4 pointsThe Dictionary Deadpool Each participant must pick a 10 letter word reasonably valid in the Oxford English Dictionary and then for each letter of the word choose a ‘celebrity’ who’s first or last name matches with the corresponding letter (similar to the ABC deadpool). If your chosen word includes the same letter more than once, please choose different ‘celebrities' for each. Example - Strawberry Simon Cowell Terry Gilliam Ryan Reynolds Alan Alda William Shatner Barlow, Thelma Ewards, Huw Roberts, Eric Roberts, Julia Yuri Oganessian Scoring - Each death will be scored based on the value of the letter in the English language Scrabble so in the example above Thelma Barlow would be worth 3 points as B is worth 3 in Scrabble. There's no difference in points whether first or last name is used, however Alliterative Names, such as Alan Alda, will score double points. Unique picks are worth an extra point. Unique & Alliterative picks are worth triple points. General Rules - Entries close at midday (BST) August 4th and must be sent by private message. Usual deadpooling rules apply (have to be reasonably famous, no death row picks etc…). Make sure to clarify who you’ve chosen if necessary or else the first google result will be used. No need to pick subs, if one of your picks dies in the next week I'll PM you to ask for a replacement. I’m not particularly fussed about obituaries just as long as there’s enough proof to say they’re dead (a wikipedia edit won’t cut it but a reputable tweet might). The game will last until either someone has all ten of their picks die or until one year after starting (August 4th 2024). This is my first time creating a deadpool so if anything is unclear or you have any questions feel free to ask!

3 pointsWhen you’re in that mindset, trust me, rational reasoning and natural consideration of other people goes totally out of the window. Deepest sympathies to Sinead’s family and anyone who feels like their depression is winning.

2 pointsThere's no point in me sending my team in via private message due to over half of my picks being punts as I know nothing about football but may as well enter this pool because you never know... Anyway here's my list of 20 people I've never heard of before. Vincent Kompany - Burnley Mauricio Pochettino - Chelsea Mark Hughes - Bradford Daniel Farke - Leeds Derek Adams - Morecambe Sean Dyche - Everton Marco Silva - Fulham Andoni Iraola - Bournemouth Ange Postecoglou - Totenham Roy Hodgson - Crystal Palace Mikel Arteta - Arsenal Mark Robins - Coventry Xisco Muñoz - Sheffield Wednesday Alex Neil - Stoke City Tony Mowbray - Sunderland Thomas Frank - Brentford Jürgen Klopp - Liverpool Lee Bell - Crewe Alexandra Nigel Clough - Mansfield Town Pep Guardiola - Man City

2 pointsOnly the two hits that I can see since the last update, but they are the two biggies of George Alagiah and Tony Bennett. Alagiah was the third most popular pick this year, with 25 players selecting him. Bennett was a lot less popular, but the 10 picks was enough to secure him a place on the ZZZ team of most popular picks. 21st July: Tony Bennett 24th July: George Alagiah None of the leading three players had selected either Alagiah or Bennett, which means that we have a new top 3. @Thatcher uses their double hit to become the first person to reach the 1000 points landmark and is the new leader. @WEP and @The Unknown Man both cashed in their Alagiah Jokers to climb into second and third respectively. @Lady_Fiona, @TQRand @Young One all scores a double hit to drag themselves out of the basement and into contention. In fact the popularity of the 2 picks means that there is plenty of bunching in the chasing pack, with 19 players within 2 hits (or a Joker hit) of the lead. All to play for! @msc's cunning plan of having all of their picks die in December has come undone, as Bennett broke ranks to give them their first hit of the year. Only 4 players still to trouble the scorers now. Here is the top 7 (everyone over 800 points). Check out the full scoreboard on page 1, and let me know if I have missed any obscure hits. Thatcher (1034 points) 7 hits [George Alagiah, Gianluca Vialli, Gina Lollobrigida, Milan Kundera Rolf Harris*, Ted Kaczynski, Tony Bennett] WEP (989 points) 6 hits [Augie Nieto, George Alagiah*, Mutulu Shakur, Ralf Harris, Teresa Taylor, Tim Lobinger] The Unknown Man (893 points) 5 hits [George Alagiah*, Gianluca Vialli, Milan Kundera, Rolf Harris, Ted Kaczynski] Death Impends (891 points) 7 hits [Bert I Gordon, Billy Graham, Ed Ames, Francoise Gilot, Jimmy Weldon, Lucille Randon, Milan Kundera] Toast (857 points) 9 hits [Fay Weldon, George Alagiah, Gianluca Vialli, Just Fontaine, King Constantine, Milan Kundera, Rolf Harris, Ryiuchi Sakamoto, Winnie Ewing] Arghton (856 points) 9 hits [Carmen Sevilla, Emlain Kabua, George Alagiah, Gianluca Vialli, Ivan Silayev*, Otis Taylor, Rafiq Nishonov, Tim Lobinger, Winnie Ewing) Wannamaker (814 points) 8 hits [Frank McGarvey, George Alagiah, King Constantine, Pervez Musharraf, Milan Kundera, Rolf Harris, Ryiuchi Sakamoto, Ted Kaczynski]

2 pointsThrowing money at mentally ill people doesn't make them not hate themselves shocker. My grandpa survived WWII. For the next 60 years, he had PTSD and was an alcoholic and was dependent on valium, which didn't stop his multiple suicide attempts. But in death certain family members hold him as an example of someone who "shut up and got on with it". No, he fucking needed help and it's a miracle he made 92. That kind of talk doesn't help anyone. Her singing abilities have nothing to do with my feelings. How about we treat all people with compassion (murderers etc. excluded), instead of playing fucking oppression olympics? Morrissey has a point (shudder).

2 pointsJudging by her vampire teeth and his ghost like appearance she has been sucking his blood.

1 pointAt the risk of sounding like Marvin the android, suicide seems an eminently natural way to die.

1 pointEvery summer for the past 5 fives or so we had a prominent "young" figure who died from unnatural causes : - 2022 : Shinzo Abe, assassination, 67 - 2020 : Naya Rivera, drowning, 33 - 2019 : Cameron Boyce, seizure, 20 - 2018 : XXXtentacion, shot, 20 - 2017 : Chris Cornell, suicide, 52 - 2016 : Anton Yelchin, traffic collision, 27/ Christina Grimmie, assassination, 22 and we can almost include Robin Williams (2014, suicide), Cory Monteith (2013, overdosis)… I'd say if O'Connor death ends up being a suicide, she would be a great addition to the list. January and mid-summer seem period with particularly high young profil death every year.

1 pointIt’s always sad when we lose someone who was likeable and easily admirable. RIP Tony Bennett, you’re one of the few. SirC

1 pointSad. I don't think people realize what a good guy Tony Bennett was. I'll be listening to his music this weekend and I feel a bit more sad than expected. RIP

1 pointPosting my 2024 suggestions (I expect 10-15 to be dead by 2024) list as I'm recovering from an infection and had a bit more time than usual on my hands. This time with less images. Notes: Not included any of those names I suggested in June or last year (see page 12, includes the spoiler - for example Manmohan Singh, Josip Manolic, BM Ezrachi, Oscar Wyatt, Juhani Palmu, Than Shwe, Pasqual Maragall, Terekhova...) or those who've already been "promised" a spot on the list (Rabbi Kamenetsky, Joseph Lagu, Big Jiew, that Indian politician with a brain tumor and who else) 1. Shi Ping Chinese local politician who survived serious conditions with covid, 40 degree celsius fever and bilateral pneumonia...at 110 (December to January) and later made a decent recovery, no longer needing oxygen or a feeding tube. He's been hospitalised for around 8 years and suffers from quite advanced dementia. 2. Ivan Krasko Legendary Russian actor and "People's Artist" who survived serious conditions with covid and 45% damage of his lungs in 2020, has been hospitalised atleast ten times in the last two years, suffered two strokes after 90 (Sept 2021 and Jan 2023) and was on his deathbed with health complications twice last year. Now 92, nothing, not even death will stop him from finding another 20-year-old golddigger girlfriend. 3. Feng Zigen (1918-2024) Zhu De's bodyguard, least notable person on this list but deserves a mention due to his impressive health. Around new year he was hospitalised with covid, double pneumonia, bilateral pleural effusion, anemia, abnormal kidney and liver function, bacterial infection and hypoalbuminemia. He has had brain atrophy (dementia) and "intestine failure" for years now and looks healthy as shown in that image from this week. Also, he's 105. 4. Shigeo Nagashima Long health history includes a massive stroke in 2004, aphasia, multiple hospitalisations since, another stroke in 2022 and again ill this year. Has looked very frail for years. 5. Jayanta Mahapatra (1928-2023) Nearly died from an undisclosed very serious illness in 2006, hospitalised with covid in 2021, in ICU with intestinal problems in 2022 and on IV meds in 2023. DL Cup pick atleast three times as he always seems to get ill during the Cup. 6. Jamshid bin Abdullah of Zanzibar - Last Sultan of Zanzibar, a relic. He was reportedly near the end in 2020. 7. Gaston Flosse - French Polynesia's own version of Mahathir Mohamad, but a bit less controversial. Cardiac problems in 2009, emergency surgery in 2012, broken hip and surgery in 2013 and other hospitalisations. Again quite ill in 2023. 8. Raul Gil - Brazilian television presenter. Ill in 2012, in and out of ICU with hemothorax, lung problems, UTI and broken ribs following a fall in April-May 2020, again hospitalised in November 2020 with diverticulitis, oesophagus surgery in February 2023 and prostate surgery in May. 9. Françoise Hardy 1944-2024 - French singer-songwriter. Lymphatic cancer in 2004, in coma in 2015, laryngeal cancer for years now and apparently had a major internal hemorrhage last year. 10. Aira Samulin 1927-2023 - Finnish entrepreneur, dance teacher and media personality. Cancer survivor, severe stroke in 2018 at 91 and missing events due to illness last year. Bounces back every time. 11. John Tembo 1932-2023 - Malawian politician during Hastings Banda's times and later Malawi Congress Party head until his retirement due to old age in 2013. Rumored dead in 2018 and very ill with a "prolonged illness" in 2019. 12. Akihiro Miwa - Japanese singer, actor, director, composer and drag queen. Survived Nagasaki, has suffered ailments related to radiation exposure since - retired multiple times due to ill health already over 30 years ago, tuberculosis, diffuse panbronchiolitis, chronic bronchitis in the 1970s, given three months to live in 1984, ill with "chronic illness" multiple times in the 1990s, fall in 2009. Also had a severe stroke in 2019 and has suffered from leukemia. 13. Tep Vong - Cambodian leading monk who survived Pol Pot's times and became an unconditional supporter of dictator Hun Sen. Critically ill with fall complications (and a series of strokes) in 2020 and his health has been very bad for years now. Looks like a corpse. 14. Maung Aye - Former Myanmar/Burma dictator Than Shwe's number two, suffered from cancer and alcoholism in the 2000s, stroke around 2005, massive stroke in 2012 that required treatment in Singapore and again very ill in 2018. 15. Princess Elizabeth of Tooro (Elizabeth Bagaaya Akiiki) - Ugandan royal, model and politician during Idi Amin's times. Critically ill with cancer complications in 2019, very ill again in 2021 apparently again with cancer complications. 16. Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa - Indian activist who was on hunger strike for 8 years, tubefed and hospitalised that whole time. Again went on a hunger strike to death early this year. How much does it take to kill a 90-year-old who wants to die? 17. Farouk Kaddoumi 1931-2024 - Palestinian old guard politician, PLO political department head for decades who has been ill multiple times, most recently survived a serious illness and surgery in April. 18. Jayapataka Swami - ISKCON leader, only 74 and therefore the youngest on this list, but his health history is very impressive. Critically ill and unstable for months following a brain stem stroke and two brain bleeds (given a 1% survival) in 2008, underwent tracheotomy, UTI in 2010, leg infection in 2011, severe pneumonia + liver failure (possibly caused by Hepatitis C) in 2015, in ICU with fever in 2016, liver and kidney failure (and transplanted new liver, new kidneys) in 2018, surgery in 2019, covid and leg infection in 2021, blood clot in 2022, skin cancer in 2023. 19. Vil Mirzayanov - Russian Tatar chemist who was one of the creators of Novichok. Suffering from terminal cancer in...2018. 20. Keith Richards - Half of the world already calls him an immortal. Massive user of heroin, cocaine, mescaline, LSD, tuinal, alcohol, weed and whatever else. Has had health issues too including a subdural hematoma and brain surgery in 2006. Oh, and he'll be 80 in December. 21. Sajida Talfa - Saddam's widow, age somewhere between 85 and 88. Rumored dead in 2015, 2019, 2021 and 2022. Suffering from a long-term illness for a very long time now. 22. M Daud Kilau 1938-2023 - Malaysian crooner, very ill in 2020, survived critical conditions on ventilator due to pneumonia, pleural effusion, diabetes complications in 2022 and again very ill this year. 23. Abdel Rahman Abou Zahra - Egyptian actor. Yo-yoed in and out of hospital and ICU/critical conditions for months in 2022. 24. Abdullah the Butcher - Sudanese Canadian wrestler. Over 205kg (450lbs) at his largest, diabetes, alcohol use and chainsmoking, heart and kidney problems and of course being a show wrestler, how is he still alive at 82? 25. Enver Mamedov 1923-2023 - Azerbaijani/Soviet -Russian TV boss. Decrepit for ages and was on oxygen and bedbound at a Moscow presidential hospital in 2020. 26. Kim Yong-nam - North Korean politician who has been rumored ill multiple times and looked dead last year. 27.
