Breaking news flash on BBC News seen live and 3 DLers still beat you to it!

Surprising, though didn't he have some major accident in the 90s, I vaguely recall.

Sounds like he was ill. The statement also mentioned he was working till the day he died - those words are usually used when the person was ill but carried on through the illness rather than a sudden death.

My old mum's favourite chef was Rhodes.

Maybe they are somewhere sharing recipes. RIP.

According to Independent, Rhodes had his own range of "cooking items and bread mixes". So somewhere out there there may be packets bearing the legend "Gary Rhodes Brown Bread"?

No.  It was a sudden event, a "subdural hematoma, which is usually associated with a brain injury".

The announcement doesn't go into details, but he had possibly had a fall or banged his head somehow (speculation only).

Yes the announcement is a little ambiguous in that he collapsed at home and died from a subdural hematoma but it's not clear if he collapsed because of the hematoma or got the hematoma when he collapsed which led to his death.

Either way very sad and sudden for his nearest and dearest.

Their attempt to clear it up confuses me. Word "unfortuneately" appears twice in an explanation that has him collapsing after dinner and sustaining a head injury that led to the subdural hematoma that killed him https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-50587782

So, were some recreational drugs involved between the dinner table and the collision with the floor, or summat?

How is it this thread not updated?  No wonder I was clueless.  ‘
’Trust your fellow DLers’ they said.

’What could go wrong?’ they said.

The legendary chef Gray Kunz, whose restaurant Lespinasse was one of the New York’s most influential fine-dining destinations, has died. He was 65. The cause of death is not yet known, but the news, which started circulating on social media, was confirmed by Swire Hotels, a company with which Kunz ran restaurants abroad.

Kunz became famous as the exacting, creative culinary mind behind Lespinasse in the ’90s, a restaurant that was a farm system for top New York chefs. Andrew Carmellini, Floyd Cardoz, Rocco DiSpirito, Corey Lee, and others worked under him there (that's not a euphemism), and the restaurant is still talked about 17 years after it closed.
