In 2015 I learnt the names and constituencies on all 650 MPs, which proved rather useful for my line of work. So short have the subsequent parliaments been and so great the turnover of old > new members that all that memorising became redundant quite quickly! I can't even begin to imagine learning the names of 780+ members of the House of Lords. Think I know about 300 or so, but not through trying!

A really controversial political figure and a totally unexpected death, personally I was expecting for former president Ricardo Lagos go first, because he retired from politics a week ago... one to see in the next years. https://chile.as.com/actualidad/que-paso-con-ricardo-lagos-esta-fue-la-drastica-decision-del-ex-presidente-de-chile-n/?outputType=amp

For me this is the biggest death of the year so far (the former president of your country dying in a helicopter crash will be something hard to top). He was like the Dubya of Chile, he was gaffe-prone and the word "piñericosa" was used every time he made a stupid comment or made something silly. He was a mediocre leader imo, his first term was decent but not that good, the rescue of the 33 miners was the highlight of those 4 years, and his second term started horribly with his terrible management of the protests in 2019, although I do think he was very good controlling covid in the country. I know a lot of people hate him, but I just couldn't. Here's a compilation of Piñericosas made in 2018. You probably won't find any of these to be funny unless you know spanish (except for 6:00-7:07 which are universally funny).

The most gravely ill on the list: 1)Josip Manolic: 104 in March, bedridden and received last rites in December, seemed an imminent death. However his family insists he is well, so ok. 2)Khamtai Siphandone: 100 in two days, unable to appear for his birthday, whose celebrations have been ongoing for six months. Likely bedridden or even on life support. 3)Jimmy Carter: 100 in October, almost a whole year in hospice care. 4)Ali Hassan Mwinyi: hospitalised and family asking for prayers. Still, it seems not too serious. 5)Violeta Chamorro: soon 95, airlifted to Costa Rica last year, recordwoman of dementia and brain tumors. One of those five is really really overdue.

Dropped him from the DDp because tbh I got bored and distracted by shiny new oldies, and 20 places isn't a lot. My trying to guess who would be picked has led to two of us bringing back Nadim Sawalha after a long absence and nobody picking Brian Glanville. Or Derry Irvine!

Indian politician and independence activist P. Narsa Reddy dead at 92. I think there might be only 7 Indian independence activists left with Wikipedia pages, correct me if I'm wrong - ages 96 to 100: 1 - VS Achuthanandan (1923) Severely ailing for the last 5 years. One of Drol's top immortals. 2 - LK Advani (1927) Co-founder of ruling party BJP and former deputy prime minister. Not a DDP pick, but I think there's a decent chance he'll obit. 3 - Krishnammal Jagannathan (1926) Social activist. Seems to suffer from Parkinson's or something similar. 4 - Ramjee Singh (1927) Gandhian activist and former Member of Parliament. 5 - Shobhana Ranade (1924) Social worker, Gandhian. 6 - Sailesh Kumar Bandopadhyay (1926-2016) Activist, "close associate of Gandhi" 7 - V. P. Appukutta Poduval (1923) "Gandhian since 1934". Interesting eyewitness/relic of Indian history. Satya Narayan Gourisaria possibly died in 2019 and Shanta Vasisht might be dead too. Edit: Sailesh Kumar Bandhopadhyay seems to be dead too, referred to on facebook as "late" and there are some Bangla posts from 2016 saying he's dead. Also marked to have died on the Bangla wiki. That makes 6.

With Scotland at the Euros for the first time since 1996, Former Scottish manager Craig Brown's getting a lot of reappraisal in documentaries this week and looked quite old and a bit frail tbh. Apparently he had an aortic aneurysm last year and is lucky to still be with us. One to watch, now. Aberdeen and Scotland hero Craig Brown reveals he had 30-percent chance of survival after an aneurysm (thescottishsun.co.uk) (Btw, alcoholic George Burley in the mention above still lives.)
