You are all very welcome to the awards ceremony of the 2023 Hare’s Dead pool. About a week later than all other pools, put a few days earlier than usual for this one! A record year for entries (since surpassed by 2024) saw 57 players with a total of 717 picks in play. It was a year high in picks, but low in hits, especially for the more popular selections. After the compilation team of popular picks managed to beat all-comers in 2022 with 15 hits and 3665 points, 2023 saw a mere 7 hits totalling 1421 points. Popular favourites Roberta Flack (28 picks) Jimmy Carter (27), Johnnie Irwin (23), Andy Taylor (22) and Frank Field (17) all made it comfortably through the year, with suggestions that at least one of them might not be nearly as ill as first thought. (Yeah Jimmy, you faker- we’re looking at you!). One vital record, however, was broken this year. In 2018 Death Impends snatched victory with the demise of Don Lusk on December 30th. A record that would surely survive the test of time. Well, it did until 31st December 2023 when US Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson was finally voted out by the Reaper. The 364 points plus 250 Betty Bonus was enough to snatch victory from the trophy-laden hands of gcreptile, and present it to our new champion, the winner of the Hares Deadpool 2023 …. DYING PROBABLY WINNER Dying Probably (2683 points) 11 hits [Betty Boothroyd, Eddie Bernice Johnson, Harry Belafonte, Hazel McCallion*, Henry Kissinger, James L. Buckley, Nigel Lawson, Rosalynn Carter, Sandra Day-O’Connor, Shane MacGowan, Tony Bennett] Despite boasting the lowest winning total since DeathImpends in 2018, and the lowest number of winning hits since Toast in 2015, the 2683 points was comfortably enough to hand victory to Dying Probably. The year started badly – their Hazel McCallion Joker was cashed in on 29th January, giving them the lead in the first leaderboard of the year on February 6th. Everyone knows that is the death knell in this pool, right? More early hits with Boothroyd, Lawson and Belafonte saw them in 2nd on May 7th, not the place you generally want to be. By the beginning of November, they were out of the top 20 and by all conventional wisdom, out of the game. Rosalind Carter’s demise on 19th November sneaked them up into the respectability of the top 20, but still seemingly out of it. However all changed in 3 days – the deaths of Henry Kissinger (November 29th), Shane McGowan (November 30th )and Sandra Day O’Connor (December 1st), suddenly rocketed DP up into second place. Too little, too late? Not a bit of it – they were just biding their time to pounce. The late, late death of Eddie Bernice Johnson was all they were waiting for to take the title in the most dramatic of fashions. Now THAT’S how you play this pool! I therefore award the Deathray memorial cup for 2023 to @Dying Probably. RUNNER-UP Gcreptile (2204 points) 12 hits [Burt Bacharach, Chris Snow, Daniel N Paul, Frederic Forrest, George Alagiah, Grant Turner, Haris Ibrahim, Henry Kissinger, Johnny Ruffo, Menahem Pressler, Roland Griffiths, William Consovoy] What can I say – the most unlucky of runners-up. However, I am sure their vast collection of silverware will give them some comfort for the loss of this one. @gcreptilealmost played this perfectly – took the lead in November with the death of Johnny Ruffo. Lost it briefly, only to regain it with Kissinger’s welcome passing. Held that lead almost to the finish line However, they just couldn’t kill off the opposition, with the lack of a December hit, and an un-scoring Joker ultimately proving fatal. THIRD PLACE The Unknown Man (2047 points) 9 hits [Bob Barker, Bobby Charlton, George Alagiah*, Gianluca Vialli, Giorgio Napolitano, Jacques Delors, Milan Kundera, Rolf Harris, Ted Kaczynski] The only other player to score over 2000 points, a feat managed by 12 players last year. Always there or thereabouts in the second half of the pool. @The Unknown Man took the lead in October with Bobby Charlton’s death. However, that was lost soon after, and despite Jacques Delors giving them a late boost, just couldn’t find that last hit to get them over the line. Ultimately, it is hard to win this pool with only 9 hits. THE “COUNT YOURSELF LUCKY” GROUP Boasting scores that would have been mocked last year, these players all managed to make the top-10 this year. Wannamaker led the pool in October, Thatcher led twice: in July and as late as November. Arghton led in February, Death Impends in July, and Buffalo Phil in May. They all had their opportunity, but just couldn’t take their chances! Diego (1955 points) 9 hits [Felix Sienra, Fusa Tatsumi*, Gianluca Vialli, Giorgio Napolitano, King Constantine, Milan Kundera, Rolf Harris, Shane MacGowan, Wei Wei] Wannamaker (1935 points) 12 hits [Bob Barker, Frank McGarvey, George Alagiah, Giorgio Napolitano, Henry Kissinger, King Constantine, Martti Ahtisaari, Milan Kundera, Pervez Musharraf, Rolf Harris, Ryiuchi Sakamoto, Ted Kaczynski] Thatcher (1897 points) 10 hits [Federico Bahamontes, George Alagiah, Gianluca Vialli, Gina Lollobrigida, Josh Ackland, Milan Kundera, Rolf Harris*, Rosalynn Carter, Ted Kaczynski, Tony Bennett] Arghton (1788 points) 11 hits [Carmen Sevilla, Daisako Ikeda, Emlain Kabua, George Alagiah, Gianluca Vialli, Ivan Silayev*, Maunu Kurkvaara (BB), Otis Taylor, Rafiq Nishonov, Tim Lobinger, Winnie Ewing) Death Impends (1783 points) 10 hits [Bert I Gordon, Billy Graham, Bob Barker, Ed Ames, Francoise Gilot, Jacques Delors, Jimmy Weldon, Lucille Randon, Mervin Shiner, Milan Kundera] LizLemon (1738 points) 7 hits [Burt Bacharach, Frederic Forrest, Henry Kissinger, Norman Lear, Rosalynn Carter, Sandra Day-Connor, Tony Bennett] Buffalo Phil (1674 points) 10 hits [Ady Barkan, Ben Ferencs, Bill Butler, Bob Barker, Gianluca Vialli, Guido Gorgatti, Hazel McCallion, Johnny Ruffo*, Lucille Randon, Tim Keller] THE “RESPECTABLE” GROUP : YoungOne (1620 points) 8 hits [Bobby Charlton, George Alagiah, Henry Kissinger, Jacques Delors, King Constantine, Nigel Lawson, Rolf Harris, Tony Bennett] WEP (1559 points) 8 hits [Augie Nieto, George Alagiah*, Jango Edwards, Mutulu Shakur, Rolf Harris, Ryan Minor, Teresa Taylor, Tim Lobinger] Yorkshire Banker (1536 points) 8 hits [Dick Clarke, Dick Groat, Francoise Gilot, George Alagiah, Giorgio Napolitano, Hsing Yun, Tras Honan, Winnie Ewing] BabyBlue (1512 points) 8 hits [Greta Anderson, Guido Gorgatti, Helene Carrere D’Encausse, Horse-Dieter Hottges, Jacques Delors, Leonard Pietraszak, Martti Ahtisaari, Phyllis Latour] Msc (1436 points) 5 hits [Bob Barker, David Berglas, Henry Kissinger, Jacques Delors, Tony Bennett] MariNisia (1431 points) 7 hits [Bob Barker, Carole Cook, Don January, Harry Belafonte, Jacques Delors, Sandra Day’O’Connor, Stanley Von Nieda] The Spinosaurus (1426 points) 7 hits [Alan Arkin, Bob Barker, King Constantine, Horst-Dieter Hottges*, John Devitt, Michael Parkinson, Tony Bennett] Wormfarmer (1422 points) 8 hits [AL Jaffee*, Ben Ferencs, Bill Butler, George Alagiah, Gianluca Vialli, Henry Kissinger, Shane MacGowan, Ted Kaczynski] ZZZ - AWARD (formerly held by Arsenal Football Club) THE SPINOSAURUS Led at the end of August after three rapid August hits. Wondered aloud whether they had peaked too early. Was correct. Did not score again after that, ultimately finishing in 17th. AWARD FOR MOST POINTS PER HIT (MIN 5 HITS): MSC takes this award, scoring only 5 hits, but scoring 1436 points to average 287.2 points per hit. Not bad, consider that the Joker did come into play. First hit in July, then 1 in August, 2 in November, and 1 in December. That’s sort-of how you play the game- just a few more needed, Honourable mentions to: LizLemon 1738 points 7 hits 248.3 points per hit Dying Probably: 2683 points 11 hits: 243.9 points per hit Pedro67: Average 320.66 but only 3 hits Famous4Eva: Average 314.33 but only 3 hits. AWARD FOR FEWEST POINTS PER HIT: TIME: 81points 1 hit: 81 points per hit. Yeah – it wasn’t even a good one! Dishonourable mentions go to: Guyfromfuture: 662 points 7 hits: 94.6 points per hit Sean: 389 points 4 hits: 97.25 points per hit. And finally, as couple of quirky notes to end with. 2023 saw one of the odder QOs in dead-pooling history with the YouTube video of Emlain Kabua’s funeral service being accepted as a QO. If you haven’t watched it, I recommend it – its hilarious. Think worst wedding video where all the guests are painfully aware that the camera is on them, but at a solemn funeral. Players should note that the fact it was filmed and released by the Marshall Islands Telecommunications Authority is what convinced me to allow it. So, if one of your really fringe picks does cark it, don’t bother turning up at the funeral service with your iphone, hoping to sneakily bag a QO. 2003 also saw the now annual event of a pick not even managing to scrape the most basic of QO’s needed to score in this pool. Fast-talker Steve Woodmore finally shut up, and it seems that everyone was so relieved that they promptly forgot all about him. Ultimately it mattered little to Gcpetile, and this host breathed a large sigh of relief! Thanks everyone for playing in 2023 and best of luck for 2024.

Honestly by the start of c. October I'd completely counted myself out and started cobbling together my 2024 team. Eddie Bernice Johnson getting terrible care at a facility saved my ass here - and what a shame it did. Thank you for running AFB! Been a joy to watch myself crumble and then bullshit my way into a win.

Not usually. Benedict is the really only one who went into the Conclave as "favourite". There's an old saying "he who goes into a conclave a "Pope" comes out a Cardinal" and that's generally been the case There was speculation about Francis last time around alright but nothing like the certainty there was around Benedict particularly given the area Francis was from. When Wotlya became JPII it was from nowhere. I don't think He hadn't been talked about much if at all. (Different era granted but all the same he was a surprise choice)

I like the Yahoo UK addition. Yields a much higher number of hits and it makes it more inclusive for ppl outside the UK eg for US sporting stars that wouldn’t otherwise obit. Makes it far more interesting.

Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor died on this day 505 years ago, aged 59. - Maximilian was the son of Emperor Frederick III, who named him after Saint Maximilian of Tebessa (Frederick claimed the saint warned him of danger in a dream he had once). - Maximilian became the ruler of different regions under Habsburg control gradually- Burgundy in 1477, Germany in 1486, and Austria after his father's death in 1493. - During the Italian Wars (lasted from 1494 to 1559), Maximilian conquered the Duchy of Milan in 1500, and failed to capture Venice in 1508. His campaigns were largely seen as a waste of resources, leading to the pejorative epithet of "Maximilian the Moneyless". - Maximilian would enact antisemitic policies in contrast to his parents, who were favorable about Jews- he expelled them from the state of Styria, and ordered all Jewish prayer books (except the Old Testament) to be confiscated. His opinion changed in 1510 following a scholar's advice that the Jewish books were of intellectual intrigue, and in 1514 hired a Jewish convert to Christianity named Paolo Riccio to translate the Talmud from Hebrew to Latin (Ricco also served as Maximilian's physician). - Maximilian was also known for his reforms of 1495, notably establishing the empire's Supreme Court, and that nobles within the empire could no longer settle claims by battle, but now via arbitration. - Maximilian severely injured his leg after falling off his horse in 1501, and reportedly became depressed from the lifelong pain it caused. Maximilian also had a grip on his mortality in the coming years, notably carrying the coffin prepared for him wherever he went throughout 1514. He suffered a stroke in December of 1518, but his cause of death has been disputed between the stroke, a kind of cancer (either stomach or intestinal), syphilis, or pneumonia. - Maximilian would be succeeded by his grandson Charles V- his only legitimate son, Philip, had predeceased him in 1506. - Maximilian's tomb was heavily damaged during World War II, but his sarcophagus was found unscathed. He was given a second interment in 1950.

I think he has looked to have aged quite a bit for about 40 years now, so I don't think there's much out of the ordinary there. (Btw, googling shows it's from last September when he was honored by the Virginia General Assembly.)
