2 pointsPepin the Short died on this day 1255 years ago, aged 54. - Pepin was the son of Charles Martel (famous for his victory at the Battle of Tours in 732), and after his death in 741, he was made the Mayor of the Palace of Neustria (effectively the king's manager). - By 751, the Frankish king (Childeric III) had virtually no power, and Pepin wrote to Pope Zachary regarding this; Zachary stated that the one who wields power should be the king, and Pepin therefore deposed King Childeric, forcing him to become a monk. In 751, Pepin would be elected the King of the Franks- becoming the first of the Carolingian dynasty. - As king, Pepin would focus on the expansion of the kingdom, and would go on a southwards conquest, completely driving the Arabs out of France and back into Spain. Pepin died while on campaign, and the kingdom was inherited by two of his sons- Carloman I and Charles (soon to be known as Charlemagne). - It is unknown how tall Pepin was in actuality- though his epithet has stood the test of time.

2 pointsDepends on your definition of "imminent"? Based off what i've heard, I'd give him anywhere from 2 weeks to 10 weeks. Can't see him making it into next year.
-
2 pointsYes but the simple fact that he’s still able to take a car at 8 months on hospice care prove that his death is not imminent. He’s not bedriden for example. Prince Philip was discharged from hospital it’s another case. Here he’s still at home and clearly really week but it doesn’t mean death at all cost. He’ll see his birthday, maybe even 2024 but I doubt it (and if he does, please, put him at nº1, we do not care about this healthy DVD). or maybe this trip will have exhausted him and he’ll die tomorrow, who knows at this point with him

2 pointsThis cunt, who I am forced to see die in suitably gory ways every 5 fucking minutes when I’m playing Scrabble. Not to mention the Z-listers telling me, in an advert, that Royal Match is great because… it has no adverts.
-
2 pointsYou could hardly even see him in the car so it's hard to know his true physical state. To me, it was reminiscent of Prince Philip's last appearance in his escort car following his release from the hospital just three weeks before his death.

1 pointSultan Selim I died on this day 503 years ago, aged 49. - Selim was the son of Sultan Bayezid II (then a prince) and his Greek concubine. - When Selim was 16, he was made the governor of Trebizond in what is now northern Turkey. This was right on the border with Safavid Iran, and Selim would defeat the Iranians several times between 1507 and 1510 when their soldiers incurred on Ottoman lands. - Selim led a coup against his father in 1512 after his brother Ahmed was named his heir, and would successfully oust him (Bayezid died of natural causes a month after his abdication). - During his reign, Selim would secretly publish poetry under the pseudonym Mahlas Selimi. - In 1514, Selim declared war against Iran to curtail the spread of Shia Islam (the Ottoman Empire was a majority Sunni Islam nation). He would manage to march to their capital of Tabriz, but did not conquer the Iranians, simply just flexing his military might as a warning to their shah, Ismail I- whom he described as a drunk. - Selim would expand Ottoman territory by defeating and annexing Mamluk Egypt in 1517. Over the next few years, he planned a conquest of the Hafsids in Libya, Tunisia and Algeria, but died before this could happen. His cause of death is debated, with theories ranging from cancer to poisoning to the plague to an infected carbuncle. He was succeeded as sultan by his son Suleiman- later known by his epithet "the Magnificent". - Selim's epithets include "the Resolute" due to his determination of expanding the Ottoman Empire, and "the Grim" as he was known for executing several of his viziers.

1 pointAmerican guitarist, songwriter, and singer Jimi Hendrix died on this day 53 years ago, aged 27. Although his mainstream career spanned only four years, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes him as "arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music."
