4 pointsCompleted the annual form study at A New Day over the weekend, roster packed with obitable talent many in the "no shit!, I didn't know they were still alive" category. Thankfully not much to report, ageing legends largely turning in legendary performances. The Sweet remain as muscular as ever since Andy Scott turned them into the rock band he always assumed they were. There have been social media posts saying he is doing well considering he's ill, which I'm assuming is the ongoing prostate cancer battle. Stories ahead of time were it's - literally - the end of the road for Hawkwind with Dave Brock (83 tomorrow) having been diagnosed with a heart condition that - apparently - makes future tours with himself in the line up uninsurable. That said, there's a hold-the-date alert on their website for next Easter, so maybe he'll continue into one-off gigs, or summat. Hawkwind, frankly, were at their current cosmic best closing out Saturday and there were no momentous "well, that's it" kind of announcements from the stage when they finished. Frankly, nowt to compare with the "fuck me, that's Chris Farlowe" moment a couple of years back as an old man stumbled around the stage, taking a chair between his vocals. Sonja Kristina's (Curved Air) voice has seen better days and she seated herself on the drum riser during instrumental breaks, but that's hardly a full scale health crisis. 3 pointsAnother recommendation from BBC iPlayer, for those who can get it. Cold Comfort Farm This is a lighthearted comic film, based on the 1930s novel by Stella Gibbons which was a parody of the breathless rural romance novels of the day. Flora Poste, a young woman left homeless after the deaths of her parents, goes to stay with her relatives the Starkadder family at the grim Cold Comfort Farm in darkest Sussex. She sets about transforming the lives of the inhabitants and the fortunes of the farm. A feelgood film that's not to be taken too seriously. Stellar cast includes Ian McKellen, Eileen Atkins, Rufus Sewell, Freddie Jones, Stephen Fry, Kate Beckinsale as Flora and Joanna Lumley as Flora's bra-collecting best friend. My problem with Titanic was that the real stories were better than the fictional one invented for the film. The effects were excellent, but I'd still far rather watch A Night To Remember.

2 pointsHello There and Welcome, or Welcome Back to those returning, to the fourth round of the Crazy Eight Dead Pool! This pool is a lot like the Midsummer and Advent pools in that every entrant may choose only one pick, but the winner will be he/she/they who predicts the Eighth death, not the first, so folks with only 24/48 hours to live may not be the best choice here. Credit for this pool's creation goes to GuyFromFuture, I am merely the host. The Official Rules: 1. Entrants will have 24 hours to submit an entry, declared in this thread, as opposed to by PM. 1 entry per person. 2. Entries open on 19th August 2024 at 00:00 BST. First come, first served. 3. No two players can pick the same person. 4a. Banned picks include death row inmates (unless sentenced to death after being picked), FFBI, people under the age of 18, and all of the usual no-go areas. Death row inmates, FFBI, people under the age of 18, etc. are eligible to enter as a participant, however. 4b. I am aware that some pools class supercentenarians as FFBI, because they are famous solely due to their age, but that is not the case in this pool, and so they are perfectly eligible to be picked. 5. The QO standards remain fairly low, as long as they are definitely dead, and an obituary, as opposed to a death notice or a social media post, has been published, the hit will be counted. The only exception to this rule is, like last time, legacy.com remains a non-QO source. 6. For legal reasons, killing your or others' picks to speed up the pace of the game or to win is not advised. 7a. Hit placement is determined by date of death, as opposed to date of death announcement. However, in the instance that two entries die on the day of the eighth death, whichever death is reported first shall be counted first. 7b. In the case that a specific date of death cannot be determined, the date said death is announced shall take its place. 7c. James C. Floyd Memorial Closing of a Loophole: If a date of death cannot be established, but it is clear that the person in question died before the start of the game, the pick is disqualified and will not count as one of the eight hits. If this is discovered within the first week of the competition, I will allow the player to choose a new candidate, but after this point no such opportunity will be available. If anyone has any suggestions for additions/amendments to the rules, please feel free to say so. The same goes for any questions, should they be prompted. Hall of Fame: 2022-2023: MortalCaso (Ted Kaczynski). 2023: Yvonne (Joss Ackland). 2023-2024: The Daredevil (Alain Delon). Credit for the logo goes to Perhaps.

2 pointsThats awful!! I once read an article (I dont remember where) that he had no problem with homosexuality or homosexuals

2 pointsDid not realise he was a big backer of Jean-Marie Le Pen, as detailed in his Times obituary. France stands out by having A listers (or at least A listers of yesterday) back such causes. Delon, Bardot, Depardieu. Just doesn’t happen in the US/UK. Would signal the end of an acting career.

2 pointsCarter, on his deathbed, solely hanging on just to vote in November (even though he wont be alive to benefit from whoever gets in): - Too weak and frail to do anything - Does whatever he can to keep himself alive (brain stimulation, praying, good mental attitude etc) - Does this continuously - Reaches 100th birthday, too old to even properly celebrate it. Probably wont want himself on camera over how old he is by then. - A month later, the time has come for him to vote - Results come in, Trump has won (betting odds atm have him the most likely winner) - Jimmy "Oh no!" *Dies of disappointment*

1 pointI’m absolutely shocked ! I thought that he would celebrate his 89th birthday while his health was declining ! Finally he died as the same age as Belmondo died in 2021. 2024 is really a dark year for French cinema…and the year is even not finished yet !

1 pointThe relay races are great. Lovely to see people rewarded who were disappointed in their individual races. Did I hear right, they were the only ones who weren't twins? ! not even sisters. That put them at a disadvantage from the start! Talking of twins, only just realised that there are two Nielsens who are identical twins. Lina and Laviai.

1 pointOr 1941 or 1946 or 1950, in descending order of probability. That last date would have her alongside April Ashley as a denizen of Paris' drag underworld when she was 10. When she grins she really looks like a bloke.

1 pointIn France, no surname particle belongs to the surname since the Revolution. Philippe de Gaulle is in fact Gaulle, Philippe de. It’s a real nightmare for bibliography trust me. I don’t think it’s the Same with De Niro in which De is part of the full surname. That can explain it.
