Peter Padfield, best known to me for his book "The Titanic and the Californian" (1965), has died aged 89.

The book is an attempt to excuse Captain Lord of the Californian from ignoring the distress signals of the Titanic which was just a few miles away.

Never been a massive fan of her work (thankfully my daughter rejected her friends Tracy Beaker obsessions) but she is always good value on the interview circuit. She is a big figure in Children's literature and I probably need to get her on my theme team

As she is a dame I should put seriously consider putting her on my theme team as well.

I guess that makes the whole of the U.K. pedantic twats.  Thanks for clearing that up.

I love it how you get owned on here, every single week, but rather than admit you’re wrong you double down, then come back the next day for some more. You’re like the gimp of DL Forums.

The BBC and Reading Charities have published a list of 70 titles for the Queen's Jubilee Read

The list will contain 10 books for each decade of the Queen's reign from authors across the Commonwealth (I have only read one book on the list)

Up to 1982 there are 10 surviving writers

George Lamming (b.1927)

J M G Le Clezio (b. 1940)

Ngugi wa Thiang'o (b.1938)

Ayi Kwei Armah (b.1939)

Bepsi Sidhwa (b.1938)

Alice Munro (b.1931)

Athol Fugard (b.1932)

Anita Desai (b.1937)

Salman Rushdie (b.1947)

Thomas Keneally (b.1935)

Some of these are already on the radar but others are not

Me too - The Book Thief is my solitary accomplishment from that list. (better book than film).

I've read six, but can only remember two of them (The Handmaid's Tale and The Remains of the Day).

Have also read, long ago, The Girls of Slender Means, The Sea The Sea, The God of Small Things, and White Teeth.

But remember virtually nothing about them.

I think I probably read A Clockwork Orange back in the day, but I may be confusing it with seeing the film.  I did read a couple of his other novels.

I have only read 2 books on this list (The Thorn Birds and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) and about 2% of Clockwork Orange. I couldn't stand it!

Handmade's Tale and Hitchhiker's Guide here. Wolf Hall is on my shelf, and in the pipeline, so to say. We almost purchased Shuggie Bain at the store a few times. Might still do.

^^ Yes! I also couldn't stand Clockwork Orange! That stupid language pissed me off immediately.

7 for me, but none from this millennium so far.

Surprised that Doris Lessing doesn't feature anywhere.

I have noticed that dislike of a Clockwork Orange meets with disagreement on the Internet. There have been attempts to convince me of the movie, too. I don't like it either.
