49. Franz Beckenbauer

Wow, der Kaiser, that's a little shocking...

All in all he was a national treasure (not for me personally).

Winner of the World Cup as a player in 1974 and as a manager in 1990. Runner up in 1966 and to the Greek Philosophers in 1972. Legend. RiP.

I honestly didn't suspect he'll die this early in the year

Wonder what headline they'll use. Surely, they'll come up with a pun on "der Kaizer".

The committee  really has its finger on the pulse this year.

3 'hits' in 8 days is undeniably impressive and from their point of view an incredibly successful start to the deadpooling year.

Zagallo and Beckenbauer were the first two people to be World Champions as a player AND a coach.

The third and last one is Deschamps. I’d be him I would go for a medical check up !

RIP to a man who, even by the high standards of 20th century footballing legends that went into the administration side of the game, took a shitload of bribes.

And probably paid a lot of bribes out as well considering he was one of the main organisers of the 2006 German World Cup bid and tournament.

What a start to the death-list through. Three huts in a week and four hits in two weeks including Delors.

Funny old world. I’d never heard of him.

Given "Curtains for Johns" and "Drapes Closed", how about "Beckenbauer Shutters"?

Surprised this has happened this early in the year, he definitely felt like a decent bet to go at some point in 2024, but it didn't necessarily feel a given that he'd go this year. A very impressive start by the Deathlist, 3 in just over a week. Perhaps this year is the one where they've finally entertained all the collective wisdom on this site and decided to strike. Rest in Peace, Der Kaiser.

Considering that he was a pundit for Sky Deutschland, I'm bracing for a "Football Host is Toast"
