individual born in 1931 after they turned 92 An individual born in 1932 after they turned 91 Morton Subotnick: 04/14/1933 – 12/xx/2023 Another individual born in 1933 after they turned 90: xx/xx/1933 – 12/xx/2023 Because Inga Swenson (born December 29, 1932) passed away last month in the latter part of July, Katherine Paterson (born October 31, 1932) is now on my list for early September 2023. This is also because Vince Dooley (born September 4, 1932) and Mike Hodges (born July 29, 1932) passed away on October 28, 2022 and December 17, 2022 respectively, which were a couple of days before the 90th birthdays of Katherine Paterson and Inga Swenson respectively as well as the date when Inga Swenson passed away was a few days before the late Mike Hodges would have been 91 and my prediction for Katherine Paterson is a few days before Vince Dooley (would have been 91. Because Johnny Lujack (born January 5, 1925) passed away last month in late July at the age of July, I now have Dub Jones (born December 29, 1924) on my list for September 2023 since they are both football players and born only a couple days apart. Plus July 25 was a few days before the late Mike Hodges' birthday and September 6 is a few days after the late Vince Dooley's birthday. Because Gavin MacLeod (born February 28, 1931) and Bernie Kopell (born June 21, 1933) both starred in the romantic comedy-drama TV series "The Love Boat while Gavin MacLeod passed away in May 2021 3 months after he turned 90, Bernie Kopell is on my list for October 2023 making him at least surpass his co-star. Because Mickey Kuhn (born September 21, 1932) passed away in November 2022 less than two months after his birthday, I have an individual born in late September 1933 or born sometime in October 1933 on my list for November 2023 meaning they would have turned 90 less than two months before their passing. Because Budge Patty (born February 11, 1924) and Gerald Stern (born February 22, 1925) were both born in February but in the years 1924 and 1925 respectively and passed away both in October but in the years 2021 (October 4 for Patty) and 2022 (October 27 for Stern) respectively both at age 97, I now have Robert McGinnis (born February 3, 1926) on my list for October 2023 since he was born in February 1926. Because Eddie Robinson (born December 15, 1920) and Charley Trippi (born December 14, 1921) were both born in December but in the years 1920 and 1921 respectively and passed away both in October but in the years 2021 (October 4 for Robinson) and 2022 (October 19 for Trippi) respectively, I have Jean Malaurie (born December 22, 1922) on my list for October 2023. Because Doris Grumbach (born July 12, 1918) and Louise Tobin (born November 11, 1918) both passed away in November 2022 both at age 104, I have June Spencer (born June 14, 1919) for November 2023 and at that time she would have surpassed both of them as well as outlived Queen Elizabeth II (born April 21, 1926) by slightly more than 8 years. Because Charles Duncan Jr. (born September 9, 1926) as well as that James McDivitt (born June 10, 1929) passed away in October 2022, I have James Baker (born April 28, 1930) on my list for October 2023. This is because Charles Duncan Jr. and James Baker were both American government officials while James McDivitt who was an astronaut passed away at the age of 93 surpassing US president Ronald Reagan (February 6, 1911 – June 5, 2004) by a few days. I am expecting James Baker to surpass US president Gerald Ford (July 14, 1913 – December 26, 2006) by a few days to see a similar pattern. I have Noam Chomsky on my list for October 2023 so that there can be a 93-year-old 1930-born individual who already surpassed US president Gerald Ford (in this case, James Baker) and a 94-year-old 1928-born individual whose date of passing is a couple of days after that 93-year-old in that same month and year. This is because 93-year-old Nick Holonyak (born November 3, 1928) passed away in September 2022 a couple of days after 92-year-old Frank Drake (born May 28, 1930) who also passed away in that same month and year. This is also because US president George H.W. Bush (June 12, 1924 – November 30, 2018) passed away at the age of 94 and he surpassed both, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan by more than a year. Because state leaders which were Luis Echeverría Álvarez (born January 17, 1922), Francisco Morales Bermúdez for Peru (born July 14, 1921), and Fidel Ramos for the Philippines (born March 18, 1928) passed away in July 2022, I have three on my list which are Ali Hassan Mwinyi for Tanzania (born May 8, 1925), Abdoulaye Wade for Senegal (born May 29, 1926), and Sam Nujoma for Namibia (born May 12, 1929), plus some other notable state leaders passed away in December 2021 which were Norwegian prime minister Kåre Willoch (born October 3, 1928) and Greek president Karolos Papoulias (born June 4, 1929). Because Jean-Luc Godard (born December 3, 1930) passed away in September 2022, I have an individual born in December 1931 on my list for September 2023 in this case being Ronnie Schell (born December 23, 1931), plus Inga Swenson whose birthday is a few days after Schell's meaning over a year younger than him passed away last July. Because Herbert Deutsch (born February 9, 1932) passed away in December 2022 the same year he turned 90, I have Morton Subotnick (born April 14, 1933) on my list for December 2023 since they are both electronic music composers. Because Loretta Lynn (born April 14, 1932), Lodewijk van den Berg (born March 24, 1932), and Vince Dooley (born September 4, 1932) all passed away in October 2022 the same year they all turned 90 as well as that Mike Foster (born July 11, 1930) and Sean Connery (born October 31, 1930) both passed away in October 2020 the same year they both turned 90, I have another individual born in 1933 after they turned 90 on my list for October 2023. In 2022, the number of entries on a website that were moved to the "In Memoriam" page meaning passed away in September was 14 which is the same as April of that year. The number of entries on a website that were moved to the "In Memoriam" page meaning passed away in April 2023 was 9, 5 less than April of 2022. I am hoping the number of entries that are moved to the "In Memoriam" page meaning passed away in September 2023 is the same as April 2023 or does not exceed that number as well as that I am hoping the number of total entries for the entire In Memoriam 2023 is LESS than In Memoriam 2022.

So after 2/3rds of the year, we are at 210 hits so far. August was another fine month with 24 hits - keeping pretty much following some kind of linear trend. It does seem like a record will be reached fairly easily. We'd need 71 more hits in 122 days. Curiously though how it clashes with the fairly low top score with nobody having reached triple digits. But then, points and hits seem to be spread fairly evenly across a lot of teams. Jonnie Irwin, James Whale, Steve McMichael, Frank Field, Nigel Starmer-Smith, Simon Cowell, maybe Linda Nolan, Rob Burrow, and maybe Johnny Ruffo are the canon names who have not yet died this year but might still throw the scoreboard into disorder. As long as they live, the gates for a random winner who just happens to pick the right Drop 40 names (:cough: Shane MacGowan :cough:, or Jimmy Carter) remain pretty open.

New Buthelezi update here, apparently: https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2023-09-01-buthelezi-still-not-out-of-hospital-daughter-says-burn-wound-to-blame/ According to his daughter the story of him having been burnt by a hot water bottle is true and the wound is still healing, which is the only reason he's still in hospital. However he was on life support until last week with pneumonia, surgery and diabetes complications etc. Of course he's now recovering fastly and could communicate well on his 95th. The most absurd part of the article is that they're saying "he won't live forever".

McConnell pulls some impressive maneuvers that I don't think anyone without institutional knowledge could pull off. He blocked Obama's Supreme Court nominee -- which the GOP picked out themselves years ago. Article from 2010 of the GOP recommending Merrick Garland: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-court-hatch/republican-would-back-garland-for-supreme-court-idUSTRE6456QY20100506 There's also the huge problem that's been going on a decade+ now with the GOP that's more been in the House but creeping into the Senate: no one wants to be their party leader. Boehner was always in tears; Ryan (who was young) quit; McCarthy's term started as a huge embarrassment and is the envy of no one. I heard that Thune and Cornyn want McConnell's job but I see why there's been no grand movement for it. Feinstein is different because she is utterly replaceable; I don't see how the other party members benefit from her being there, and they just need to guarantee her staff jobs. Currently the issue is the divided Senate could keep her committee seats from being filled, which frankly they shouldn't have put themselves in that situation.
