The attacks on her are constant. It’s deeply uncomfortable. There’s a deep-rooted hatred there, for some ominous reason. Let’s leave the whole thing alone before it gets even nastier. I think she’s a cunt. If that makes me a racist, I couldn’t give two sloppy shits. I think he is a cunt. If that makes me anti-ginger, I couldn’t give three sloppy shits. Also, why are you discussing Meghan on the Prince Philip thread? You obsessed or something? Do you fancy her or something?

The bile spewing out of several people when it comes to M & H is deeply uncomfortable. At least if it is all contained in one festering toilet bowl of a thread, people don’t have to look at it.

Why, why why, why why is this in Philip’s fucking thread? Meghan has her own thread full of poison. Go there instead, so that people bored of this saga can ignore it.

The biggest problem I have with the vain self-obsessed pair is that by being so vague they simultaneously have trashed the entire royal family by association yet haven`t given any details anyone can dispute or investigate.I couldn`t find any claim they made that anyone could investigate. What is the palace supposed to do? If they say they can`t investigate which they can`t really as it is so vague as we don`t know who said what where or why they will be called stuffy out of touch heartless and racist. If someone came to me at work and told me I am alledging X Y and Z happen but won`t tell you where when or whom it occurred I would have to say truthfully if that is the case I can`t do anything. I only watched it as everyone was talking about it. It looked very stage managed rehearsed and not overly convincing and it was much to do about nothing in terms of substance. If you can`t name people who have wronged you don`t bother speaking out. They wanted it vague so there could be no repercussions except revenge via reputational damage to the institution. That is the only conclusion I can deduce. They must have known this would seriously hurt the Queen and other senior royals on quite a deep emotional level at a time when old Phil is clearly getting towards the end. What I find most telling is that this is a bigger scandal than Prince Andrew which beggars belief considering the seriousness of the allegations against him and the fact far more is documented and known about the circumstances surrounding that saga.

Well a famous person identifying as (a) female (b) black and (c) suffering mental health issues didn’t get everything she wanted so naturally the whole world is to blame and owes her big time. Oh, and before anyone accuses me of being a racist, misogynist or whatever, let me pre-emptively assert - go fuck yourself you patronising, po-faced woke cunt

Terrific article in the Times. It's a long read, so I'll put in in spoiler tags. Meghan and Harry blew the chance for royal renewal The Queen’s family seems no more prejudiced than any other in multiracial Britain so a golden opportunity has been missed to normalise diversity and change the whole toxic debate around race, argues Trevor Phillips

Jason Dunn-Shaw, sacked as a judge in 2017 for trolling the comments sections in online news articles about cases he was presiding over, has died aged 57. Bit of a flawed genius, reading between the lines.

Haha! Well I suppose that's one way to look at it. I don't think the portrayal is at all flattering though given that up until the 60s (and arguably well into the 70s), gay people were only ever portrayed on screen in three ways – the camp/femme/comical type character, the tragic/unsettled/suicidal character or the villain/evil doer. There were never any gay people portrayed in Bond up until that point – that was the first (and the last?) and it doesn't look comfortable looking back at it. They're absolutely bankrupt of any morals and are portrayed as total sneaks in the film, murdering old ladies to steal diamonds etc. I'm not sure how similar they were in Fleming's book, but regardless of whether their characterisation on screen was his invention or the studio's, it was typical of the era. This is quite a fascinating topic but it's seldom discussed, probably because people find it embarrassing/hard to look back at, but I thoroughly recommend The Celluloid Closet (wiki), a documentary which shows 100s of clips in cinema from the 1910s up to the 1990s, narrated by Lily Tomlin and featuring interviews with the likes of Tony Curtis, Harvey Fierstein, Gore Vidal, Quentin Crisp etc. Really interesting watch! On the slapping of women in the films, yes I find it uncomfy too. I personally don't believe in tampering with old films, but I imagine if the Bond films ever make it on to a streaming platform, a few of sexist remarks, face slaps and cliches will be omitted. It doesn't fundamentally alter the story but I still believe in film preservation. Cinema should try to be understood in the perspective of when it was made rather than aligning historical films with 21st century norms.

A solidly loving couple who just so happen to be gay, and ruthlessly efficient assassins - iirc they kill around a dozen people and only come undone due to a fluke in the finale. They may be a little camp (and aren't that much compared to half the folk I knew in nightclubs!), they still kill more people than most of the Connery era henchmen combined. There's also the modern reaction to the end of the Living Daylights (Bond unites with the Taliban against a rogue Soviet general, essentially) being "naïve" when all it does is shine a mirror up to the realpolitik of the time they find uncomfortable. On the other hand, scenes where Bond hits women do make me uncomfortable and Roger Moore was right to insist they cut them out.

So thought I'd take a look at who's still around from the Connery-era Bond films given that we've recently lost quite a few actors from these movies (including Sir Sean himself!) By no means a complete list but I think I've included everyone with a title credit in a major role, plus one or two uncredited notables who should be on the radar. Living actors from the Connery Bond films Sorted by oldest first, number in brackets is age they're turning in 2021. André Maranne (95) Thunderball DIED 12 APRIL 2021 David de Keyser (94) Diamonds Are Forever DIED 20 FEBRUARY 2021 Bruce Glover (89) Diamonds Are Forever Tsai Chin (88) You Only Live Twice George Roubicek (86) You Only Live Twice Ursula Andress (85) Dr. No Shirley Eaton (84) Goldfinger Luciana Paluzzi (84) Thunderball Marguerite LeWars (83) Dr. No Michael Chow (82) You Only Live Twice Akiko Wakabayashi (82) You Only Live Twice Aliza Gur (81) From Russia with Love Jill St. John (81) Diamonds Are Forever Martine Beswick (80) From Russia with Love / Thunderball (different characters) Putter Smith (80) Diamonds Are Forever Daniela Bianchi (79) From Russia with Love Mie Hama (78) You Only Live Twice Lana Wood (75) Diamonds Are Forever Trina Parks (74) Diamonds Are Forever note: haven't included Lola Larson who played "Bambi" opposite Parks' "Thumper" cos I can't find any evidence that she's alive! Ronald Rich (unknown) You Only Live Twice note: can't find his age anywhere but still alive according to Toby Hadoke on Twitter in 2020, he reported that he wrote to him in 2013 and he was in failing health then!

The radio kingmaker who made radio stars of names like Alan Jones, Mike Walsh, Ray Hadley and Stan Zemanek has died at the age of 89. John Brennan, affectionately known as Brenno, is being mourned as perhaps the most influential figure in Australian radio. He passed away suddenly at his retirement village home last night and is survived by his wife of 67 years, his two sons and three grandchildren. SC

I was never overly fussed about them or the Royal Family, If I'm honest. Now, however, I am fucking angry that they have hung us all out to dry with this notion that they have left the UK because we are racist ( yeah, like we ALL are) to live in a country that is less racist, obviously. Apart from that, she has social climbed like a fucking champ and got married to a fucking chump that thinks the mental anguish he suffered following his mums coffin through London was unique to him and not his brother. This country has its faults, lots of them but anybody that wants to trash it, like they did, and our Royal Family, OUR Royal Family, needs a swift kick in the cunt and banned from setting foot here ever again. A pair of self serving, handwringing bastards of the highest order interviewed by a journalist so piss poor that only America could have made her a multi millionaire shit show. I'm going to find a cat to kick.

A fair point about the equal ops above and... Sometimes he was funny - can't recall which country was celebrating its independence from the UK but when the Union Jack was coming down and the new national flat was being hoisted he tapped the proud president on the shoulder and said "Are you sure about this old boy?"

Not a winner but a two time nominee, and somebody I had on my watchlist for 12 years(!) but had assumed was looong dead. English sound engineer John Aldred (wiki) died on December 15th at the age of 99. Notable credits include The Italian Job, Dr. Strangelove and Mary, Queen of Scots.
