Gone Pogue The tooth fairy's had a word with the Grim Reaper – Shane MacGowan has died at the age of 65. Best known as a member of the band 'Various artists', whose 1997 single 'Perfect Day' makes him a miss for my #1 Hits DDP team, he was also the frontman of 'The Pogues'. Sometimes wrongly dismissed as one-hit wonders, their many charting singles include the 1987 #2 hit 'Fairytale of New York', the 1991 #36 hit 'Fairytale of New York', the 2005 #5 hit 'Fairytale of New York', the 2006 #6 hit 'Fairytale of New York', the 2007 #4 hit 'Fairytale of New York', the 2008 #12 hit 'Fairytale of New York', the 2009 #12 hit 'Fairytale of New York', the 2010 #17 hit 'Fairytale of New York', the 2011 #13 hit 'Fairytale of New York', the 2012 #12 hit 'Fairytale of New York', the 2013 #14 hit 'Fairytale of New York', the 2014 #11 hit 'Fairytale of New York', the 2015 #13 hit 'Fairytale of New York', the 2016 #15 hit 'Fairytale of New York', the 2017 #5 hit 'Fairytale of New York', the 2018 #4 hit 'Fairytale of New York', the 2019 #4 hit 'Fairytale of New York', the 2020 #4 hit 'Fairytale of New York', the 2021 #4 hit 'Fairytale of New York', the 2022 #9 hit 'Fairytale of New York', and the 2023 #TBC hit 'Fairytale of New York'. One of their hits, 'Fairytale of New York', has caused controversy over the years, as the notorious Kirsty MacColl lyric, "you're cheap and you're haggard", was censored out of respect for MacGowan's physical state. Unfortunately, the replacement line, a non-sequitur denunciation of poor-quality meatballs, proved even more inflammatory. The annual culture war has sadly tainted the song for me, as a proud member of the maggot community. Long popular with casual deadpoolers for his hard-living, dentist-upsetting lifestyle, MacGowan became of more interest to serious death connoisseurs (and nervous Inverse Dead Pool players) during this year's 11-month hospital stay, as his wife tantalised our draft teams with photos of him lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed. Unfortunately, he couldn't hold out long enough to be elected Jimmy Carter's vice president in the 2024 Drop Forty. In accordance with 'Fairytale of New York' tradition, he was taken home, given his last rites, and peacefully run over by a speedboat, surrounded by family and friends. Stiff competition for which player is worst off, but it's checkmate for @En Passant – he chose Shane as his king, and gains a full 25 points. Even worse, it's the end of @tracy's legendary pointless run, with a gain of... 1 point, and a fall from 1st to... still 1st. But it would be quicker to just congratulate the 11 of you who didn't pick him: @theoldlady (turns out this is a place for the old), @YoungWillz, @Wormfarmer, @MariNisia, @CalebH, @TheSpinosaurus (now why doesn't that tag work... oh, they changed their name to @The Immortal), @Sean, who jumps from 25th to 9th; @CaptainChorizo, who jumps from 19th to 8th; @diego and @Perhaps, who jump from joint 8th to joint 3rd; and @LizLemon, who jumps on the spot, from 2nd to... still 2nd. Oh go on then, how I'd do it, as it stands. DL2024 KEEP Dick Van Dyke, Alan Greenspan, Nigel Starmer-Smith, Jimmy Carter, Dick Cheney, Mel Brooks, Jacques Delors, Robert Wagner, Norman Tebbit, Sandy Gall, Joanne Woodward, Ethel Kennedy, Stanley Baxter, Jean Marie le Pen, Cleo Laine, Pru Scales, Yoko Ono, Robert Duvall, Imelda Marcos, Pete Murray, Bob Newhart, Willie Nelson, Dennis Skinner, Sonny Rollins, Linda Nolan. REMOVE Desmond Morris, Alan Alda, Marianne Faithfull, Angie Dickinson, Khamenei, Hal Linden, Andy Taylor RETURNEES Douglas Hurd (old and frail), Noam Chomsky (apparently very ill), James Whale (cancer well noted), David Attenborough (ancient, A list, and shouldn't be off the list), Shannen Doherty (bad mix of cancer metastases), Denis Law (ill and unusually quiet) tbh if Ozzy or Liza returned I'd rather axe Cleo Laine or Sandy Gall than take a spot from a newcomer. Too many decent picks out there. NEWCOMERS June Spencer, Glynis Johns (ancient and frail), David Graham (very frail and ancient, stroke complications), Jim Lovell, Patricia Routledge (A list and in care home now), Gene Hackman, Clint Eastwood (both 94 and too big to miss), Rupert Murdoch (sudden retirement puts him in frame imo), Brian Blessed (big guy, old and just bereaved, bad combo), Pope Francis (on his way out imo), Roberta Flack (terminally ill A lister), Tom Baker (legend, frail), Bruce Willis (huge star, very ill, 50/50 to go in 2024), Franz Beckenbauer (massive football name, allegedly very ill), Patrick Murray (terminally ill sitcom star), Esther Rantzen (terminally ill UK household name and pest), Joe Bugner (big name boxer, very ill, a very DL name), Sly Stone (music legend, very poor health), Sam Neill (big star with cancer) I chose between Glynis Johns and Eva Marie Saint, David Graham and William Russell, Jim Lovell and Buzz Aldrin, Franz Beckenbauer and Mario Zagallo (Zagallo iller but Beckenbauer seems more DL Cmme friendly) and there was just no room for Frank Field or Michael Aspel. I dont see them going for Toby Keith, Louis Van Gaal, Janey Godley etc etc.

Andy Cameron is 83. Which makes him a warlock for a Scotsman to live that long.

Christian Wiman, US poet has been fighting a rare cancer for 18 years: https://www.tpr.org/2023-12-13/after-18-years-living-with-cancer-a-poet-offers-fifty-entries-against-despair https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Wiman He's currently in remission, but in such a long battle, cancer usually eventually wins.

The person who provided this statement referred only to “The Defendant” without confirming who it was. That’s why it’s still a neutral pronoun.

I assume Carter will take the number one spot if he makes 2024?
  13. 1 point
Well, to replace these 8 picks, I suggest : Noam Chomsky, Denis Law, Shannen Doherty, Bruce Willis, Brigitte Bardot, Daniel Barenboim, Ethel Kennedy and Clint Eastwood

Yeah. She can't do the Marge voice at all anymore. It's clearly gotten much worse than it was before. Not that I think she is dying I just think she clearly can't do the show anymore.

I plan to add him to my list of Deadpools for 2024, by the way 2024 will have +1 more day of possibilities since it is a leap year

I dont know man, she seemed pretty hyped for her 100th birthday up to 3 weeks before she died and we're 2 years from that mark for Dick van Dyke. Also dont forget thats its mostly heart disease that usually gets very old men that are still fit, like Prince Philip or almost Dr Mahathir of Malaysia.

It wasn’t really a wish per se; I was just thinking of the mental anguish she would go through of being retold of her husbands death day in and day out. Lesser of the two even though I can’t imagine the sense of loss Jimmy is feeling right now. 77 years of marriage. That is one for the ages.

And, like Barbara Bush and 11 others First Ladies, she died before her husband.

Out of the pages vandalized by this cunt, Piper Laurie, Phyllis Coates and Mark Goddard have died in recent days. Carroll Baker should really go for a check-up.

As well as playing Catherine in Twin Peaks, she also, quite brilliantly, played Mr Tojamura as well.

Well...the alternative would be a wall-to-wall Islamic overtaking of anything subject to critical opinion. I'm wondering if this will impact refereeing decisions in the Quatar World Cup

He now has one, I made a thread for him, last year. Should be added.
