But there will no doubt be some sad news soon to balance this.

Three strikes and you're out... First strike was Ronald Reagan. Second strike was George Bush Jr. Third strike was Donald Trump. The American government will lose the ability to act strategically. Not necessarily militarily, but when it comes to climate change, poverty, infrastructure measures, and so on. National interest will be replaced with a thousand seperate corporate interests. Every era ends. The American era ended with Obama.

Well, remember George Burns back in the day. Roughly: "Every morning I read the obituaries in the morning papers. If I'm not in them, I relax and have breakfast."

We have a new provisional leader! Someone well known to the forum. 11 names from this years top 100 have now bettered their 2017 tally already.

I think the above is becoming pertinent. I think the opening for entries for next year normally happens around this week. I'm finalising my teams and would like to get them in before the festive. Not terribly urgent for me (I normally punt the teams in around mid-December) but if folk like Phantom of the Midway are off on holiday or away, the situation might be a little more keen, especially if there are to be changes to the rules. Anyway, good luck to TMIB in his last few weeks and to Spade who has to deal with the forthcoming deluge....

John McCririck looks very unwell, painfully thin these days and very pale complexion. Looks like he has cancer to me. I think he’d be a good pick for 2018.

That inspired me to look back at my own first DDP team, ten years ago. Today there are three survivors: Meat Loaf, John McCririck and the present Duke of Marlborough (then the Marquess of Blandford).

I think the suggestions are not so bad. but I also agree that these are probably not deathlisty enough, beside of Ecclestone oder Prince Henrik. Klaus von Donhany is in my opinion one of the best known and smartest politicians in Germany. He was Mayor of Hamburg and Minister of Education. But his reputation in the UK or USA is probably as high as that of a Gord Downie or Erroll Christie in Germany

I remember picking Peter Hall for this last year...so off the radar, blah blah blah. Although I didn't win, suddenly he appeared on a host of DP teams...and did go within the year. Newhart is just a feeling (cue Bad Manners post), just like Hall was last year. But who knows? I'm not out to win, I'm out to see what happens...

Here is what I think about definitive picks: 1)King Michael: three weeks ago we all believed he was fucked. Though he is still with us he has a great probability of dying before 2018, anyway it does not seem imminent anymore. I'd say he has very good chances. 2)Bob Newhart. Only old and not so much. It would be an incredibly lucky strike to score with him. Very little chances 3)Rabbi Einhorn. Cranky old, but not much more. I'd say little/normal chances, but knowing Spade he'll be dead by tomorrow. 4)Wilson Harris: Incredibly old, but no known illnesses. Lucky strike needed here. Little chances. 5)Ami Brown: She was on her deathbed a month ago. Her hour must be very near. Excellent chances. 6)Carol Channing: Old good health sufferer. Very very lucky strike needed. Little chance. 7)Peter Overton. Oh, terminally ill from May. Very good chances 8)Lucia Hiriart. Old and fat but not in immediate danger. Seems a bit random. Very little chances. 9)Shane McGowan: Always ill but again he is not on the menu this year it seems. Little chances. 10)Nobby Stiles. Yes, he is going away and soon as he is spending his days sleeping in a nursing home for the terminally ill. Very good chances. 11)Naryan Dutt Tiwari: Old and suffered a stroke, but it has been a month since it happened. Still Good Chances. 12)Franco Zeffirelli: Ok, he is ill and old, but not so ill. He made some appearances recently so he seems to be heading for 2018. Little chances. 13)Valerie Harper: Not likely. She has cancer, but is still working. I think December is out of question. Very little chances. 14)Billy Graham. Oh, come on, he is just eternal. Little Chance. 15)Andrew Apostoli: Unknown, but very ill as I can understand. Very good/excellent chances. 16)Johnny Halliday. Very ill but seems a lock for 2018. Medium chances. 17)Leslie Phillips: Oh, he is still alive. How the hell? Medium chances- 18)Patrick Cryne: He has been terminally ill for a long time, but many already wrote his name on 2018 list. Good Chances. 19)Bill Lucas. Just old, but could be a surprise. Little Chance- 20)Leah Bracknell: From a rational point of view she is fucked, but from a yoga/ new age point of view she is perfectly fine. So only Good Chances. 21)Marsha Hunt. Only old, but still fit. Dim chances. 22)Mark E. Smith: He is clearly ill, but not on his deathbed. Discreet chances. 23)Rayya Elias: Same as Leah Bracknell. Good Chances. 24) Quen Elizabeth II. Impossible. 25)Vanessa Goodwin: Yes, really on the clock. Excellent chances. So it is between Ami Brown, Vanessa Goodwin and Andrew Apostoli. Anyone else would be a surprise, you decide if big or small.

Kate Steinle's murderer found NOT GUILTY. Jose Zarate, the man charged with the murder of Kate Steinle has been deported multiple times and according to defense "accidentally shot" Ms. Steinle. I think this verdict is ridiculous, it's not a surprise coming from California though. I don't believe in the death penalty but I certainly wouldn't have been mad if he got it. We should expect Trump to ramp up his racist rhetoric on twitter any moment now, he's been retweeting videos of muslim migrants beating up disabled dutch boys as well so we know he's in a particular mood.

World famous Israeli singer Gala Atai is really old and she should be monitered, possibly she can't have many years left. For younger posters she sold tens of millions all over the world in the 80s with songs in Hebrew and English. Her sister died of oldness in 2008

Her nick name is Gali. She turns only 64 in December. There is a Eurovision thread. And I hate tags. What a pointless thread.

Well, I'll be damned. José José has pulled a Stefan Karl - he's "cancer-free".

Let's see: missing the Queen's death would indeed be an embarassment, but she has no life-threatening health issues, so her death would be quite a shocker (well, as shocking as the death of a nonagenarian can be). Pope Francis is much younger than anyone else you mention (80), and while his one lung could be an issue, I don't think that he'd be a particularly good candidate, unless we get some new info on his worsening health. The two presidents and Benedict should stay on the list (although Carter can likely survive into 2019 if his cancer can be kept in check).
