Yitzhak Rabin died on this day 28 years ago, aged 73. - Rabin was the son of immigrants to Israel (then under British control), whose surnames were originally "Rubitzov". Rabin would grow up to become a secular Jew. - Rabin served in World War II in the invasion of Vichy French Lebanon, and the Arab-Israeli War of 1948 against Egypt. Rabin would be made the chief of staff of the IDF in 1964, and led Israel to victory in the Six-Day War of 1967. - From there, Rabin became the Israeli ambassador to the US, and afterwards would be elected to the Knesset in 1973. - Rabin would become PM in 1974 after Golda Meir resigned, but he himself resigned in 1977 when it was discovered he maintained a foreign bank account in the United States (this was illegal without authorization). - Rabin would remain in cabinet positions during the 1980s, particularly the Minister of Defense from 1984 to 1990. - Rabin would become prime minister for the second time in the 1992 election. He would participate in the Oslo Accords that created the Palestinian National Authority. This led to mass protests from Zionist Israelis, who denounced Rabin's recognition of a Palestinian state- among the leaders of these protests was Benjamin Netanyahu. He would be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 because of his actions. - Rabin was also a reformist, expanding the private business sector and introducing universal healthcare to Israel. - Rabin would be assassinated by a far-right extremist opposed to the Oslo Accords. Shimon Peres would be made acting PM afterwards, and would be confirmed as prime minister a few weeks later.

Proper legend. Still, a fine age, and a DDP pick for my old folks team.

Rumours on the German motorsport contingent on FaceBook, that Erich Zakowski, founder and team owner of the former Zakspeed Formula 1 team has died, just shy of his 90th birthday. However, I've seen nothing from anyone I would class as an authoritative source yet. Suspect it's true but keeping an open mind.

Michael Jackson — Why -6 It's not the worst song on this list, but it's not making the final 5 so let's get rid. My mum wouldn't forgive me if I downvoted a George Michael. Currently just trying to nudge the (IMHO) decent songs up the list - most of them have already got a fair share of points. Still need to listen at least a dozen of these though.

Ah the Dean Martin celebrity roasts, I mentioned them a few years ago but folks interest died when they realised it was a TV show and not something else. Of that episode, singer Tony Orlando, poker player Gabe Kaplan and DDP cult pick comic Ruth Buzzi still alive also. I think my favourite line in those shows was by the late great Phyllis Diller speaking of Billy Graham: "he made me what I am today: alcoholic!"

Relatively unusual to get curable neurological issues to the extent mobility is affected. Treatable yes but curable less so.

Was thinking the same thing.Rantzen and Goodyear and Willis seem nailed on.Can see Michael Caine and Rupert Murdoch making it on both lists. Clint Eastwood has a good chance of making it onto both as well. Can see Toby Keith getting on the Drop 40 too. Can see Sophia Loren and Brigette Bardot getting on the Drop 40 and Deathlist also.

I went through these again as I stumbled upon a mostly unrelated article about Cuban leadership. Seems that (excluding Raul) there's 5 major old guard military/political leaders left, and a few smaller names: 1) José Ramón Machado Ventura (1930) Hardline communist who was pretty much Raul's second-in-command during Fidel's long illness. Looks ancient. 2) Osmany Cienfuegos (1931) Older brother of legendary revolutionary Camilo Cienfuegos who died in 1959. One of the revolutionary commanders who've held onto power for massive amounts of time, multiple time minister. He's slowly been retiring due to minor health issues since the 2000s but still as of 2019 was seen as one of those remaining who are more powerful than the current President (with Raul, Ventura, Menendez and Garcia Frias). Known also for his involvement in suffocating Castro opponents. 3) Ramiro Valdés Menéndez (1932) Major revolutionary commander, former interior minister (initial interior minister too), former vice PM. Probably the healthiest of the bunch. Survived a car crash this year but still around weekly making appearances and walking without any aid. 4) Guillermo García Frías (1928) Born before Che, one of the last revolutionary commanders, former head of the army and multiple-time minister. Still making appearances, owns a lot of companies in Cuba and apparently very rich. Smaller names: 5) Abelardo Colomé Ibarra (1939) Laid the foundations of State Security in 1959 as head of the Chief of the Intelligence Directorate of the Rebel Army at age 19. However his career didn't really peak until 1989 when he became Minister of the Interior until his retirement in 2015. 6) Julio Camacho Aguilera (1924-2024) First Transport Minister of Castro's cuba, later a longtime Central Committee member. Oldest revolutionary commander living. 7) Teté Puebla (1940) Castro bodyguard, "legendary" guerrilla, head of the veterans affairs office, Hero of Cuba recipient and first woman to be a general officer in Cuba. Still recently a parliament member but has made less appearances since the pandemic started. 8) Leopoldo Cintra Frías (1941) Accompanied Fidel during the revolution, later led a large unit of Cuban tanks in Angola and Ethiopia. Minister of Defence from Julio Casas Regueiro's death in 2011 to his retirement due to health issues in 2021. Sanctioned due to human rights abuses. 9) Álvaro López Miera (1943) Successor of Leopoldo Cintra Frías and current minister of the armed forces. Only 14 when he joined the 26th of July movement, might well end up the last living old guard member. He's still shaking hands with his Russian and Vietnamese counterparts and will definitely be the last revolutionary doing so. 10) Ramón Espinosa Martín (1939-2024) Old Politburo member and Hero of Cuba recipient. His granddaughter is an escort in Miami. 11) Samuel Rodiles Planas (1935) Current housing minister and post-Revolution Chief of the Police force. Nearly all now "retired" but behind the curtains quite many of these people still hold a lot of power...Raul, RVM and JRMV were all well enough to appear and stand without aid at the Jose Marti birth anniversary in January. Delio Gómez Ochoa is also one of the last living "revolutionary commanders", 94 years old but unlike the others, as far as I know never really held any political positions. Edit: Here's an image from that January event. L-R Machado Ventura, Valdes Menendez and Raul Casto.

Actually considering he was put on the end of life care basically because he was old it can be argued he was euthanised/murdered.

As he's been rumored to be in the Moscow Central Clinical Hospital with renal failure following a failed kidney transplant and many Chechen cars have been seen there during the last two days, Kremlin says there's "nothing to reveal" Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday: “We have no information on this.” “In any case, the presidential administration can hardly give out health certificates, so we have nothing to tell you here" I think there's a small possibility he's actually very ill especially as Pesky doesn't seem to completely deny it. We'll see.

True, I think they were 17+, not that I followed that case very closely. Paedo gets thrown around a lot, especially in the media. Should be reserved for people like Gary Glitter who I think was after 11 and 12 year olds.

I will admit I found him quite intriguing when he was first on the scene, but his schtick wore very thin very quickly. He was also rude to my mum once so that put me off him.
  24. 1 point
He used to call loads of random people on the show, I don't think that made him his pal. And these allegations are way way lower on the scale than Savile, who was a paedo and necrophiliac amongst other things. He doesn't have a mainstream career anymore, and his online presence will probably be fine. His promiscuous behavior was clear to anyone who listened to his shows or read his books. So unless there is something big that they are saving for round 2 then I'm not convinced this story will stick around for long. There doesn't seem to be a great deal more to say.
