HARE’S DEATH POOL 2025 – 12th Edition With the 11th edition of this much-loved pool meandering aimlessly to a conclusion, it’s time to generate a bit of pre-Christmas excitement by officially launching the 2025 edition. The pool has grown steadily in numbers over the past few years, and I will be aiming to top last year’s record of 63 entries. Thanks to you all for playing, and hopefully we will see most of you back again next year (even Chel’s obscure Russians). (I have just realized that this is my 5th year of running this damn thing - I really, really do need to get a life). A few deadpool regulars sat it out in the last year or two. Hopefully we might see some of them back again this year as I know that we will also be losing some more stalwarts of this game, and of deadpooling in general. New participants are especially welcome, and I will aim again not to be (too) rude to you. It’s a very easy pool to enter - just gather together 25 names and send them in. No further work needed after that. Add a few names to your DDP team, and you are there. Divide your Numbers team in half and, bingo, you’ve got a Hares team! If you are worried about a QO in other pools, no need to panic - this is the place for them (although you may want to avoid the really quirky local-fame types – it’s amazing how local rags tend to forget about them once they actually snuff it). Your picks just have to die, and they have to take their bloody time about doing it. The rules are published below, and they haven’t changed. Most of you know them by now – no cancer-mums, no family members, and no scumbag criminals. The requirement for a proper obit stays the same, although as is traditional, it will be the lowest of low bars on QOs. I ask this every year, and to be fair, you have mostly all been very obliging. But I will ask again – could players please take heed of the following request for formatting your team before entry. It makes my Christmas and January a lot easier if I don’t have to spent ages re-writing lists and deleting numbers. SEND YOUR TEAM TO ME BY PM, OR POST IT UP ON THIS THREAD. NO OTHER METHODS OF ENTRY ARE ACCEPTED. · List picks in alphabetical order of FIRST name. I realise that I am the only host who asks this and I don’t care. I am a special, unique individual. · Put names in Capital letters. · Do not put numbers in front of the name. This is the worst of all, as I cannot get a spreadsheet to remove them automatically. But please do count them to make sure that there are actually 25 of them – it’s not that difficult. · Put description in brackets after name, only if they are really obscure or likely to be easily confused with another celebrity. Trust me- I know who Jimmy Carter is. · Mark one pick as a Joker (or wildcard- I don’t care what you call them) I will accept entries that are not in this format. But I won’t be happy about it, and I’m generally not a very happy bunny (or tortoise?). Best of luck to you all.

Britain's "oldest living man" Haji Ghulam Mohammed dies just days before his 110th birthday. Also a WWII veteran. His age wasn't verifiable, owing the the state of British India that he was born and their poor records, however I actually think he may have been a legitimate claimant and I haven't seen any scepticism online. Britain's oldest man is now Donald Rose, who will turn 110 in just over 2 weeks. He is due to be validated early in the new year!

@arghton heard the story of British super centenarian Reg Dean? Actually a fairly fascinating old guy as he'd been a war hero and then had a lengthy career in the Church of England. During WW2 he saved an old mystic's life in Mumbai and was given a life extending drink which he took despite being sceptical. Decades go on, Reg stays alive but puts it down to vegetarian life style and exercise. Retires, still lives. Reaches 100, 101, 105...still very healthy. Moves into assisted living in his late 100s, still in great health for his advanced age. Starts to get frail aged 109 but reaches 110 and publicly told the press "maybe I was wrong and that elixir was accurate and I could live to 120!" The second he publicly recanted his scepticism, his health took a rapid decline and he died weeks later!

Some good examples of people having unrealistic expectations: • Greg Norman will live to 110 with his golf orgasms. • Loretta Matheis, some minor name sketch artist claimed she'll retire at 100 and live to 110 when she was 83 in 2017. Still alive? God knows. • Dalai Lama/Tenzin Gyatso, determined to make 110 in 2023. Aren't you eternal? Anyways, that was a downgrade from 2019, when he said he'll live to 113. • Juan Ponce Enrile hopes to reach 110. For a drol immortal he has a suprisingly realistic approach on mortality. • Gladys D'Souza, an Indian woman from Mangaluru, claimed she'll live to 110 at 100. She died a year later. • Ketut Liyer, Bali medicine man claimed many times that he would live to 110. Anyways, that didn't happen as he died back in 2016 at around 102. • Wilbur Glenn Voliva - Was sure he'd live to 120 due to his diet of buttermilk and brazilian nuts. Died at 72. • Berlusconi playfully boasted about living to 120 in 2011... • Prajedes Morales from Albuquerque claims he'll live to 130. • Aleksandr Bogomolets - Stalin's longevity guru. He claimed his serum would've helped people to live to 140+, but he died at 65. • Aussie woman Margharita Vitanza, 105, said she'll live to 150 back in 2016. Died a bit before her 106th. • Keith Richards has also claimed he'll make it to 150, back in 2007. He does now have a better chance to get there than that Aussie woman.

Just a couple days later, Randy Moss announced he is stepping away from his ESPN analyst role to deal with this health challenge. Certainly sounded like prostate cancer at first, given his message specifically to men to get regular check-ups. But now I'm seeing speculation online that it's pancreatic or liver cancer because of his yellow-ish eyes. To the non-US users here (assuming y'all don't mark this thread as read) who are probably unfamiliar -- Moss is one of the most iconic NFL players of all time. Absolutely will get QOs across the board, not that there should be any doubt given several QO outlets already covered this health situation.

I looked into him last year. He was 100% born in 1924. Here he is in 1946: His old website had photos of his father Eugene and his sister Mary, which matches the above 1930 Iowa census. In 2022, he said his father "died suddenly when I was five years old". If you take him as literally as possible, this still rules out any DOB later than 1926/1927 (Eugene C. Hartley died in April 1932). There's a birth notice for him in the Omaha World-Herald, November 9, 1924: "A son was born Thursday at the Omaha Maternity Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Hartley. Mrs. Hartley was formerly Miss Dorothy Ringwalt." If you look at those records for Ted Hartley in California, they give his date of birth as November 6, 1934, so an exact match for this birth notice... outside of the fact that it's a decade off.

Though I don’t think he’ll make the starting line I 100% think Peter Yarrow would be a great inclusion if he made it. Though they didn’t pick Mary Travers so he could get ignored anyways…

Today the King stripped 6 people of their honours. Formal announcement and full list available here. Includes: Tory peer Lord Rami Ranger (wiki), stripped of his CBE for bullying journalists and making inappropriate comments about the Pakistani community Tech businessman Lawrence Jones (wiki), stripped of his MBE after being convicted of rape (currently in prison) Hong Kong academic Lam Shiu-kum, stripped of his OBE after being jailed for misconduct in office Accountant and Hindu Council UK boss Anil Bhanot, stripped of his OBE for comments deemed to be Islamophobic Duke of Edinburgh regional director Robert Johnston, stripped of his MBE – unclear why Church leader and homeless charity boss Michael Andrea, stripped of his BEM – unclear why Prior to 2023, it was exceptionally rare to be stripped of an honour but it seems to be becoming common place now. I think it's a welcome move when it comes to criminal convictions. I'm not convinced it should be done when people make stupid comments though. Everyone's done that at some point.

The first person to win an Oscar for a Bond film, Norman Wanstall, is still alive and looking pretty good at 89. He was interviewed on Meridian Tonight (is it still called that?) to mark the 60th anniversary of Goldfinger, where he won his Oscar for sound editing.

Deadliness Is Next to Godleyness Janey Godley has died of ovarian cancer at the age of 63. Her claims to fame include a 30-year stand-up career, holding a sign that says TRUMP IS A CUNT, and dubbing Nicola Sturgeon's Covid briefings to make her threaten to stick a toe up the crack of your arse. The unexpected popularity of this niche fetish pornography resulted in the Scottish government hiring her to face a "stop the spike" campaign in 2021, exhorting people with large numbers of friends (not deadpoolers) to avoid large social gatherings. Unfortunately, this gave people more time to sit inside searching Twitter for "from:janeygodley 50 cent", and she lost her role in a Beauty and the Beast pantomime after old racist tweets resurfaced via The Daily Beast, the web's foremost news source for Beauty and the Beast-related controversies. A few months later, on the advice of her agent, she developed terminal cancer – making her a popular pick on the Derby Dead Pool – but she continued to live life to the full, touring and picking fights on Twitter – making her a popular pick on the Inverse Dead Pool. And now she's dead – making her an extremely unpopular pick on the Inverse Dead Pool. What hath Godley wrought? Our 47 Godley botherers include all 5 players who were on 0 points – @wannamaker and @The Old Crem (both now 6th place with 14 points), @MariNisia (8th with 16 points), @machotrouts (IS A CUNT), and @Pedro67 (12th with 21 points).
