4 pointsThe finale of Inside No.9 aired about half an hour ago and it brought back a lot of cast members from its 9 season run, of the older cast there were, in my opinion, 4 notable absences to potentially keep an eye on. 1. Sir Derek Jacobi - Only actor other than Steve and Reece to be in two separate episodes, most likely just too busy. 2. Timothy West - Appeared in the very first episode but wasn't featured in the ensemble from that episode or in the crowd, potentially retired from acting. 3. Julian Glover - Appeared in a season 6 episode, maybe he was too busy but according to IMDb he doesn't seem to have a lot on. 4. Stephanie Cole - Was the main guest star of the live episode in 2018, I would put money on her having been invited, probably the one I'm most worried about.

3 pointsYou think the public, who've seen this country dismantled piece by piece since 2010, are expecting Labour to fix it inside 12 months? If that's the case they deserve all the misery they get. Starmer's whole pitch has been it's going to take time, at least a Parliament, probably 2. And even I'm not sure how there are any quick fixes to this. And we really need to start having grown-up conversations about the future of this country, rather than knee-jerk reactionary responses to realistic issues we face, whether that be immigration, climate change, the NHS or taxation. As for where we end up in such a scenario? Simple, we end up with a form of proportional representation and follow the same coalition model the rest of the world has already discovered. No more Labour or Tory governments, instead we have the rainbow coalitions of Lab-Lib-Green or Tory-Lib-Reform or whatever other parties start to get a foothold in such a brave new world. I do not see how Farage and Reform earn a majority under a First Past the Post system, regardless of Europe's move to the right. The Tories and Reform could merge, but the One Nationers nationwide are not going to vote for Farage. Maybe the great Liberal revival will emerge. It is worth noting that while some of this is novel, plenty of it is not new. Nick Robinson on the Today podcast quoted some figures about trust in politics: people were asked whether politicians were out for themselves, their party or their country. A third of people said politicians were out for their country, half of them said politicians were out for themselves or their party. Sound familiar? That poll was conducted in 1944, during World War Two when Churchill was Prime Minister heading a National Government. The people have never trusted politicians.

2 pointsMy old post had Peter Angelos, Lowell Weicker, Chris Haughey, Harvey Carignan, Walt Brown, and Barthe DeClements. I guess it needs some replenishing, given it's three quarters dead. For some common DL names that haven't been brought up in this thread, I think by this point, Peter Max and Donald Sterling are certainly notable enough to be immortals by now. Max is pretty close to Joanne Woodward territory with his Alzheimer's (and he's seven years younger, who knows how long he could truck on), and Donald Sterling has had Alzheimer's for a decade at this point, in addition to his previous prostate cancer. I'd also toss Larry Merchant out there, given it appears he's bounced back from his vertigo-induced critical condition hospitalization. My more niche overdue guys: Vikki Dougan: Hermit estranged from her daughters who lives in a small apartment and sleeps on a pullout couch. Had some form of cancer in her 50s and has suffered from pneumonia in the past. Was supposed to attend an autograph signing last fall but was ultimately a no-show, ostensibly due to poor health but, honestly, I'd buy if she just didn't care enough to go, given she's supposedly in her apartment 24/7 anyway. Frank Layden: Easily one of the fattest celebrities to have ever become a nonagenarian (he was north of 330 pounds until his mid-60s, when John McSherry's death spooked him into shedding some weight). Not doing too badly all things considered, but he's still quite frail and has a nasal cannula. George Cabot Lodge: One of the handful of 1960s US Senate nominees still around. In his case, he was the GOP's nominee to for JFK's seat after he was elected President, so he's a somewhat interesting minor historical figure. There's some speculation in recent years that he's not doing so great; he wrote a handful of political articles every year up until 2017, when he went silent sans explanation, and then all of his papers were donated to Harvard. I only mention him because I first heard this stuff like five years ago and figured he'd be dead soon, but he's 97 next month, so he's logging some pretty solid overtime. Rocky Colavito: Pretty impressed this guy made 90 as he's taken quite a beating healthwise. Diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1992, had a massive heart attack in 2003 that required quadruple bypass surgery. Developed type 2 diabetes at some point and had his leg amputated in 2015. Seeing as how he appeared to collect a new ailment every decade or so, who knows what 2025 will have in store for him. Frank Baker: This guy (the former Yankees and Orioles shortstop) isn't particularly notable in terms of health, but because he doesn't have any mentions on here, I'll make him the honorable mention: he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2018 and given a 4%-8% chance to live, so the fact he's still kicking is pretty impressive given he was 72 when diagnosed.

2 pointsThe question is can he outlive them all? Blumenthal is 98, Marshall almost 96, and Califano is 93. It would be absolutely astounding if he managed it, but it’s within the realm of possibility.

2 pointsJohnny Macknowski died back in April, aged 101. Announcement by family here (EU blocked). Picked on some pools on here. Think this means that Herb Wilkinson (wiki), 100, is now the oldest living BAA (the former NBA) basketball player.

2 pointsDetailed report on his illness from his wife. English, shorter version here. Important parts: - Chomsky is currently hospitalized in Brazil, his wife's native country. - He suffered a massive stroke in Arizona in June 2023 and was first treated at a local hospital. After regaining consciousness his wife took him to Brazil by air ambulance with two nurses. The trip is described as "long, painful and stressful", had to make two stops and he was admitted to ICU when he arrived. - He is now out of ICU, but visited daily by a neurologist, speech therapist and a lung specialist. The right side of his body is numb. - "Has difficulty speaking", seemingly the only example given of him communicating is that he can raise his left arm. However, she claims he reads the New York Times every day.

1 pointHe was a Film Roman VP for four-five years, that isn't generally the type of thing that people scramble to write obits for. He worked under Lolee Aries, who also had two more Emmys than him (and a Wiki page), and her death got nothing outside of Facebook.
