Sally Ride died on this day 11 years ago, aged 61. - In her childhood, Ride was an avid tennis player, but decided to major in physics once she went to college thanks to one of her private school teachers. - Ride applied to join NASA as a mission specialist in 1977, and was one of 35 selected the following year. - In 1982, Ride was chosen as a mission specialist for the STS-7 mission, and when it was launched on June 18, 1983, she became the first female American in space. At 32, she was also the youngest American astronaut. These achievements made her a celebrity once she returned to Earth. - Ride would also be picked for the STS-41-G mission in 1984, and was planned to be on the STS-61-I mission in 1986, but this was cancelled following the Challenger disaster. - Following said disaster, Ride would be appointed to the committee that investigated what caused the explosion, and she would also be a member of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board in 2003. - Ride retired from NASA in 1987, and became a physics professor at UC San Diego in 1989, where she would remain until 2007. - Ride died after a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer, which she kept private. It was revealed that she was in a relationship with science writer Tam O'Shaughnessy since 1985- posthumously making her the first lesbian astronaut.

Is there any evidence of a more sedentary lifestyle contributing to a longer lifespan for SCs i.e. “conserving energy” rather than using it up? My twin sister Fusa could do a friggin triathlon if she wanted to but she prefers to stay in bed half dead

Vince Hill reported dead by the great Jimmy Cricket: Easy listening, his chart career was technically dead with the advent of glam rock. A DDP pick. Edit: I'm sure he probably has a 60s entry as well as the 70s entry above @Ulitzer95.

After conducting an extensive search through the forums, I was surprised to discover that David Jason did not yet have his own thread. Although he doesn't appear to suffer from any known illnesses, I would argue that as one Of Britain's most famous TV actors, the "only Fools and Horses" deserves his own thread. Especially with the recent passing of John Challis, it just appears that his generation is beginning to disappear.

Strangely, an update in Tupac's murder. This always just seemed like a case they never wanted to "solve" completely. We've long known who the likely suspect was, as Tupac jumped a young Crip gang member at the MGM Casino earlier that night and he was in the car the bullets came from. He was murdered two years later: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orlando_Anderson There were three other men in the car; two are dead, the third is Orlando's uncle: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duane_Davis_(gangster) He's been doing interviews for years that indicate them in the shooting. No charges though. But then earlier this week, a raid on the uncle's wife's home: https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/video-shows-dramatic-face-off-181103183.html SWAT tanks all rolled up. Seizing a desktop computer, a laptop, a cell phone, a hard drive, a Vibe magazine that featured a story on Tupac, marijuana, .40-caliber bullets, tubs full of photos, 40 ink cartridges, and a copy of Keefe D’s 2019 book, “Compton Street Legend,” according to the Associated Press. Grand jury reviewing the evidence; indictment likely soon. It seems strange they're suddenly interested in this guy as they've always known. The solving of this murder also likely provides evidence to solve Biggie's.

Burt Bacharach, Harry Belafonte and now Tony Bennett. It's been a bad year to be a nonagenarian musician with a last name beginning with B. Also means 6/9 of the hits so far this year have been music related people.

His current wig is something to behold, possibly even more ridiculous than Frankie Howerd’s in his pomp. Other than that he looks well in a bbc interview about his upcoming Glasto headline appearance. His autobiography definitely made me warm to him, if not his music, the appeal of which continues to pass me by.

There's been a load of Long March, WWII vets dying since Christmas too. Only three long march vets died between July and 21 December, six between December 21 and January 17. I recall twice the normal amount of Chinese WWII vets were dying at the start of January. When Shi Ping and Feng Zigen survived (or "survived" with tubes going into them for the rest of the weeks or months they have) it, the news said they had it. In China it's only covid when you survive long enough to get discharged, otherwise it's "natural causes", "a lung infection", "illness and failed treatment" or something else.
