British spy-fiction author turns 93 today. Hugely popular figure in the UK. Definitely worthy of a thread and of attention by the DL committee, surprised he hasn’t yet been on the DL, he really should be considered for 2023.

I would say The Ipcress File, which was made into film in 1965, starring Michael Caine.

Obituary as confirmation. From the U.S. Army/Navy/Air Force/Coast Guard etc., there seems to be just three "high ranking" officials left who were born in the 1910s: Harry E. Goldsworthy (wiki, b. 1914), Ronald R. Van Stockum (wiki, b. 1916), William A. Jenkins (wiki, b. 1917). Goldsworthy 108 in April and still pretty active. I reckon he'll outlive Roberta McCain and become a bit of a DL legend within time.

Unless he is selected for the main list he could be discussed in the Authors thread.

As with most recently-created threads, it's not his age or fame or DL suitability that's the issue, it's the fact that there will be no news about him till he dies. Really, just another excuse for the DL equivalent of vanity publishing - look at meee, I started a topic!! Oh yeah, well fuck off, mate. It reminds me of the Bergman and Salinger threads already.

According to Kirstie Allsopp, you should now be able to buy a house outright, so congratulations on your financial acumen!

The clubhouse wasn't really a golf player, should it even be in this thread? It was a centenarian however...

I hope so but at that age… you never know… you could go anytime from a bad fall or something else… I mean… he’s 56 after all ! Reaching 66 seems quite optimistic… I think she’ll have to celebrate it alone sadly… but she’ll still be quite young and will have a lot of time to find true love again

Just another 277 years to go (possibly longer if prices rise at all).

FTFY People crying about wood houses should have listened to the Three Little Pigs story aged three and learned from it. This is absolutely hilarious. No lives lost. Golfing / rich / American wankers slightly putt-out. Tremendous.

Be fair, this is about his experience. Politics is bound to be in his mind, and whilst it’s pretty likely I’ll find his observations both enlightening and agreeable, I’m glad it kept out of the TV series. And I’m glad the, as you put it, “gay storyline” did feature. Again, he’s telling his story, and it didn’t get in the way in the slightest. Also, it’s not so much about his sexuality as it is about portraying how difficult a personal and social life can be when you’re in a traumatic job for almost every waking hour.

From the name, I assumed "Candy Bomber" Gail Halvorsen was a roller derby icon, but apparently it was some brer who gave chocolate bars to German children after WW2. Don't they know we're in an obesity epidemic? His passing sees Pop_Zeus put YoungWillz in the rearview and Predictor break the deadlock against Great Uncle Bulgaria. LizLemon 0 v. Arthur Giron, a playwright whose best known work is probably Edith Stein and who wrote for some episodes of Ryan's Hope for TV, reportedly dead aged 85: https://www.broadwayworld.com/article/Playwright-Arthur-Giron-Dies-at-85-20220217 IBDB: https://www.ibdb.com/broadway-cast-staff/arthur-giron-500427

It's probably fair on deadline day to mention who won the "penalties" - I didn't originally until someone (Torva?) sent me a team after they'd lost a decider. But then of course you fall foul of the scenario bound to happen one day - someone doesn't put a team in, then of course one of their side are announced dead at 2 minutes to midnight. No match that ever needed a draw decider with 24 hours to go was settled by a late pick. Though one time Pedro lost a decider and still advanced because he put a team in and his winning opponent didn't!

I'd say that proves I was prescient but all it really proves is that I've been hanging hereabouts for a fuck of a long time!

I think that more and more names will pop up until they're all dead. Lepik was as far as I know the last living notable SS member for something else than being an SS member and there seem to be very few of those mentioned in this thread who are definitely still alive. Recap of the findings, deaths, news, etc of the year: Ulo Lepik, Kurt Gosdek, Hilde Michnia, Veikko Kasslin, Wilhelm Karl Friedrich Hoffmeister, Helmut Oberlander, Gerhard Sommer, Alfred Stork and Friedrich Karl Berger are dead. And also Johann Robert Riss, if he's this man: https://www.trauer-im-allgaeu.de/traueranzeige/johann-riss From the Final Account: Hans Werk, Kurt Sametreiter, Hermann Franz Ferdinand Knoth and Karl Hollander are dead. Helma Maaß/Kissner, Aksel Andersen, Helmut Leif Rasmussen/Rasboel and Harry Paul Fritz Schultz could be dead. As well as the ones mentioned above. Also not sure about the Final Account SS names Herbert Fuchs, Karl-Heinz Lipok, Otto Duscheleit and Klaus Kleinau. The ones definitely still alive: Irmgard Furchner, Josef Schutz, Herbert Wahler, Jacob Luitjens and Bruno Dey. Also two Finnish SS volunteers are still alive, names not known yet.
