5 pointsA little bit of housekeeping to be done on this pool. 4 teams had picked Mustafa Kayirici who didn't make the starting line. Book, Captain Chorizo, Salmon Mousse and Toast all had their 1st sub promoted. The Old Crem submitted 6 Wildcards. The last of them, Vicky Phelan, had her wildcard status revoked. The Unknown Man submitted Glynnis Johns twice. Al Jaffee, the first sub, was promoted to the team. I am going to park this pool for a little while, as I am going to spend my time sort out the scoring for the 2020 Jokers Pool before starting on this one. The two hits so far, Christos Sartzetakis and Lata Mangeshkar will remain unscored until I return to this in a month or so. In the meantime, please keep noting the hits so I have a list to work on when I get back to it. Of course just because I have not scored the hits, does not mean that there has not been points scored - this is the Jokers Pool after all. The first scoreboard of the year is on Page 1 - Congratulations to Marinisia, our early leader.

3 pointsStrangely, this comes soon after the giant panda got moved off the endangered list (to the vulnerable one, which is still to be wary of course) - partially because of their increased numbers in the wild. Turns out, contrary to internet memes, the panda will actually fuck to save its own species, it's just they're a contrarian grumpy sod. Actually, come to think of it... they've clearly worked out as a species that if they bat their big eyes and pratfall a bit, humanity on the whole will look after them from birth to death and give them a life of food and lots of play. They're cunning bastards.

Have to wonder that, along with the supercentenarians being run through, if there isn't a similar thing happening with centenarians as well? All names mentioned above have died in the last 5 days (6th Feb-10th Feb), and that's without counting names already mentioned in this thread + people without English Wikipedia pages who nonetheless got local obits

2 pointsBecause it should be posted here too. Ian McDonald, the multi-instrumentalist who was a founding member of both King Crimson and Foreigner, has died at the age of 75. https://ultimateclassicrock.com/ian-mcdonald-king-crimson-foreigner-dead/

2 pointsI wouldn't. It's likely, considering how as you said she looks a lot like the Queen Mother looked at her age. Someone on another forum actually made a comparison a couple of days ago and I'd say that she even looks better. However four years is always a long time for a nonagenarian, even a healthy one with good genes.

1 pointNikolai Manoshin, a member of the USSR squad for the 1962 World Cup - but didn't play a game - has died aged 83. https://rfs.ru/news/215256 He played plenty for Torpedo Moscow and then CSKA Moscow before embarking on a nomadic managerial career which saw him manage Somalia, Yemen and Mali while juggling numerous roles over the years at CSKA Moscow. He had eight caps for the USSR.

1 pointWhen Yes Prime Minister did its well known sketch about who reads what Newspaper, the Daily Express was not one of them, but a common joke I saw among fans was that Daily Express readers want to resurrect Diana so that she can run the country.

1 pointI expect if she gets covid as a result she'll survive it: covid has got milder over the last 2 years and she'll have had every vaccine shot she's eligible for. That said if she did pass on as a result it would be quite the downgrade from the Battle of Bosworth when it comes to heirs overthrowing the monarch.

1 pointPossible Hellstrom route to a QO if Sweden qualify for the World Cup (being held in November/December this year, remember). They're in the playoffs but, unfortunately for those who picked him, not in a group with Scotland or Wales. So they'll have to make the final 32 for any chance of his death being mentioned in a pre-tournament profile piece.

1 pointActually the word pencil is derived from penis. More specifically, tiny penis. From the OED: Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French pincel paint-brush (c1165 as peincel ; French pinceau ) < an unattested post-classical Latin form *penicellus , alteration (with suffix substitution) of classical Latin pēnicillus paint-brush, pictorial art, also a swab, pad (compare penicil n. 1) < pēniculus brush ( < pēnis tail (see penis n.) + -culus -cule suffix) + -illus (see -illa suffix).

1 pointWhatever the merits or otherwise of using Ivermectin to treat Covid (and it may have well have some effect on stimulating the immune system, even if it does nothing against the virus itself), I just find it odd/amusing that people will refuse a vaccine because they don't trust big Pharma and the vaccine isn't properly tested, but will self medicate with Ivermectin. Where the fuck do they think the ivermectin comes from - it doesn't miraculously fall out of the sky. And it obviously hasn't been fully tested against Covid. As it happens, the Ivermectin itself is likely to be safe. As Toast said earlier - it is widely used in humans across the world to treat parasites including Onchocerca which causes River Blindness. For some reason, people always focus on the fact that these drugs are used in veterinary medicine, despite the fact that most drugs are used in both humans and animals. A classic example is when people taking ketamine for recreational purposes are described as taking "horse tranquilisers", despite the fact that ketamine is commonly used in human anaesthesia. Anyhow, it's a win-win for Laurence Fox. Once he gets over the Covid-19 (as he probably will, since he is a relatively young fit healthy person), he can continue to be smug about how he knows more than the "experts" out there, while also no longer having an itchy arse.
