2 pointsJohn McCain died on this day 5 years ago, aged 81. - McCain was born in Panama and got US citizenship at 11 months old- due to the fact he was part of a military family. Both his father and grandfather were four-star Navy admirals, and the younger McCain graduated from the Naval Academy in 1958. - In 1965, McCain was a contestant on Jeopardy! (then in its first few seasons), and was a one-day champion. - McCain was well-known for his service in the Vietnam War, where he was taken as a POW in 1967. He would be released from captivity in 1973, and injuries given to him by his captors left him unable to lift his arms above his head. - McCain would retire from the Navy in 1981, and would be elected to the US House of Representatives the following year. In 1986, he would be elected to the US Senate, succeeding the retiring Barry Goldwater. - McCain would run for president in 2000, and placed second overall in the Republican primaries, behind George W. Bush (McCain received 244 delegates compared to Bush's 1,496). - McCain would run again in 2008, and received the nomination. He chose Sarah Palin as his running mate- though he retrospectively regretted his choice, and said that he should've picked Connecticut senator Joe Lieberman instead. - McCain was known for his disagreements with Donald Trump during his election campaign and presidency, and often criticized party-line voting that has become much more polarized and prevalent today. - In July of 2017, McCain was diagnosed with brain cancer- and he made his debut (and only appearance) on the DeathList in 2018 (spot no. 8). He died after a thirteen-month battle, and was survived (among other family members) by his then-106-year old mother (who lived to be 108).

2 pointsEnglish actor, filmmaker and entrepreneur Richard Attenborough died on this day 9 years ago, aged 90. He is best remembered for his film roles in Brighton Rock (1948), I'm All Right Jack (1959), The Great Escape (1963), The Sand Pebbles (1966), Doctor Dolittle (1967), 10 Rillington Place (1971), Jurassic Park (1993), and Miracle on 34th Street (1994). In 1952, he appeared on the West End stage, originating the role of Detective Sergeant Trotter in Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap which has since become the world's longest-running play.

2 pointsI used to open this thread thinking "I wonder if there's a health update on Tajima//Kane Tanaka or Robert Weighton." Nowadays it's more likely to be one of the following: 1. "The 3rd oldest Czechoslovakian person has died". 2. "Fusa Tatsumi is still a living corpse". 3. "Let's trigger the French by saying Calment was a fraud" Still better than most of the sports threads in my opinion

A lot of them used pseudonym and disappear after that. We don't know if some of them are still alive. I will list the 50's-60s Playmates. Red is deceased, Green is alive, Yellow is uncertain. 1 pointSlapstick, slaphead former South African leader with 21 children and a proclivity for non-consensual sex with HIV sufferers. Recently tried, successfully, the old "I'm really ill mate, let me out of prison" routine, but has been forced to return and serve the rest of his sentence. However, he will appeal this ruling, after his lawyers called it a "death sentence".

1 pointCan't get the link to work but if you go on his wife Misty McMichael's instagram there is a couple of minute long video and he appears even worse.A TV pole is obstructing part of his face but when you get a glimpse of his eyes they both appear non reactive open and up at the ceiling .Mouth is wide open like a fish looks slightly paler and waxy in it.No indication of consciousness at all. Also he looks like he is struggling to breathe even though he is ventilated. He has gotten into the hall of fame I imagine because he is very close to the end. There are cameras all in his face when he appears to be actively dying.Quite distasteful.I have seen quite a few friends and family be at the very end and the last thing I would ever have dreamt of doing would be to fill their deathbed room with cameras .I doubt he knows what's going on at all or that he will last the week out. Edit :He is only a finalist and has to wait until 2024 which Misty says will inspire him to keep going. There Is am utterly horrendous photo in the Chicago Sun Times of her facetiming her visibly gravely ill husband.I won't even post the link though as it is clearly an unresponsive man dying on the screenshot. In fact if I came across someone looking like that I would check their pulse to see if they hadnt already expired The Chicago Sun states he is battling pneumonia and about to start a second round of antibiotics but it is behind a pay wall.

1 pointAnd SUVs which have those extra bright headlights which are also mounted so high up that they blind you even more. I've said it before, but it bears repeating. SUVs are ugly, space consuming, unnecessary and just plain idiotic.
